What's it like to be a Black professor: Since moving to Ithaca, police have stopped me SIX times. I received two tickets for driving w/o a license (I have a valid license). One for driving an ATV on the highway (I have no ATV and probably wouldn't drive one on highway 81).

We rarely publicly discuss how differently Black & marginalized people experience these "idyllic" college towns (and many cities). They often have racist police; schools trying to push Black kids into special ed or discipline; and few spaces to feel fully at home.

The last encounter was frightening. It involved backup, a racist officer, bold lies, and claims I was in a ATV (I was in a minivan). I had to FaceTime my mother. I let the officer know and verbally said I was afraid because I otherwise I might be the next Sandra Bland.

I imagine some academics think I'm unqualified to "objectively" examine the police because I'm too subjective or too close to the object. But I wonder whether they have they considered the subjectivity of their positions, getting to only think about police in moments of crisis.

Yet it seems impolite to mention these things. I hope faculties and Appointments Chairs consider this. I've been able to respond to the inconvenience of easily dismissed tickets & multiple court appearances because of my flexibility as a professor. But what about everyone else?

@MeganTStevenson It was strange and not even the weirdest part of the interaction. He seemed upset that I didn’t want to argue with him, but what’s the point of arguing with an officer willing to openly lie? I just stayed calm until I became too afraid to hide my fear. Lasted about an hour.

Like many abolitionists, I arrived at this position after a lifelong journey, which forced me to be realistic & appreciate the brutal reality of policing. This approach embraces a honest understanding of the oppressiveness of policing, not a naïve understanding of human nature.

I can’t understand how anyone can think that abolition is the naïve position. Is it not naïve to think you can reform institution that is inherently oppressive and violent? When does police reform become futile for reformers?

I’m traveling to DC for the law faculty recruitment conference on my birthday. That’s a valid excuse for buying a unicorn 🦄 donut, right?

So... are we’re ready to talk about white supremacy in the legal academy: from admissions, hiring, pedagogy, and leadership? Because if the legal doctrines are problematic, we probably play some role in shaping them... (asking for a friend)

As a former young Black kid who grew up in the Bronx (& Yonkers), many of peers had the natural gifts to outperform my colleagues in the law, including those in the academy. We might not have attended fancy schools, but we knew WTF a computer was, even in the 90s. #implicitbias

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says she “misspoke” when she said “we have young Black kids growing up in the Bronx who don’t know even know what the word ‘computer’ is”

Police might claim that there are no “quotas” for tickets, but police practices appear to tell a different story. Interestingly enough, I didn’t experience this in Indiana. I thought my minivan was some sort of motherly racial shield. How naive.

When hasn't there not been a punitive strain of feminism? Since Michelle Dauber's remarks, I've been thinking about whether carcerality is an aberrational, or a core, feature of feminism. Feminist politics has long relied upon state violence/punishment to vindicate rights.

Judge Keith is like a father to his law clerks, and I’m so sad to have lost him but proud to be part of the Keith Clerk family. He lived by his principles, even when it was inconvenient, & is a role model for living purpose-driven life.

I have officially been in the legal academy for 4 years and 4 months. With these many years of wisdom, I've decided that I'll share a few of my controversial thoughts about the legal academy & profession, over the new few weeks...

I'm grateful the Crime Report published a piece about"Girls, Assaulted," in which I argue that the invasive search of incarcerated girls is state-inflicted sexual assault. I want to talk a little about some of the feedback I received from law professors:

Conservatives aren't the only reason we are at this moment: Feminists partnered w/ social conservatives to crusade against sex work, arguing for limits on sexual autonomy and emphasizing the value of procreative marital sex. Some of their arguments are in the draft opinion. 1/2

For what it's worth, the Philly ward where I was a majority inspector had close to 90% participation from registered voters. Over 50% of those votes were early/absentee ballots, which are still being counted.

And the pushback is a reminder of how power is reproduced. These (men) carefully monitor the borders of whom can be included in citations because exclusion is how they justify their own power. Their mediocrity is exposed once you remove their ability to ignore other scholars.

This phenomenon does not mean there is additional "complexity" or nuance required to understand why #TyreNichols was killed. Diverse officers are still officers; they will protect the existing social/racial hierarchies. In the U.S., that's white supremacy and racial capitalism.

Check out my two unicorns 🦄🦄sneaking some snacks. We successfully sold & moved out of our house on Sunday, & are now staying in a studio for the next couple of weeks. My timing for this move was either brilliant or tragic. Either way, I need all the positive vibes.
