Yesterday I shared, with my 12 yo daughter’s permission, our text exchange during a lockdown at her school, and my account was suspended. I’m sharing those words again today, along with mine.
THIS IS NOT NORMAL. THIS IS NOT OK. 1/
None of this is normal. It’s not ok. Our legislature had the opportunity to do something meaningful last month, and they failed miserably. We’re all watching, and we’re coming for your seats. I look forward to supporting any GOP candidate who wants to primary any of them.
“We are on a lock down. It might be a drill idk. We heard sirens. I'm scared. I love you so much.”
“Somebody knocked on our door. I am trying not to cry and holding friends hands. We knew what to do. We went into a corner.”
45 minutes of terror for them and for us. 2/
My words to my scared daughter:
Sophie I love you. Let me know what’s happening please
Keep texting me
Are you in a safe place
Whose classroom are you in
I know you’re scared. Try to keep breathing and you will be ok.
Whose hands are you holding
What friends are with you
Ok I’m glad you have good friends there.
Have you heard anything else
I’m not sure. I have not heard anything from school.
Are you under a desk?
Any more noises?
You’re doing a good job. I want you to look for a place to go if you need to shield yourself from anything.
@jordcollins
@NC5
We cannot. My daughter is still waiting to be cleared to leave her classroom. There are first responder cars as far as the eye can see outside the school. There is no returning to “normal” after this!
We adopted beagle
#1
in march 2020 after having two very large and easygoing rescues for 13 and 14 years. Beagle
#2
was adopted in May 2021. How dramatically different could their personalities be, we thought. 😂

@beaglefacts
I rarely disagree with
@mikiebarb
on
#TheDaily
, but today he called
@JohnBelforLA
“bless his heart” a gentle teasing of POTUS, and this southern transplant knows that is actually a deep burn.
💯this is a “men violently attacking women” issue and not a “what more should women be doing to not get violently attacked by men” issue. I do everything I can to run safe and smart, but I should absolutely not fear for my life on an early morning run.

Welp, Polly found her howl today. It’s taken 6 months, but there it is! Protecting the Powell house from dangerous recreational runners all morning.

When I was 2, my dad suffered a spinal cord injury. When I was 6, my mom was diagnosed with kidney disease. At 16, dad got cancer. At 19, he got lung cancer and died. Access to care kept my parents alive. Healthcare kept my family together.
#whatgotmeintohc
My kids have suspiciously not spoken to me much this morning and I’ve just learned that
@JasonLPowell
instructed them not to ask me a million questions today for Mother’s Day. 🤣 The boy was the first to give in.

There is no way to spin the data and arrive at reopening and advancing the way we are being in the best interest of public health without mandating masks in public spaces. Just a stunning denial of responsibility and science.
Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor John Cooper are marching forward with plans to reopen businesses and lift coronavirus restrictions, despite a worsening outbreak infecting, hospitalizing and killing more Tennesseans than ever before.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you show up to volunteer or donate supplies today and whatever you’re bringing is no longer needed, have some grace and understanding. Needs are changing by the hour and it’s very difficult to broadcast bride changes to the masses.
As fate would have it,
@JasonLPowell
and I had a baby (and a 9 lb one at that, ahem) on the first day of
#tnleg
session in 2014. Today is that baby’s 6th birthday, again on the first day of session. Then and now, we love you to the moon, Hawkes!
This very good boy is going through some expected and unexpected medical stuff today. Positive thoughts for him extra appreciated. Sparky is 14, a product of
@nashvillehumane
and the women’s prison, and the best family dog there has ever been. cc

