It’s been a while since I updated my game improvement journey, and since I now have access to all my data I figured it was due for a refresh.
No idea what 2024 will bring. On the one hand I’m a dad now and don’t have several free hours a day to work on my game. On the other

I am so confused by the decision to hold a press conference and release a video that does not remotely corroborate the officer’s version of events.
What were they hoping would happen here? Genuinely perplexed by the whole sequence of events.
Good for him for not picking up after the 12, then managing to put together a solid string of holes. That takes grit. Tells me a lot more about him as a golfer than the 86.
I’m not a great golfer, but I have gone from a 10 to a 1.6 over the last year & have learned enough about what it takes to improve that I’d love to help a couple golfers (for free) who may not be able to afford coaching, but are willing to put in the work.
No swing coaching 🧵
The second best golfer I know, a legit +6 with a game I would absolutely kill for, put up an 84 yesterday in a local US Open qualifier.
Golf is hard. Tournament golf is harder.
I’m surprised more golf ball manufacturers haven’t adopted subscription models.
Customize with number choice + any stamping/alignment aids, select a cadence for renewal, and get a customer for life.
Think Amazon’s “Subscribe & Save” plus scalable personalization.

My wife and I bought 6 containers of KFC gravy last night and a Tupperware container. We’re going in to Thanksgiving saying it’s her secret recipe and seeing what kind of reaction it gets.
A couple thoughts about the outing of CC Snob…
1. Please don’t doxx the actual guy. It’s enough we now know he’s everything he mocked. No need to go further than that.
2. It wasn’t parody. Parody accounts include themselves in the joke. They take some swings, but they save the
@LouStagner
Accepting I’m probably not getting it up and down is the first thing. Focus will be to at least give myself a putt. So I’m taking out any cute targets that might lead to a two-chip situation.
Then, with that much grass and the ball sitting down, I need decent speed otherwise
@NUCLRGOLF
This isn’t a tough one. It’s a Par 4 temporarily set up as a Par 3, and he made it in 1 shot. It’s going down as a 1 on the score card and he’s buying drinks.
BUDGET GOLF IMPROVEMENT KIT
My least favorite thing about golf is how costly the barrier of entry is, & the way that can exclude people from improving at the game.
With that in mind, if I had a $600 budget & had to build an improvement kit from scratch, here’s what I’d do.
You have $600 to build somebody a winter golf improvement kit from scratch. What are you getting & why?
Assume they have basic equipment, an index of 5-20, & are already getting some lessons.
(I’ve started a thread w/ my own recommendations, but curious what y’all got)

I am thrilled to announce that starting January 1st, I will be joining

“There must be other video??”

Would love to see this kid get the resources he needs to really develop his game. Seems like he could be a pretty decent player if given the right opportunities.
I recently played with a guy in a tournament. Good player, probably scratch, and I’m guessing was +2 on the day through 14 in decently tough conditions.
15th hole is a blind tee shot and he pushes an iron OB right. No hope. Re-tees and loses it right again, but not as bad.

I was recently in an argument with a dude on X (formerly known as Twitter) about how a +2 handicap fired off a 15 on a single hole and posted a 90

Embarrassing golf moments? I’ll start…
Played 18 in 103° heat but it was okay because I stayed hydrated and sprayed myself with heavy duty sunscreen throughout the round.
Saw myself in the car mirror after the round and noticed I was super chalky. Checked my sunscreen…
I don't get why people seem to have a hard time understanding this, so going to try to break it down as simply as possible.
The differential is the difference between your score and the course rating.
Your index/hcp is based on your 8 lowest differentials in previous 20 rounds.
This player has a 0.0 index.

Well, I have some updates and thankfully these are happier than my last, though I can safely say this has been the most intense and dramatic week of my life.

I’ve mentioned that I like using The Grint for previewing my rounds, even though I don’t actually use the app in play.
The reason for this is simple – by moving the tee-box around, you can measure distances between trouble in a way I haven’t found outside Google Earth.

I was talking to somebody on the course yesterday and he brought up the whole “Tiger doesn’t take divots” thing.
I’m now a little worried it’s going to spread & fill people with the wrong concepts of approach shot impacts.
So, here’s the start of a 🧵 of Tiger taking divots.

