History professor, mom,
#FreePalestine
, middle-aged rocker chick from L.A., Black Lives Matter=more than a hashtag. Fighting white supremacy for the duration.
@UjuAnya
I am a 61yo lesbian and—aside from the occasional aches and pains—I am loving life, burning the flame of social activism, and can still groove on the dance floor for at least a few hours with the right tunes.
@mozmurr
@jvplive
I visited Palestine/Israel in 1981 at 18, spending a few months as a kibbutz volunteer, visiting relatives, and traveling. What I saw, conversations I had with Palestinians and Israelis (including my bigoted cousins), and the utter hypocrisy of Israeli society hit a nerve.
@el_sabawi
I understand this so deeply, because I, a Jew, was aggressively interrogated on the same question by so-called friends when I dared to call for a ceasefire and to call out Israel's wanton devastation of Gaza and its people. You have every right to grieve as you grieve, period.
@TenuredRadical
Wow, “Tenured Radical,” this is quite the letdown. You say “it’s a joke,” but why not admit that you feel derision and display a dismissive attitude toward thousands of students and fellow faculty who are protesting an ongoing genocide. Why!?!
@_Zeets
@agleig
“Disney stories,” yes, that’s exactly how this narrative is being spun. Shocking to see sone otherwise sane and thoughtful people I know blubbering over this remote, cold monarch who played a part in an imperial legacy that is shameful. Elizabeth II was not done fairy tale.
@bfishbfish
@RVilkomerson
The Israel apologists are vigorously pushing the story that the high-rise was a Hamas shell building and that the IDF thoughtfully alerted residents before bombing it to Hell. These people never stop with the justifications and fables.
@melnickjeffrey1
He's like the worst rebound relationship after dating a charming sociopath (though, tbh, I never saw 45's "charm"). And to make matters worse, it was a desperation relationship, not even first (second, or third) choice.
@AngryBlackLady
Well said! How is she “brave” when the vast majority of the US political establishment and mainstream media/official political discourse stands behind her?
@ErinInTheMorn
This person has clearly never been to any Pride marches or queer gatherings. Joy has always co-existed with our suffering and oppression. Harnessing joy, even in struggle, is a superpower.
@psych_mic
@CoriBush
Why do you presume that they cannot do both? I am delighted to see Rep. Bush and fellow progressive demonstrate real leadership and showing why grassroots activism enables the kind of legislative momentum we so desperately need.
@kathleen_belew
I am loving these photos, but sadly, do not think that I have any from my own 1980-1984 college activist years, because we took many fewer photos, back in the day.
@caitlinrcruz
They would rather that she (and other pregnant folks in harm's way) would die than to actually follow the science and physicians' expertise.
@MikeASperrazza
@jemelehill
Are you freaking kidding me!?! The murderer clearly had written white supremacist manifestos and explicitly stated his hate for Black folks, yet you wish to deny what is staring you in the face and, instead, mischaracterize
@jemelehill
as the “racist” here.
@BreeNewsome
Yes. And since when has a single white person in this country been pulled over for air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror? This wanton murder grew out of that initial, absurd and tragic discrepancy.
@uche_blackstock
Tone deaf does not even begin to describe how badly written and insulting this language is from the head of the CDC in addressing a historic injustice and shame on the nation.
@UjuAnya
Thank you for pointing this out. My Spanish is rusty, but good enough that I could tell how the interpreter kept leaving a lot out and neutralizing the speakers righteous anger, but also her clarity.
@PamelaN84918028
@RevJacquiLewis
@johnpavlovitz
Seriously!?! We are on a burning, sinking ship and you want to lecture Rev. Lewis about not yelling fire!?! If the President cannot demonstrate effective leadership, we will be back to DJT, or worse.
@Phana24jg12144
@yipengGe
Speak for yourself, Dan. Imagine expressing such misguided hostility toward a compassionate physician trying to bring help to those in harm’s way?
@oni_blackstock
@blackgirlinmain
@jackjohnsoniv7
Where does white boy get off saying "No reason to live in the past. My god, the massacre of 19 children and their two teachers happened less than two weeks ago..." This country is in such trouble.
