After 29 years in NYC I finally did something I’d never gotten around to: visit the Ebbets Field home plate marker. Sadly, it’s a neglected landmark, a plaque in a parking lot sidewalk outside a maintenance entrance to an unsightly apartment complex. No other signage 1/x
Imagine spending 12 years in the majors as a journeyman reliever and the only thing people will remember you for is a couple of outbursts on social media and a dogshit apology. Cool career.
such a shame that the economics of baseball make it so that a small market team like the <squints at notes> Chicago Cubs has to trade their best pitcher just so that <squints at notes again> the billionaire Ricketts family can turn a more handsome profit.
BREAKING: Right-hander Noah Syndergaard and the Los Angeles Angels are in agreement on a one-year, $21 million deal, pending physical, sources tell ESPN.
The Angels bolster their staff with the highest-upside arm on the market — and pay a heavy price, plus a second-rounder.
If I’m commissions of baseball, I suspend both Chris Woodward and Jayce Tingler three games for their insufferably horseshit responses to Tatis’ grand slam.
Probably Cy Young's 511 wins or Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, but Curt Schilling's embrace of neo-Nazis and other fun people to ensure that he won't get elected to the Hall of Fame is right up there.
Best line from the four Hall of Fame inductee speeches:
Jim Leyland to his wife: “Katie, could you believe in your wildest dreams that I’d be going to the Hall of the Fame?”
Katie: “Jim, you’re not in my wildest dreams”

I'm continually amazed by the extent to which some Twins fans resent Joe Mauer. He gave his body in service of a Hall of Fame-worthy career, yet the $ he accepted from billionaire owners to remain w/ his hometown team is too much for some tastes, waaah waaaah. What a shitty look.
@jay_jaffe
1). He's a Twins Hall of Famer, not an MLB Hall of Famer. 2). He's been injury-prone and has wasted 2 seasons of that contract (2011 and 2014) because of injury. That's $46 million. 3). Gene Larkin put up better numbers in 1988 than Joe has in 4 of the 8 seasons of the contract.
Pedro Martinez explaining how much energy Max Scherzer expended in closing Game 5 and its effect on his stamina, and then Bob Costas basically rejecting that explanation because in his mind every ace is Bob Gibson 1968, why am I doing this to myself
what really chafes me about Ryan Braun is that unlike all of the other ballplayers who were nailed for PEDs, he tried to take down someone just doing his/her job — the sample collector, whom he additionally accused of antisemitism. Yeesh
Mets officials have discussed releasing Jose Reyes, but are conflicted given Reyes' roots in the organization. Mets want Reyes receiving a proper sendoff.
if you're defending the disturbed ex-baseball dipshit who was fantasizing about enslaving women — on the grounds that he claimed to be joking — you can fuck right off.
Fix instant replay and in-game video. Improve pace of play. Pay minor leaguers a real salary and upgrade their quality of life. Pay young MLB players better. Improve minority hiring in front offices and dugouts. Disincentivize tanking. All much more important than this junk
EXCLUSIVE: MLB is planning a radical change to their postseason perhaps by 2022, hoping to move from 5 to 7 teams in each league and -- get this -- have the teams with the best records pick their playoff opponents.
This package from

media relations department took my breath away. Was not at all expecting this but I’m honored by the acknowledgement. Minnie Miñoso’s Hall of Fame case was among those that particularly motivated me to write The Cooperstown Casebook.
Today In 1979: Willie Mays is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. “The Say Hey Kid” received 409 out of 432 votes (94.7%)

Buster Posey checked every box for the Hall of Fame - MVP, Rookie of the Year, 7x All-Star, Gold Glove, World Series, batting title, WAR lead, framing king — except sticking around long enough to satisfy every last rando.
No, it’s the *owners* you should be blaming, the billionaires who are coming off 17 straight years of record revenues (and two years of declining salaries) yet won’t pay the players what they agreed to, and aren’t assuming the health risks that come with return to play.
@jay_jaffe
ill never forgive them for this bullshit. The struggle us regular people had to go through to just put food on the table during the pandemic and these guys refuse TO PLAY A GAME because theyre not getting enough millions. Disgrace.
The FBI arrested Fetty Wap (aka William Junior Maxwell) at CitiField on federal drug charges yesterday, per law enforcement. He’ll be arraigned later this morning.

Smoltz is among the Hall of Famers returning to Cooperstown for Induction Day next week. I'm sure he'll be popular among that group of higher-risk individuals.
My dude, they're ALL made up stats.
Think about what the actual fuck an earned run is: "pretend that error [a judgment call by one person] didn't happen and reconstruct the inning."
A pitcher win: "His teammates scored enough runs for him while he pitched OK for long enough."
Anybody who thinks the Winter Meetings should ever be anywhere else besides San Diego is just flat out wrong. The tacos (and other food), beer, weather, relatively compact work and bar areas that make finding people a breeze relative to other venues... as good as it gets
John Henry has an estimated net worth of $2.7 billion. The Red Sox, whom he bought along with control of NESN in 2001 for $700 million, are worth an estimated $6.6 billion. If he wanted to pay Mookie Betts the going rate for generational stars, he damn well could have afforded it
911 systems in Texas are reportedly overloaded by calls to the waaahmbulance from Astros fans regarding the Rangers free agent spending. Objectively hilarious.
The Rangers are "encouraged" by Gov. Greg Abbott's executive orders to open the state to 100 percent capacity. Could it mean a full house on opening day?
Here it is, my Hall of Fame ballot, with the explainer linked below and at least a few thousand words on every candidate saved for the seven new one-and-dones (forthcoming in January) linked therein. As always, an honor to participate.

Daughter just saw me drop a 50-megaton f-bomb on an antivax protester who tried to give me a leaflet. Told her we’re proudly vaccinated and to leave us alone, after which she said, “I feel sorry for your daughter.”
Bombs away!
From 1954-66, Willie Mays slugged .601, posted a 166 OPS+, and *averaged* 40 HR and 9.5 bWAR. In that span, he led the NL in the latter 10 times, placed second twice, and in the worst of those years (1959) was fourth at 7.8 WAR.
His entry in The Cooperstown Casebook (2017):
Pete Alonso: “If I wanted to put someone in the hospital, I easily could. I was trying to protect my guys.”
Said he respects Arenado, but he thought the Cardinals coach, Stubby Clapp, jumping on him from behind was “cheap.” Alonso would’ve preferred if Clapp came right at him.
Astros pitcher Francis Martes has received a 162-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance. Martes, who was suspended for a PED violation last March, will begin his suspension at the start of the 2020 regular season.
no, we wouldn't. This is absurd. We won't forget Mike Trout, Max Scherzer, Fernando Tatis Jr and the literally hundreds of other talented players that we pay to see and that we care about
Dave Roberts said Trevor Bauer is with the team in DC. They plan on letting him start Sunday, and Roberts said their direction was to not do anything until they get guidance from MLB.

Football? They still play that sport with the concussions and the non-guaranteed contracts and the threatened suspensions for protesting? Fuck that, I'd rather watch the Mets play the Orioles 365 days a year while reclining in a beanbag full of rats.

Get - and I cannot possibly emphasize this enough at a time when recognizing this ongoing shitshow is far more important than the sports we’re missing due to this administration’s ineptitude in confronting a public health crisis - fucked if you think I’m sticking to sports.
