There is a lot of weird discourse happening in 🇨🇦 & around the world right now. You cannot be a bystander. Stand up for truth, science, tolerance, informed opinion, and civil discourse. Fight with words and arguments. A just society does not happen on its own. Educate your kids.

@PierrePoilievre
calling this "a coalition attack on our freedom and our country," is a great example of misinformation, not to mention utter BS. The way to win back respect for politicians is to stop this kind of crap.
This is a passport that has erased Canadian culture and history. Replaced by generic images that ignore our past and shared experiences as a country. But this is typical of the Trudeau government which does not value history.
Our passport is recognized around the world, and the new design unveiled today reflects our country and our shared values.
Service Canada stands ready to launch this new booklet this summer, and I look forward to seeing it delivered into the hands of Canadians.
One of the things the reaction to Gordon Lightfoot's death shows is that Canadian arts and culture matter. They bind us and give us commonality and shared identity. #🇨🇦. We need more of this.
One former PM told me the three highest callings are the clergy, teaching, and running for public office. Our Mom is happy she got two of three. Good luck, Don today in Toronto -St. Paul's! (I knew those days when you saw me watching the Parliamentary Channel would pay off!)
A lot of people across the Dominion will be waking up to some stunning news today. The new Honourable member for Toronto-St. Paul's will be Don Stewart! Incredible win! Well done, bro.

people need to remember the difference between politics and people. You may disagree w/ Gerry or anyone in politics but people serving are dedicated and make sacrifices that you don't even know about. Respect, compassion and gratitude need to a part of our dialogue.

By the way, having 35 kids in an online course is absurd. Online courses require tons of contact time between teacher and student to build relationships. Unless you want a student doing what is effectively a correspondence course, this set up will fail kids.

Noting the very American phrase to be "running for prime minister/president" rather than leader of the party. More creeping Americanization here in the great Dominion. 🇨🇦

This is a national embarrassment. The proper course of action would be to update the site, not erase it. Canadians in general, and teachers in particular who use this material, should be up in arms.

This is extremely troubling for those who value Canada's history, free speech, & prefer not to live in Orwell's universe.
One of the things I would encourage newspapers to do in their coverage of the Order of Canada recipients, is to highlight those working out of the spotlight, rather than focusing on the famous athletes or personalities.
We lost one of the most interesting and accomplished prime ministers today. I'm very saddened, indeed. My sympathies to all of the Mulroney family. I'll have more to say later.

In my view, it's hard to believe the Prime Minister of Canada does not wish the nation a happy Victoria Day. I know the issues but it's not all about one angle or one period in time.
Happy birthday to Sir John A. Macdonald. Today's his 205th birthday. Remarkable politician. For all his flaws, a man of his times, he was also a great leader who helped to build this Great Dominion.
Today is the anniversary of the death (1992) of journalistic and Canadian icon Barbara Frum. Many of us grew up with her, watching her on CBC's The Journal. So, not a surprise that the Maclean's obit of her was titled "A death in the family." RIP, Ms Frum.
Of course they never said that, as you know. They said it should not be mandatory. While we're at it, Mr. Goldstein, when was the last time you were in a classroom? Further to that, if you think students are not missing their teachers and vice versa, maybe call a kid tomorrow.
COVID-19 has exposed, once and for all, the Luddite thinking of Ontario teacher unions that all learning must be done in a classroom, where all students are physically present in a school, with a teacher in front of them. Time to join the 20th century, let alone the 21st.
How many people commenting on Egerton Ryerson, protesting him, etc., actually know anything about the man, his convictions, beliefs, morals, achievements, failures? I mean really understand him? I'm going to venture that number is exceedingly small.
This is actually a big deal. When we use our history in public places, we help to build a sense of identity. Removing it from the passport was regrettable. This move is smart. Also a surprise given the anti-history inclination of the current government.

Lots on the twitter machine in the past few weeks about the importance of studying history. Having committed my life's work to this premise, I obviously agree. Schools should be encouraging the study of humanities as much as STEM.
Pierre Trudeau's death 20 years ago today: hard to see that kind of reaction ever happening again in this country. He had plenty of dissenters but legions who liked or at least respected him. Millions literally came of age during his time in office.

This poll is another piece of evidence of the need for comprehensive history education, including the successes and failures of its leaders. We don't know much. It's all name recognition.
Who do Canadians think was their greatest prime minister? Pierre Trudeau is the nostalgic choice of Liberals. Stephen Harper is the modern choice of Conservatives. And a lot don't know. Full breakdown:
Happy Victoria Day! I've seen a number of accounts wishing Canadians well on this day, but not one of the country's federal leaders has yet posted Victoria Day wishes.

Trudeau made pointed remarks today about Erin O’Toole and his refusal to require vaccination of Conservative candidates. He also went after anti-vax protestors outside this event, saying they jeopardize others.
Brian Mulroney's state funeral was filled with music, tears, a few laughs, and reflections on his legacy as a prime minister and family man. It was clear to see the latter was the glory of his life.

Among other things that Jack Todd nails here, is that sports on TV (particularly hockey) have become nearly unwatchable due to the incessant gambling ads. They're unseemly. I hope for legislation to ban these ads. Gambling can be addictive and players as shills is pathetic.

Can someone explain to me how problems with the production of vaccines is any one government's fault? I don't get it. The contracts were signed. Great. Did people think that 2 billion doses were just going to get made right away with no hiccups at all? Do people blame govt's?