@ProfDBernstein
@_RichardHall
So what if they receive training in organizing? That's not a crime. Young folks have the passion, empathy, and smarts, but they can benefit from the depth of experience in organizing that experienced activists can provide. Intergeneration exchange is a beautiful thing.
@thrasherxy
As someone who was a student at NU in the early 80s (transferred out in ‘82), when our progressive student network was small but mighty in those initial Reagan years, it warms my heart to hear this news.
@rafiazakaria
It's shameful how much of an issue this has become and it detracts from just attention on the suffering in Palestine and the resolve of pro-Palestine students. It's not that questions of anti-Semitism have no place, but this is out of all proportion.
@Nonprofit_PhD
Except it never works that way. Holding one’s tongue and going along to get along becomes habit forming and toxic. The mistake here is also accepting the fetishizing of individual agency. Only forging collective strength lifts all boats.
@BlairSchirmer
@amyklobuchar
Don't be an ass. I also support Medicare for All and Bernie, but this is not at all appropriate, nor helpful to the greater good. This is the time for real solidarity, which means showing human decency, even to someone whose policy vision differs from ours.
@melnickjeffrey1
I have never felt such shame and rage. It's so deep and twisted. Even if we have spoken out from the start, even if we have always challenged the Zionist narrative, the blood is all over us. Do you know what I mean?
@timjacobwise
By this logic—and it is a common trope among the ride-or-die Bidenoids, one may under no circumstances critique Democratic Party politicians, because Trump. As if that kind of thinking has not gotten us where we are right now, time after time!
@asinRick
@stairwayto3dom
Yes and he's a rapist. I understand wanting to include all who have supported Palestine, but you have to draw the line at violent misogynists like Tate.
@irishenglish
@Buddyhead

@_KennyUong_
I’m a native Angelena who still visits family and friends in the Southland a couple times a year and would love to avoid driving that nightmare of a route. Let’s go mass transit.
@professorellen
@nhannahjones
Seriously, what (and who) is the source of the divisiveness in this country for our entire existence!?! Put the blame and accountability where it belongs: too many white women have sided with white supremacy, misogyny, and the forces of reaction for too damn long.
@antinousology
@Tytler_H
@Esqueer_
@TwitterSafety
Yes. We keep banging our heads against the wall when we expect these folks to do any fact-checking, or research of any kind. Their goal is to spread sensationalistic, gotcha rhetoric to fire up followers.
@BlkLibraryGirl
I was fortunate to read her early work on intersectionality in grad school in the early 1990s, though I don’t know if I really *got* it back then. I find that many people, my students included, throw the term around casually, without really grasping its nuances, or implications.
@ihootaloowa
Yes, you certainly have that right. As a college educator myself, I want to know how students feel and to hold myself accountable and ready to learn and grow. My suggestion would be to make your critique as specific as possible, esp if you think that this person is at all open.
@RVilkomerson
So much love and mad respect for how JVP is showing deep solidarity and amazing organizational mettle in this movement for a ceasefire and a viable future for Palestine. Thank you all.
@doc_thoughts
Yes, but we don't deserve any applause for it if we do. And yet, it is uncomfortably uncommon that many white folks notice the utter whiteness of the spaces we frequent.
@ElieNYC
@briebriejoy
@ElieNYC
, I have so much respect for you as a legal scholar, but I cannot understand why, instead of calling out the Biden Admin. for pursuing its immoral and politically ruinous policy of enabling Israeli aggression, you are attacking those standing up to genocide?
@tressiemcphd
Your brilliantly crafted analyses of Sen. Sinema's consciously-crafted fashion statements is none of the above. Interesting that these senators are more exercised about a couple of op-eds than about the rampant disregard for voting rights, to take just one example.
@AsheeshKSi
And let us remember that few of us lecturers are full time. In my department, there is only one (not me). Our per course pay is insulting and a grim struggle for many, esp. those without a partner’s income.
@soffit99
@letsgomathias
Who cares who you “support.” This is about defending all people’s rights to exist and live their lives free from violence and dehumanization. Which part of that bothers you?
@Indiawaltonbflo
Whatever the official result, thank you for running such an inspiring campaign that excited so many of us, even across the nation from Buffalo!
