Excited to announce my next book, coming from
@hachettebooks
: WHAT SHE NEEDS IS A GOOD DEFENSE. All I wanna do is continue my mission to share more stories about women musicians, by women. And also have some fun until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard.
"keep politics out of country music" artists & their various wives suddenly finding their voice is also about them realizing their declining relevance & needing to find an audience w/MAGA turds because there's $$ there, building those beach houses on hate when talent is lacking.
Tyler Childers' new video & song are exquisite & important & I know it's a lil crass to share old work but this is who he's always been: fighting for rural folks and against stereotypes, mining for truth, hollering to the sky against injustice. From 2018:
Saturday night someone drove a car into the front door of my kids' school because they were being chased & shot at so we had to drop them off in a side door today & now they're probs on lockdown due to a school shooting in Green Hills but yeah drag queens are the safety risk
Well, since we're talking about women owning country music today I might as well unveil a little Grammy nomination-day treat. HER COUNTRY. May 10, 2022. Dream📷by dream photographer
@CatherinePowell
. Pre-order here:
It’s just the biggest tell of course, the hundreds of “this isn’t country” comments on the Instagram posts about this - one of the sonically “countriest” sounding singles out there
The story I wanted to tell is one that the country radio charts will not. It's a story of trailblazers & rule breakers and, most importantly, brilliant artists who will stand the test of time and inspire generations to come. HER COUNTRY is out now.
I love Tanya and this image and of course I don't know for sure, but I would be more inclined to assume she was inspired by the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, the longest-touring Black rodeo.
Based on what my timeline looks right now I’m not sure I can do this place anymore - so might as well go out sharing this profile of one of the best at it (and at songs, more importantly)

