1/ I've had some really inspiring and helpful conversations about the value of journalism recently, including two with

and
@carlamurphy
, which I share some highlights from in today's newsletter:
Hello Twitter! Soon to launch a project so so dear to my heart, a small, illustrated guide to the news. Seeking early readers, feedback, folks who want to talk about how they do or don’t read news. please fill out this tiny form!

"In each memory I feel secure and calm, happy to be in my own world with others nearby. Parallel play isn’t just something toddlers do, it’s what I turn to when I need a gentler way to be with those I love."
6/ To get more granular on belonging:
-Information: It allows you to access information to about the place/community to which you belong.
-Identity: It allows you to be represented and feel seen/heard.
-Agency: It allows you to participate in that place/community.
3/
@carlamurphy
explained why journalism needs to serve a pluralist society in which there are multiple mainstreams, and that we need to have a finer and sharper conversation about what our core competency is for this time.
5/ one major value prop of news media I have been thinking about lately, especially at the local or community-interest level, is that it allows people to feel like they belong... through access to information, identity and agency.
2/
@d_holli
pointed out to me that there is no good lexicon of information beyond journalism, which makes it hard to conceive of things beyond it. But we need to do so.

:
1) Diversity of collaboration participants on every level is crucial
2) Respond to information needs instead of editorial outcomes
3) Increase the forces and capacity of collaboration project managers
13/ However, when that information product purports to provide civic value as its core competency and abide by a set of ethics including do no harm, we have to look at the product as a system rather than individual stories or publishers. (I think this is the key point) ⭐️
Election Day news diet—it’s a great day to consume:
1) service journalism (for voting help)
2) explainer on a political issue you want to better understand
3) voter guides from values-aligned orgs
all the speculative horse-race content won’t matter in a few months

15/ other groups are inevitably harmed (ie: by being excluded from consideration in the selection of newsworthy information or by being poorly, mis- or under-represented in news itself).
@anildash
reverse question! is there a word for when outdated infrastructure is mucking up a modern need? (non tech example: you still have to publish your name in a printed newspaper when you legally change it) i know technical debt is not the right word but something along those lines?
1/ my favorite part of putting together round-ups of great thinking is looking up the people behind the pieces: here's my last 2 months of reading on how to not burn out and how to keep up with the changing media industry from so many great minds:
14/ The value of belonging to and and successfully navigating life in your communities is beyond measure. But when news organizations optimize for that value (ie: by promoting lifestyle, service and political journalism to maximize engagement from a predominant group)...

11/ ...which is dangerous if not executed fairly and wisely.
In other words, when you add the news *business* into a community’s information ecosystem (that already involves the organic exchange of news), you will almost certainly amplify value and add harm.
📰 Why do you read the news? When should you stop? What even is "news"?
How to Read the News is a guide for consuming news in a way that helps you feel sane, healthy and capable of being a contributive human in the world.

b) For producers of traditional news: considering where the publisher you’re working with sits in the ecosystem and what its value prop is, is worth asking before contributing to the churn of a news cycle based on outdated norms around newsworthiness.

7/ In one respect, human beings have never needed journalists to access the above. At the most local level, like your family, your block, your church, or your workplace, we have access to news about comings, goings, issues and gossip that allow us to participate.