@beni_zarka
@RanaAyyub
@NaomiAKlein
This shit is so tired, so just stop. Israel is armed to the teeth by my country, the USA, to the tune of about four billion USD per year in military aid it is an occupying force. Stop with the denial and distortions of asymmetric power.
@HKBradshaw
@AmeetRKini
Oy, all the mansplainers, who have never taught, nor graded college essays (not to mention that they have missed the entire punchline n the story of the student’s self-incrimination. You are very patient and polite.🥰
@MartinC23765880
@Phil_Lewis_
Why? A twelve or thirteen year old girl’s authentic experience, including her budding sexuality is part of the history. Her whole life was stolen from Anne Frank and millions like her. Why sanitize it?
@BL_Balthaser
Same here, though I went in 1981. We were told growing up as young Jewish Americans that it was our "home", but I thought, "hell, no" and have not looked back.
@NifMuhammad
Thanks for posting. Many music aficionados will pooh-pooh this pop music icon, but she deserves her due. For those of us who came of age hearing her hits, it’s a melancholy day.
@mrsmabel46
@oni_blackstock
“Whiteness” is not a description of skin color, so, no, one is not “bad” by accident of birth. The more relevant question is what are we (white folks) doing to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy?
@gofackyoself
@davidhogg111
You give yourself away when you refer to history and the humanities as “shady.” But these are the disciplines that teach kids the tools of critical analysis and foster empathy. How inconvenient for some!
@BlkLibraryGirl
Why not!?! I mean, I cannot speak for all lgbtq folks, but I cannot see anyone opposing it. Kamala Harris wore this fab rainbow jacket in a pic from SF Pride a few years ago. Why not you?
@PSYKEYstr
@UjuAnya
Don't give up on hope. If you are near a city, or a more open-minded place, find out what is happening there and get involved. If you can't travel, the internet, for all its ugliness, is a lifeline and way to connect. Meanwhile, talk with someone you trust. You are not alone.
@nkjemisin
This sounds pretty homophobic to me, as the author herself intuits. Also, it's pretty rich for the sponsors to express anxiety that she has published erotic literature, given the amount of internet porn that so many US teens consume.
@jennyxstone1
@BreeNewsome
Your comment reveals that you know absolutely nothing about critical race theory, which has nothing to do with hating anyone.
@DisabilityStor1
How dare he hijack this Remembrance Day to distort the current tragedy in Palestine and the righteous responses to it. This weaponization of anti-Semitism is dangerous and morally repugnant.
@anunsafespace
@jvplive
@jvpliveNY
Far better to be a a “cosplay” Jew than one who endorses genocide in their name. Of course, there’s nothing cosplay about speaking up and taking a stand, Richard.
@RozKaveney
Co-sign this, but remembering the fundementalist mindset of a whole subset of so-called radical feminists back in the day, I am not completely shocked. Their essentialist views of gender are toxic.
@brotherjones_
Thank you for your inspiring leadership, alongside your two colleagues. You are firing up a nation of justice-seekers. Solidarity from California.
@QueenMab87
Everyone committing war crimes must be held accountable. Seems a no-brainer. And, as you noted, none of it justifies this brutal, collective punishment..
@ErinInTheMorn
Meanwhile, we have had a second bomb threat in a week, and anti-LGBTQ+ messages, following closely on the heels of a Moms for Liberty event at our public library that did not go as they had hoped. They will use terror threats, or legislation, or try both.
@thedutchsimmons
@jonnyjukeboxx
@Phil_Lewis_
Who do you think is financing and supplying Israel’s genocidal war machine? Our tax dollars! Whose unwise and brutal foreign policy decisions are not only putting Palestinian lives at risk, but threatening our democracy by enabling a corrupt, narcissistic candidate for President?
@saragoldrickrab
Indeed, and this is all the more impressive, as you suggest, because community college and many/most state Uni students (like mine) are commuters, working full time jobs while studying, and often caring for family members.
@mashagessen
@haaretzcom
Thank you for your stunning, truth-telling piece in The New Yorker. I have admired you since I first heard you speak at an Act-Up meeting in SF back in the late 80s.
