That was one of the most fun tours. The band extended so much grace and kindness to us as we toured Europe with them. The very last show, the band surprised me by storming the stage on my last song, dressed as me (glasses and all) and sang along (there’s a clip somewhere). Real gents. Humble, talented, beautiful people and everyone that worked with them was the same. No coincidence there. Devastating and disturbing time for humanity. History is now, in technicolour with spatial audio. Seeing so many clips of the darkest horrors of inhumankind, some by possessed over-scrolling and some by a sense that we must witness the suffering, to bold/underline its realness, as something about the brutality of these nightmares can seem unreal at times. Hard to believe what us humans can do to each other. So many issues as one world we could be directing our energy towards. The power we could have with power in the right hands. Hands of peace. Building instead of destroying. The strides we could make. Very hard to see any good through all this bad.

The carpenter delivered the new studio door today. He took so much pride in making it and sending me photos of the progress as he went. I love seeing people take pride in their work. It’s one of my favourite things. People who are passionate about what they are doing. He took so much care in sourcing the wood. He made this door like it might be the last door he’ll make. When he dropped it off, he said he had been away for the weekend with his family. He said he remembered when he was a kid, he used to drive back from Kent to London and when they would arrive home, his dad would have to jet wash the windscreen, cause it was literally covered with bugs and insects from the drive. He noticed, when getting back to London from the same drive with his kids this weekend that the window was bug-less. “What have we done to the ecosystem?” he pondered. I love that he noticed and thought about this. It’s someone that thinks about these things that I want making my doors.

Is there more a mark of privilege than an existential crisis? The luxury of having enough mental real estate to have one. Have been dealing with a construction issue at the studio today and while I’m talking to the contractor all I can think is how unimportant this stuff is. All of it. Feel disgusted with myself for even caring whether the shelves are flush with the skirting or not and exactly how the sound-proofing will be affixed to the wall. WTF. Everything feels so mightily unimportant and minuscule and petty when the world is the only thing in need of a renovation. The line I come back to when asking myself why I care at all about this meaningless, surface, unimportant stuff is from Susan Orlean’s ‘Orchid Thief’ and paraphrased by Charlie Kaufman in ‘Adaptation’: “There are too many ideas and things and people. Too many directions to go. I was starting to believe the reason it matters to care passionately about something, is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size.” Focusing on the micro is all that is. Whittling down. Time to zoom out and disable the zoom in.
