You do not have to put on a show every day. You need to plan lessons where 20% of the time it’s about what you’re doing and 80% of the time is about what students are doing—writing, reading, collaborating, creating. The sign of a good teacher is what their *students* do.

They’ve been de-emphasizing test scores and GPAs for decades for legacy applicants and athletes—mostly white. Also, “merit” is a joke in higher ed today. Merit scholarships are for rich kids to make them feel special and to make parents feel like they got a discount.

Homework and over-assessing kill the innate drive to learn. Dr. Montessori knew this. My kids’ school (preK-8th) has a no homework policy. Kids are encouraged to read for pleasure at home. They produce lots of high quality work at school. It’s revolutionary.

This is not supported by research. If teachers used class time to let kids work instead of over-instructing, the gains would be huge. I’ve seen it with my own kids at their Montessori school. I’ve been told by high school teachers that the Montessori grads are standout students.

People should figure $3K absolute bare minimum per year for repairs and $1K for maintenance (gutters cleaned, HVAC serviced, driveway seal coated, etc.). Some years it’s zero and others it’s $15k for repairs. Just paid $2K for new washer/dryer and it’s only March.