If you see
@JasonLPowell
today, please help him remember that a signed Blue Book ≠ a valid Valentine’s Day gift. Happy Valentine’s Day to my lobster!
Thank you
@MetroSchools
@MNPSFamilies
for the four (4) lunch balance callouts over winter break, when there is no way to settle the balance. I’m sure that’s not unsettling at all for families who might have some anxiety about paying their balances.
You can't fabricate empathy. The way
@JoeBiden
whips his head around the second he hears someone crying...some days I don't have the emotional bandwidth to remember how much I miss compassionate leadership, the comfort of knowing even if we don't agree on policy, decency prevails
This birthday has been the best yet. A chilly, kinda speedy run (for me), festive socks, and kind friends who delivered me a box of gifts & zoomed with me during their busy holiday. My family is home, we all tested Covid negative yesterday, & presents are wrapped.
#thankful
One of the most meaningful relationships I've developed as a
@MetroSchools
parent is with the H.E.R.O. program that provides resources for families experiencing homelessness or transitional living situations. Even in the summer, you can connect with families to help. 1/2
Recommended listening. A husband and wife, both OB/Gyns, are essentially the last abortion providers standing in Missouri and just across the river in IL.
Happy Easter from the Powell household where we’ve had homemade cinnamon rolls, attended church for the 1st time in 2 yrs, explained the resurrection of Christ & the specifics of payday loans, had an egg hunt, & a redistribution of wealth re: egg hunt treasures. Time for a nap.
I don't know who needs to hear this right this very minute, but take a deep breath and remember this virtual school experience may not get easier, but it will at least become more routine. I'm taking 10,000 deep breaths because today has been bumpy. BUMPY.
@memangrum
@Tennessean
You left an indelible mark on our family when we met in Aug 2020, & I’m forever thankful for the way you approached this story & our experience with such professionalism & care. In the years since, my respect for you & your work have only grown. All the best to you & the beags!
Congratulations to Heather Corum Powell as a

Over the last 15 years, I had the honor of getting to know Alice as a professional, as a mom of same-age daughters in childcare together, a friend, and fellow Rotarian after she sponsored my membership. Her loss is shocking and devastating. I can't wrap my head around it.
It is with great sadness that we share the devastating news that Alice Pearson Chapman, our managing partner, passed away unexpectedly this morning of a brain aneurysm. [1/2]
Happy birthday to my person,
@JasonLPowell
! You are the world’s best family man, dog whisperer, saver of turtles, protector of the people you love, public servant, Disney fan, husband, dad, and friend. We are so, so glad you were born!
My dad died 22 years ago today when I was a crabby teen. I miss him as much now as I did then. I also have very few photos of him, and even fewer of us together. Parents, get in the picture more often. Your kids will thank you one day. Also, that’s a cigarette in a hospital.
#80s
The last 12 days have been a lot. If you have anxiety (like I do), managing it has been nearly impossible. My staff and I had an honesty session today and it helped so much to know we’re all feeling what we’re feeling. We can do this.
@CamFerriss
Right. Nothing I love more than being condescended to by people who have zero data to back up their broad statements. Please, woo me with your unintended consequences. Tell me all about how people suffered unfairly when we had an assault weapons ban. You can’t.
We said goodbye to our constant companion, protector of the family, lover of popcorn, bandit pooper, expert crumb-eater, and loyal friend last night. Thank you for giving us your unconditional love for nearly 15 years, Sparky. 💔
Thank you
@elrodforschools
for speaking logically & rationally about why the 2 week heads-up to move to mask-optional in
@MetroSchools
is the right call, specifically re: unique needs of many families in our district in particular. And a heads-up, RAE is running again.
#teamelrod
So now we're exploring the nuance of "grouping or gathering" in the name of justifying large gatherings in bars & restaurants & events so there is no "cross-cluster contamination" but my kids can't go to school in person because we love bars more than children.
@JohnCooper4Nash
On Thanksgiving Eve (it’s a thing), I’m giving thanks for the dedicated State of TN employees operating the CARES Act Supplier Maintenance system, making sure nonprofits like mine get reimbursed for the important work we’re doing to make this year a little better for TNseans.
Men, listen up: my husband did the most romantic thing ever tonight. I got home late from a super long day at my very stressful job & he immediately told me to hide. Hide from my children so I could drink a glass of wine & skip bedtime.
Went to the best donut shop in town today for their last day of business. They went out strong with fritters and old fashioneds as good as ever! They hope to reopen in a new location soon. Wonderful people!
Listening to