Pretty surreal holding a copy (ok, an uncorrected proof) of HER COUNTRY in my hands. There’s a lotta years of blood, sweat & tears in these pages, a lot of weight carrying these stories that mean the world to me. You can pre-order yours today 😊.
Last night at the Ryman Bob Dylan was like “it’s good to be back in Music City!…is it still Music City?” and we all nervously clapped, stuck inside of Nashville with the bachelorette blues again
what an honor it was to get to interview
@TTChilders
for
@nytimes
about his new album & video for "In Your Love," using his artistry for change & more.
this really got me: "I hate feeling like I need to be the hall monitor of treating people like human beings in country music. It’s exhausting." it truly must be. grateful to
@MarenMorris
(
@CassadeePope
). But she can & shouldn't stand alone.
There’s a really great lesson to be learned today from Jake Owen and that’s how to make a situation where others are hurt completely about yourself and your own tears. Honestly, expert level. Like white girl tears level. I’m impressed.
Cannot tell u how many radio, label,
promo etc folks I’ve heard say in my research for HER COUNTRY that kicking
@thechicks
off country radio was a mistake they wish they could undo. Here’s a shot to not do the same shit again, folks - we’ll be watching spins on that new single!
So, Brittany Aldean just went on Fox News and nodded as Tucker Carlson called for Maren Morris, the only female country act who reliably headlines arenas to debut in the last decade, to be kicked out of country music. Country is seriously lucky Maren has stuck it out this long.
“Good riddance,” folks on Music Row say as the most lauded (& profitable) female stars leave the genre/Nashville labels one after another. They think they won, but when the country radio levee breaks - & it will - their refusal to change will kill the genre once & for all.
Was so fun to chat with the one & only
@mirandalambert
for The Rolling Stone Interview (legends only!) for the next issue. We covered everything from her early days, to Vegas to Palomino & everything in between - and, no, y’all ain’t ready for “Carousel.”
I just watched a video from a country YouTuber about "country's cool moment" or whatever that fails to mention the role of Kacey Musgraves in all this (who won LP of the year, covered Rolling Stone), doesn't mention Brandi Carlile or the Highwomen (# trending topic post Newport)
Jason Isbell, Mickey Guyton, camo hats...there is some reframing from the democrats in terms of understanding who a country person/voter might actually be, and I like it! Wrote about it a little on the newsletter today....
.
@Jason_Aldean
I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence.There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting.
This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame
Hey, tomorrow my book, HER COUNTRY, comes out! Sure hope you read it & love it. This is me at a celebratory dinner Saturday night. A few hours before this I was a sobbing in my car because I thought I couldn't get a ticket to my daughter's dance recital. Doing OK-ish!
There are numerous country artists squirming right now who hide behind “apolitical” trying to decide if they keep their mentions of Bud Light in their shitty beer songs when they play them live and for that I truly feel absolute negative sympathy
Loretta told the truth, Loretta was fearless, Loretta was complex and told a generation of women it was ok to do and be all those things. She also told us that our assumptions about rural people were often so so wrong. My
@LorettaLynn
reflection, for
@NYMag
.
this show is absolutely insane and while I am sad it is not in Nashville or TX I completely understand it has to be in a state where weed is legal. it's the only way
I think it's much less important that Beyoncé get played on country radio than Beyoncé's country tracks creating a new space/appreciation/openness for country artists outside of the bigoted dorks in mainstream country radio, and new fans. And she will.
at one point today at the capitol my son kept inching away from my daughter & I and at one point, he was a bit out of sight. Within 10 seconds, before I could get him back within my line of sight, a woman to my left turned to me and said, "don't worry, I have my eyes on him."
silly to even acknowledge a tweet like this but last night my 7 yr old daughter stayed up till 10 writing songs in bed b/c she loves Taylor, so I do believe this man when he says she's a bad role model: what could be worse to him than someone teaching young girls to have a voice
Taylor Swift ain’t (and never was) “country”.
Taylor Swift is a terrible role model for young girls.
Taylor Swift is an ingrate who trashes the country that allowed someone like her who has mediocre talent to become successful and wealthy.
It’s time to Bud Light her dumb ass.
one of the most precious aspects of my career will always be the time I have spent with some of the greatest country/roots artists to ever walk this earth aggressively shit talking JD Vance.
the best humans on earth are the tall people that stand in the back at concerts. single folks, you don't need a dating app, just pick from the tall people at the back of a standing room concert. will be a 10/10 every time
the children leading the way, fighting for their own lives because the adults in power won't. as beautiful as it is absolutely crushing. we stand with you.
Cannot believe the hardback of HER COUNTRY is finally in my hands. I will have many more thanks to dole out but to all the women in this book, I sure hope I did your stories proud (especially
@mickeyguyton
@marenmorris
@spaceykacey
but absolutely not limited to).
for decades artists were going on stage w/103 fevers, mothers touring w/newborns before the c-section scars healed & singing through postpartum depression, and it takes a pandemic for us to only *just barely* scratch the surface of how unsustainable & unhealthy this all is
I just cannot understand how we got away with this being the headline to almost every story about a successful woman in music in the 90s. why did no one stop this
Not ready to fully wade in yet RE: Oliver Anthony but I find it wild to see men deconstruct & rationalize his lyrics like they're Howard Bloom on Shakespeare but then encounter Isbell's "White Beretta" and be like, hmm, sorry I didn't get it, lyrics too wokey confusing
Let’s go back to the old Ticketmaster ways, which was lining up outside the HMV for 7 hours to get a wristband for Phish New Years, and sending one friend down the street to get slices while u wait who is so stoned they end up eating all the pizza alone & forgetting to come back
If you're going to do a piece on Aldean, this is how you do it. The fact that "you have to know how you feel. you’re a person living in the world" is a question.
My rule about things is if you’re going to shit on country music you then have to also talk about the country music you love and why. Otherwise it’s so extremely boring and as unsophisticated as you think seem to think country music is.
festival headlined & dominated by women and gender non conforming folks sells our within hours, created waiting list....but I thought they told us women don't sell tix
Wow, we're thrilled to announce that All Things Go 2023 is officially SOLD OUT! We can't express how grateful we are to have been able to curate a lineup of the best artists in the world for the best festival fans in the world. Thank you for helping us make this our biggest year
I really don't have a take on this cause who needs it, but as someone w/an entire shelf full of bottles of alcohol people send me as promo (I could fill a bathtub), I do kindly suggest maybe it's time the country music industry takes a good look at its relationship to alcohol
it's the CMAs tonight which means it's the annual meeting of those of us who have been banned from the awards, we meet in a grotto underneath the bridge, look for the litterbox labeled "furries only" and you will find us
It is possible to be a country singer that’s not one of the five same people who always have to shoulder it, and speak out. It’s possible. Thank you
@ericpaslay
When things get tough, lately I repeat a lyric to myself from a
@joyoladokun
song: “life can change with the weather…somehow, things just get better.” In fact I did it this morning. Thrilled to make my
@nytimes
debut profiling this brilliant artist.
I know this is such a predictable tweet from me but I am so sorry, it’s just absolutely wild how much better the women’s CMA performances have been. Well sung, well performed, all different, emotionally present. I'm sorry it's just ridiculous really.
Don’t really know what to say into this app anymore but today I just wanna say protect trans kids at ALL costs and fuck everyone in this state who defines freedom as drunk cops getting to carry guns & not beautiful people living their lives exactly as they want to & need to.
@SadlerVaden
easiest to let the same small handful of people say the things that need to be said and take the heat for it over and over again while sitting in your mansion and not risking that the song you didn't even write might go to number 3 on country radio
Men successful on country radio rn make music that sounds more pop than anything else, & they are allowed to do so w/in the genre walls. Women have to be both different & conformist, and silent. There’s no win. It’s not the music that changes - just what room allows them in
For the decade that I’ve had a little backyard I’ve grown tomatoes, and the process has always been my favorite summer ritual. This year my tomatoes are dying because I simply cannot tend to another thing. I am out of room. Done. This was very sad at first but now feels radical.
ah let's see do we cover plane of former president who loves media coverage more than he loves his adult children or do we cover a revolution led by kids & teachers & people in Nashville who are protesting in huge numbers daily to keep people from getting shot, such a tough call
It's always wild to see a Country Music Thing suddenly become a national story, and it's usually because of something awful. And I always say this, but I think if the first time you're tweeting about country music is to point out the bad shit, you better boost the good too.
John Rich calling country radio, which plays women 10% of the time and won't play a song that even alludes to girls kissing girls "a woke system" is so much wild, honestly almost impressed
if you do not know the words to Delta Dawn you should be expelled from the genre. I am a Jewish girl from New York and I could remember those lyrics even after an entire bottle of tequila
“Been out since May” is truly the most bizarre bad faith thing to point out…like, it can’t be a racist dogwhistle if it’s been out for months old obviously!
this morning my 9 year old son asked me with all the seriousness in the world when he finally will get to go to the Ryman for the first time. this now has become my only life mission
Really can't believe that HER COUNTRY received a starred review in
@KirkusReviews
. I'm proud & psyched enough about it that I might not even feel mom guilt for like, 75 extra seconds today! Very very grateful.
No, I haven't heard the Kacey Musgraves album yet! But I did spent a good chunk of my life lovingly chronicling why her work matters so much in this book. So I guess that is what I have to say if you want to know what I think about Kacey Musgraves?
Loved having the chance to catch up with
@brandicarlile
and talk about loud guitars, building community, her new record & ideas for the next and just plain ole joy, for

