@JohnArnoldFndtn True. The recent NAEP results, while dire overall, suggest that in states like MS, TN & LA sustained focus (over years & across leaders) on sound policy & strong implementation can improve outcomes. Sustained focus, advocacy, leadership, & philanthropy matters!

It's been quite a day as we all process the NAEP results. It's worth pausing to say thank you to @NAEP_NCES leadership and staff for making sure we have this important data and for talking to so many stakeholders to help us understand what it means for students and our country.

Many key quotes in this @jillbarshay piece about rising inequality and the urgency of these results. One point that helps explain how dire this is: "Forty percent of fourth graders cannot put events from a story into sequential order, and one third of eighth graders cannot determine the meaning of a word in the context of a reading passage. "

A hot take (but no causation/misNAEPery): exciting to see that LA, surpassed 2019 (pre-pandemic) 4th-grade reading score, & AL surpassed 2019 (pre-pandemic) 4th-grade math score. Both multi-year focus on improving literacy & math instruction & curricula, tutoring, & measuring, reporting & responsibility for results. Much more to do, but maybe some hope here.