My thoughts? That you don’t know the difference between Muslim and Shikh, and would be wise to educate yourself instead of posting race baiting nonsense.
Just the first thoughts off the top of my head, but I have many more.
I’m going to explain what will seem like an overly complicated way I’ve been lining up putts that has been working for me, but I promise there’s a method to the madness.
Also to be clear, not recommending others do this. Just suggesting you find what works for you 🧵

I’m a little confused on the purpose of the OWGR. Is it to quantitatively rank the best golfers in the world, or is it to determine who gets into majors?
If the goal is to act as an unbiased ranking system, it seems like a massive self-own to exclude an entire class of golfers

My cousin wants to get into golf and is asking about equipment. After looking around, the best deal I’m seeing may be this Callaway set at Costco for $549.
I told him he could piece together a really solid used set for $1k but for a beginner, Costco is looking good.
Advice?

I’m sorry, but no. Every time a video came out over the last two years seeming to show him in decline, we were told it was cropped or cherry-picked or out of context in some way.

Tbh, I’d probably assume this is someone with physical or mental disabilities and if that’s the case, I’d feel gratitude for the opportunity to play with someone who has learned to overcome a helluva lot more than I have.
How I imagine I’ll explain golf strategy to my son when he’s old enough.
1. With your drive, your goal is to hit the ball as far as possible without it going to bad spots like water, trees, white stakes or bunkers. To hit it far you have to be really strong and powerful so you

One of my least favorite things we do as a society is lionize somebody then immediately rip them to shreds as soon as they say or do anything controversial.
I’m not participating. Michael Block gave us an incredible week, & a couple brow raising sound bites won’t diminish that.
@wolfstrength
I don’t know man, these are very demanding movements that challenge strength, mobility, and stability. The major lifts you’ve given are all saggital plane movements. Super important, but so is what these guys are doing. Especially as quarterbacks.
Wow, I had never seen this video of Tiger. Just imagine having the mental strength to experience that prejudice at 14 & instead letting it drive you away from the game, you use it to fuel the drive to become the best golfer who ever lived & change the game forever. Powerful stuff
2023 off to an auspicious start. 16 GIR. Two hooked drives, but great other than that. Irons were dialed, and rolled it really nice from inside 10.
We played from 6,300 so a lot more forward than the tees I’d normally play, but not a bad way to kick off the New Year.
How do we think most golfers are going to play
#6
?
I heard NLU say they think most will lay up.
I’ll be shocked if a FW or hybrid to the front right isn’t the play.
The approach after the layup just looks so tough w/ a partial wedge to that narrow a green.
I don’t have many GCA opinions, but the one hill I’m willing to die on is that a course should never end on a Par 3.
Ideal finishing hole is a high risk/reward Par 5.

I built rankings for these types of lists when I was at TuneIn, so off the top of my head…
How do you determine “Top”?

Random data that kinda blew my mind today… the difference in loft between a “Players” iron and a “Game-Improvement” iron is as high as 8-9 degrees in some cases 🤯.
E.g. 7-irons

T400 = 26°

It’s 2.
3 is half a cup, and 1 is a cup and a half.
Otherwise “half a cup” would also mean “left edge” and I don’t think anyone’s ever been confused by that.
I signed up for our club championship before our boy was born, not realizing it *might* be a 2 weekend event.

I’m either going to have to loosen some bungees or create a protector for the GC3 since the ball bounces back pretty hard from 10’. But this enclosure + screen was definitely the right choice.
I have two major problems with the bifurcation proposal…
The first is selfish. One of my favorite parts of the game is the fact I can directly compare my performance to the pros. A personally unflattering comparison to be sure, made even more so by the difficulty of the…
Yesterday’s speed training session. I had two goals.

2. Hit 164 ball speed (I know, it’s not a lot). 1 mph at a time though.

Welp, started off the club championship today with an OB triple and proceeded to make 3 more bogeys on the front 9 for a 42.
Proud of how I handled it though. Didn’t get upset. Used it as a learning experience and shot par on the back for a 78.
Looking forward to tomorrow.

Give me a day or two to think through how best to structure it so that I can work with as many people as possible.
I have such empathy for the majority of golfers out there.
Example… I’m at the airport waiting for my plane to board and guy next to me, late 50s, is watching swing instruction videos on YouTube.
I have a golf book out and naturally, we strike up a conversation.

I’d really love the inside story of the Masters app. Who built it? What the product design phase looked like? How long it took? What the backend is running off of?

This may surprise people, but even though I’m against the rollback, I’m not opposed to a change that reduces the importance of distance in the game.
Personally, I like that golf is one of the few sports where you don’t have to be genetically blessed to compete at the top level.