Got my hands on the HER COUNTRY paperbacks today, in bookstores May 2. It’s hard to muster up the urge to self promo right now, but I will say that with everything going on in my state right now, and in country music, I stand by this book and the message it carries more than ever
Good morning...
@RollingStone
has the first excerpt of my book HER COUNTRY up today! It's Chapter 10, called "Can't Remember Shit." Really hope you enjoy it.
In the new book ‘Her Country,’ journalist
@MarissaRMoss
pulls back the curtain on the struggles women face in country music. Read this exclusive excerpt, a chapter titled “Can’t Remember Shit.”
waking up living in a state where abortion care is illegal is unbelievably surreal. wish I had better words, maybe I will some day. do not forget us, or Idaho or Texas and everywhere else to come, just because your personal rights are still intact. we will need you.
Happy book birthday to HER COUNTRY, which the algorithm was nice enough to remind me about. I still believe in this book and hope it can continue to find folks who need it. You can find it at your local independent bookstore!
👏🏾Look👏🏾at👏🏾God. I am shook, I am grateful, I am praise dancing…
So excited to be singing the national anthem at

on February 13th!

Do people know that it’s ok to nominate country albums and songs for general awards or do they think we just live in barns on bales of hay, don’t answer that last part
Thinking about the Chicks a lot this week and mulling how they were accused of "advocating murder" in Goodbye Earl and chastised while Blake Shelton named his bar after a song about killing his cheating wife and/or her lover and escaping prison via dog tinder? wild stuff
I want to focus on the
@leannrimes
future and this new era of music for her as much as possible but damn if I don't see performances like this and think country music simply shows its entire ass every time it doesn't try to claim and make space for a vocalist of this caliber

I try to avoid Twitter on weekends but this needs to be said, and I’m glad
@AdeemTheArtist
said it better than I could. I stand with the trans community today and always and country music is just as much yours as it is theirs. Full stop.
It’s 4/10 which means it’s one month until HER COUNTRY comes out. Which means it’s one month until it’s no longer just mine, but yours. And one month (or so) until I can stop trying to figure out ways to post about it on here! Anyway, here’s to that. Pre-order in bio

I just discovered I have carpenter bees burrowing into the wood on my porch - I don't want to kill them so the internet says play loud music next to the infestation for 2-3 days because they hate loud music and they will leave. what music do you think bees hate most
If I really wanted to know what listened to most this year I’d just look at the vinyl records I was too lazy to put back into the cardboard jacket so it’s just the stack of records in the flimsy white inner jacket thingies only next to the record player
two of my favorite rock songs this year are by folks you might label "country" and one of my favorite country songs is by a duo of indie rock musicians or whatever you call it. genres: can't live with 'em, can't live...something something something.

can't really believe I hit publish on this but I wrote about grief & losing my mom & not being able to listen to music on our music newsletter today. felt weird to share it but it helped me to write & I know there are a lot of us in this godawful boat
