Here's a comparison of the Canadian and US growth paths for real household disposable income per capita since the end of 2019. Both saw a temporary spike in 2020 Q2 as the two governments took fiscal policy action when the pandemic hit. There was a second spike in 2021 Q1 that was much larger in the US due to the Biden "American Rescue Plan". Canada's real income per capita trended down after 2021 Q1 and stabilized in mid 2022 at a level about 3.1% higher than 2019 Q4. The sudden inflow of non-permanent residents, with average incomes well below those of permanent residents, had the effect of holding overall average real income per capita down. In the US, after tumbling in 2021 and the first half of 2022, in part due to the surge of inflation which was a bit stronger and longer lasting than in Canada, the economy strengthened as supply constraints waned and real income per capita rose again in 2023. It was 6.1% higher than before the pandemic as of 2024 Q2. #cdnecon
