Mentee. Translator of Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum (Oct ‘23)
My bf just broke up with me and I find myself wanting to seek solace in a warm, comforting read. And I just realised today is also the US pub day for my debut translation. Can’t make this up. 🫠🥲 Happy pub day to me and Bo-reum, and I wish everyone happiness.
Someone just asked me why I’m learning Thai and is there a “use” for it. Yes, I’m going to get happiness and contentment from doing it so that’s a whole lot of use!
Just a translator holding her second book! 🇸🇬📖 Dive into Singaporean neighbourhood stories of 1970-80s - a bottle of cod liver oil, a coffin in a living room, monitor lizards in a storm drain and more - in DAKOTA* by Wong Koi Tet.
*Dakota Crescent in Singapore 🙂
Translating be like writing one line and staring into space for the next 10 mins. And going back two paras before to edit a phrase. And googling for something related and getting sucked into it for another 5 mins. And then coming to tweet about it. 🫠
It’s just me (the translator) right now, but I hope one day I’ll be meeting the author, Hwang Bo-reum. Here’s to more love for books and bookshops
@BloomsburyBooks
When I first started out as a Korean-English translator, I was asked—way too often—why not translate from Chinese instead? Just because I’m a Singaporean Chinese. Well, now I translate from Korean, Chinese and Japanese, and sometimes into Chinese. 😆
My translation of Hwang Bo-reum’s Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is flying off the shelves 😍😍 It’s currently oos at Singapore’s Kinokuniya bookshop. Look at the gorgeous display (now empty) and love how they also stock the books mentioned inside the novel!
I won something at the Korean essay writing competition (for non-Koreans) organised by the ROK Emb and I think it’s the best prize for a literary translator ✨✨.

What does your ideal bookshop look like? This delightful novel about bookshops and life will surely fuel your love for books. It got me thinking about how books find its readers and I hope it’ll find a spot on your shelves. Publishes tmr

It’s really quite the experience to be translating a warm and healing Korean novel while navigating a brutal breakup. And the solace I get from re-reading my translations of another k-healing novel that’s coming out next month. I hope my translations will heal more souls ❤️✨
Language learning is my anchor. It gives me the energy and motivation to do other language-related things like translating, teaching, writing and reading. Need to fill up the energy tank ⚡️
Being fluent in multiple languages also mean that I can shop online in several languages and that’s … BAD. I just ordered several things (guess what) from a Japanese site.
This wouldn’t have happened without the most amazing

Translating a Korean novel now and I came across this line that I really needed to hear, and it’s giving me so much comfort. 🥲🥺 I can’t wait to share more about the book (my 3rd!), but for now, I’ll work harder to polish the lines ✨❤️
I’m so glad to be part of the process of a book reaching a wider audience ❤️ Can’t wait to hear what people will think of Hwang Bo-reum’s Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop, opening on 26 Oct ✨

The (foreign) language chooses you, not the other way round. It takes affinity and fate for it to click, and sometimes it’s just about the right time and going with the flow. Thai is such a language for me. ❤️
Don’t let people tell you that the language you wanna learn is more difficult or less practical than others or to discourage you in any other way. Follow your heart ❤️
When my Korean was at the beginner/intermediate level, I received so many 한국어 잘하시네요 compliments, but I stopped getting them after reaching advanced level 😂
My friend gifted me a trilingual edition a couple of years back, but I can only read two 🙃. There’s too much on my mind, going to relax a little before going to bed early

Hyunam-dong love! Yeongju leaves Seoul to open a bookshop and attempts to rebuild her life. But this is also about how bookshops build communities, jobs not defining your worth, the fine line between success & happiness, and how books can help. A great translation

Why is the native speaker automatically assumed to be the better language tutor? 🙃 I tutor Korean and as someone who had walked the path, I think from the learner’s perspective when I teach.

한글날입니다. ❤️ I wasn’t a language person. I didn’t have anything that I was intensely passionate about. I didn’t have any friends overseas. Learning Korean changed all that.
I'm excited to be reading from my translation of Singaporean author Wong Koi Tet (黄凯德)’s DAKOTA at the

Like Yeongju in the novel, I love visiting indie bookshops. I’m heading to UK next week — please recommend bookshops, museums and food in Norwich, London and surrounding areas! ❤️✨
Happy 한글날! 13 years and counting with the Korean language. 🥳Like all long-term relationships, the journey is not without its heartaches and slumps, but I just want to say I love the language so very much, and all the wonderful people, things and opportunities it brought me ❤️