@MarissaRMoss
My kids’ school shared this yesterday and I keep re-reading this: “It’s not hard because you are doing it wrong. It’s hard because it’s too much. Do the best you can.”
My 9 yr old daughter just heard a clip of POTUS speaking at a campaign event. He mentioned
@KamalaHarris
by name & my darling daughter turned to me and said "Oh my gosh, did he just mispronounce her name on purpose?! That is so rude!" 1) that's my girl, and 2), we deserve better!
The number of people who think more than 4 weeks of vacation for a large organization’s top leader is unreasonably high is astonishing. It is not. And I think the labor market being what it is, if you’re not being appropriately compensated and provided time off, seize the moment.
4 long years waiting to cast this vote. Casted it like my life depended on it. And proud as always to vote for
@JasonLPowell
in his first unopposed election ever. I think the gods knew we needed to focus every effort somewhere else this year!

Glad to see
@WomenInNumbers
rescinded their endorsement of Carol Swain and pledged to review and revise their endorsement process. I'm personally encouraged by the number of people who are so engaged and involved that they took the time to speak up and affect change. Onward.
This child has grown up on the house floor w/her dad, first as a preschooler holding a lollipop to keep her busy & now as a 5th grader who listens to every word & asks all the important questions abt why they’re doing & saying the things they do. Watch out, world.
@JasonLPowell
I stand by my takeaway from an early career mistake: being a fierce advocate for myself is critical to advancing my career. Also, having a career in the nonprofit industry does coexist with having goals and ambition.

Happy New Year! Starting off the year with one of my favorite traditions, a New Year’s Day run with my favorite running partner. Here’s to a new year and a new decade full of health, happiness, success, and as much travel and fun as we can pack into 10 years.

Good morning from

last week, but gyms and bars remain open. I'll be over here screaming into the void about our misplaced priorities. cc:

This is infuriating. I run a healthcare nonprofit, on an exponentially smaller scale than this, and to see leaders being so nonchalant & careless makes all of us look bad. This is an example of poor leadership, terrible stewardship, and disregard for the importance of protocol.
Whatever else may have happened today, I very unexpectedly met a man walking a pony while I was running Percy Warner Park. And my beagle is just so very tired. God bless the animals who make life better.
A personal pet peeve. If you’re a authority figure making an announcement, please don’t tell me you “haven’t made this decision lightly,” because that should go without saying. And it makes me wonder if every other decision you make, when you don’t qualify it, was made lightly.
We started as a small group of Glendale families interested in making our voices heard about gun violence, & a few days later we’re strong in number & our dedication to seeing real change. Look our children in the eyes & tell them you won’t listen to their pleas. Be their heroes.
These no

cookies came home with the kids today.
8 yr old: what’s a voucher?
Me: explains broadly what it is.
8 yr old: that doesn’t make any sense! That’s taking away money from the schools and kids who need it!
Bingo, kid.

🚨Dad joke alert: my dad had part of his prostate removed today, and even the anesthesia couldn't stop him from telling the doctor he gave up part of his prostate for Lent.😆

In response to absolutely no specific jackass whatsoever, I’m compelled to state what an absolutely necessary job benefit it was (for all of us) for my husband to take paternity leave when each of our kids was born. No explanation needed. All parents should have this available.

raised more than $238,000 through our virtual One Night Only gala. Direct economic support for dialysis & transplant patients in Middle TN. I'm honored to serve as CEO, and so proud of our team. Here's more:
Today, I delivered some furniture to a recently housed MNPS mama. Other times, it's clothing or gift cards that might be needed. Highly recommend finding out how you can help because there is ALWAYS a way.
@chez1954
I’m only speaking of supporting gun reform candidates who want to primary our GOP incumbents in districts that are currently not winnable by dems.
My 2nd grader is auditioning for a talent show at school tonight - a solo singing performance - and I would love to send her good vibes. Her 2019 resolutions included “singing in front of people and not being nervous” and I am so proud of her for stepping out of her comfort zone!
