This is insane. Looks like Facebook did a man-in-the-middle attack using their VPN service to steal data from other apps. This enabled them to see all SSL traffic, by creating a fake digital certificate to impersonate Snapchat, YouTube, Amazon etc. Seriously?

If you needed yet another reason not to trust VPN providers or proxy services... Here Facebook partnered with a bunch of companies to have root certificates installed on people's phones so they could intercept other app's traffic.

A lot of people don't see the link between privacy and freedom, so I'll spell it out: Privacy is essential for freedom of thought, action, and speech. Without it, individuals are targeted for performing any action the govt doesn't like. We must protect privacy at all costs.

No I'm not "hiding" my information from people, I'm protecting it from them. We should all protect our information. Allowing it to be collected without restraint makes us more vulnerable than we realize.

When we post things online, we often don't realize just how much personal and sensitive information we're giving away about ourselves. This is especially true when we post photos and videos. Here are 3 rules to help keep you safe!

Today for the first time, a video on my @LBRYio got more views than the same video on my YT channel. Today I also reached 10k subs on LBRY, compared to 35k on YT. & my latest video made almost $300 on LBRY, while on YT it was demonetized. We're starting to have real alternatives.

If mass surveillance were only ever used to catch really bad guys, that'd be great! But we can't possibly guarantee that. A surveillance infrastructure that pervades the lives of everyone is a weapon in itself. Checks & balances on surveillance are essential for a free society.

Lol the crypto space is ridiculous. Why are we sending money to some of the biggest trolls like @PeterSchiff rather than supporting the tireless efforts of people like @CaitlinLong_ ? 🤨 $2000 and counting... 🤦‍♀️

Love ChatGPT but want a privacy-focused alternative? Venice is a super interesting decentralized platform that protects your privacy. If you try it, would love feedback on the kinds of results you get and how it compares.

LOTs of people recommending "safe" VPNs without having actually researched any of their own recommendations. Be careful which VPN you install, there are many that harvest data & steal credentials. 2 VPNs that I like are @mullvadnet & @ProtonVPN 🛡️ Some 🚩s to watch for: 📺:

Microsoft 365 was banned in German schools over privacy concerns. They collect a LOT of data, both when you use it online AND "offline". We dive into details, & also look at the more private office suite alternative @LibreOffice

They used to be called "private citizens" and "public servants" for a reason. Today, surveillance has inverted the power dynamic.

One of the most successful propaganda campaigns in history was convincing people that governments are omnipotent so there's no point even trying to protect your privacy.

America lost something important today, and hardly anyone heard. The headlines of state-aligned media screech and crow about the nefarious designs of your fellow citizens and the necessity of foreign wars without end, but find few words for a crime against the Constitution.

If a thief steals $100 from me, but then buys me a chocolate bar, the theft of the $100 isn’t justified just because they gave me something in return, whether I eat the chocolate bar or not. In a fair system I decide for myself whether I want to spend my money on the chocolate.
@naomibrockwell @JohnStossel Of course it's fair for the government to take its share. You're using the infrastructure that they set up.

Pervasive surveillance has 2 major effects on society: - It puts freedom at risk (10:43) - It has deep psychological impacts (18:52) We need to be very careful not to normalize constant surveillance. Instead let's make sure we're writing the best possible future.

NBTV is so grateful to the team at @LBRYcom for giving us a decentralized, censorship-resistant home for our content. We've spent years growing a community of 71k subs there. The SEC has shut down LBRY Inc. to "protect consumers". Just who exactly is being protected?

The final judgement in SEC vs LBRY is out. In accordance with the court's order and our promises, we expect to spend the next several months winding LBRY Inc. down entirely. As to what happens to LBRY from here, well, that's up to you.

"The only way to be private is to stop using the internet" Let's stop that defeatist nonsense. There are absolutely ways for people to be more private online. Let's stop disempowering them, and teach them how.

The phrase: "there is no privacy on the internet" almost seems like controlled opposition, to convince people to not even try to reclaim their privacy. Surveillance is not inevitable. Stop normalizing it.
