When I was 2, my dad suffered a spinal cord injury. When I was 6, my mom was diagnosed with kidney disease. At 16, dad got cancer. At 19, he got lung cancer and died. Access to care kept my parents alive. Healthcare kept my family together.

Over the last 15 years, I had the honor of getting to know Alice as a professional, as a mom of same-age daughters in childcare together, a friend, and fellow Rotarian after she sponsored my membership. Her loss is shocking and devastating. I can't wrap my head around it.

My dad died 22 years ago today when I was a crabby teen. I miss him as much now as I did then. I also have very few photos of him, and even fewer of us together. Parents, get in the picture more often. Your kids will thank you one day. Also, that’s a cigarette in a hospital.
