This is one of the most important charts to explain what is happening in the Southern Baptist Convention.
There are no actual liberals among Southern Baptists.
There are simply many who are not all the way to the right on the spectrum.

Probably not the wisest or best timed tweet. They inflicted violence upon a man and removed him with force. Not the same thing as your tweet
@UTAustin
Imagine how many students could attend your university for what you’re paying him to not coach.
Actually, we did the math: 1,385
For full tuition & room/board: 588
Average student debt at graduation: $24,833
You could pay off the student debt for 604 graduates.
This is sad.
Anyone who dismisses Critical Race Theory as a necessary conversation within our society and churches need only see this terribleness.
@pastordmack
is a good pastor and good man. No one deserves this.
@KSPrior
It was a despicable set of people who sought to inflate their own egos and satisfy their lust for power by deriding you. I’m sorry you went through it.
You have always been a sound and good teacher. I’m glad you’ve found healing and peace out of it all.
@BruceFeldmanCFB
With this money, LSU could give full tuition scholarships to
1,415 in-state students
586 out-of-state students
Or they could pay off the student loans of 684 graduates from the most recent class.
Or they could completely fund the Student Services department at LSU.
@JerryFalwellJr
@LibertyU
@LibertyFlames
And here I was thinking what made Liberty unique was Christian distinctives, biblical morality, and a clear understanding that one’s moral character justifies their leadership position.
The unmitigated disaster
@LibertyU
begun under
@JerryFalwellJr
had only picked up speed under
@JerryPrevoLU
.
As an alum with 3 degrees who is graduating from
@Harvard
next month, the entire board of trustees needs to go.
The only hope for LU is a complete reset of leadership.
Allen McFarland has just been removed from his role as chair of Liberty’s board of trustees. McFarland was the closest thing the board had to a conscience, and is the only trustee to ever get Falwell to apologize. He will be replaced by Tim Lee, a longtime Falwell/Prevo loyalist.

The establishment is coming out for the establishment. The SBC needs clarity in all these matters, not obfuscation.
Jerry & Becki Falwell fit the profile of a predatory couple.
I agree with a 3rd party investigation of

to include these accusations, financial corruption, & abuses of authority.
The current Board of Trustees should resign and a new body elected by alumni.

‘She was the aggressor’: Former Liberty student alleges sexual encounter with Becki Falwell - POLITICO
It is time for the board of
@LibertyU
to conduct an independent third-party investigation into this and any other possible abuses of students!
@stephenaltrogge
A young preacher developed his entire sermon around how being under the influence of the Holy Spirit was like getting high on marijuana.
He took a bulletin and rolled it on stage, sealed it, and pretended to smoke it.
I was visiting his church as part of a seminary assignment.
Imagine a context where impressionable young adults are preached at that any sexual transgression is grievous sin.
Where friends are kicked out for private indiscretions.
Now, put 2 sexual predators as leaders of this spiritual context.
That’s what happened
@LibertyU
.
A POLITICO investigation, including interviews with dozens of Liberty officials, found a university community so committed to the Falwell legacy that even trustees considered it unthinkable to exert power over the son of the university’s revered founder
A poignant & prophetic call to the right focus for the Southern Baptist Convention by
@KSPrior
The SBC has a massive & unresolved crisis of abuse among its member churches.
Yet, many fundamentalists would have us believe the greatest danger is women preaching.
Matthew 18:6
@GodlessLiz
FWIW, almost all church services since the Protestant Reformation have been midday.
In the US, since the colonial era, church services have generally started around 10-11 am.
In Roman Catholicism, Saturday afternoon mass is as popular as the Sunday morning.
@Bezner
@RickWarren
Southern Baptists have never made affirming the Baptist Faith & Message (of any version) a test for denominational fellowship. We shouldn’t.
We use association for mission and evangelism as our test for fellowship. And we should.
We prayed for
@DannyAkin
today.
His day yesterday must have been one of the hardest of the past few years.
He is leading his seminary well and is an encouragement for me.
We're slowly losing the rich heritage of hymnody in our churches.
Read this great
@joecarter
write up over

about "9 Things You Should Know About Christian Hymns." So many fascinating parts to every hymn in our hymnals. We need a hymnic renewal.
@jdgreear
@ChristineCaine
JD, I agree that stopping human trafficking and ending these women objectifying shows is essential.
Maybe finding a better activist than Christine, a known plagiarist who marginalized another woman’s work by stealing it, is also a good aim too.
@KSPrior
It’s complicated (of course)
There are a ton of open positions in work that is not validated in pay or social circles. We’ve pushed so many to get degrees that we’ve create market imbalances where staffing shortages exist in some sectors but there is an over abundance in others.
For many of us in the SBC, a thorough, eviscerating review is exactly what is require to provide healing and renewal.
Only when we can create systems to support victims, root out abuse, & create safe spaces for all will we fulfill the Great Commandment, Commitment, & Commission.
An investigation into the SBC's top body could have a potentially massive toll. Based on what's already out there, its findings could be profoundly damaging to the SBC at a time when they are already hemorrhaging members.
Many know this.

Heard from a friend that they ran into Becki Falwell while touring the campus of

They were very put off by it and wondered why the Falwells are still present on campus at Liberty. Maybe

can provide perspective.
@save71LU
might want to know this.
It is worth noting that Southern Baptists have seen 5 major agency and seminary lead positions open up between 2018 and 2019.
Every single one was filled by a white male.
The SBC had an opportunity, technically 5, to show its changing...it did not.
Beloved Bible teacher Beth Moore is leaving the Southern Baptist Convention.
“I love so many Southern Baptist people, so many Southern Baptist churches, but I don’t identify with some of the things in our heritage that haven’t remained in the past.”
@bartbarber
I appreciate you & your leadership, Bart.
Our convention needs action.
We need these immoral legal moves to end. We need universal & vocal condemnation of abusers like Paul Pressler. We need to see contrition & restoration no matter the cost.
All while we continue praying.
The argument that “autonomy of the local church” inhibited Southern Baptists’ ability to patrol & address sexual abuse has always been faulty.
We have been asking for a denominational database, not control, for awareness. We were rebuffed.
#SBCToo
In 2007, Rev. Tom Doyle, a former Vatican lawyer whose warnings about sexual abuse were ignored by Catholic officials in the 1980s, wrote a letter to SBC leaders.
He said Catholics also argued they had no control over dioceses, and that the SBC faced a crisis

It is, perhaps, one of the boldest and courageous actions I have seen a leader in the SBC make in the history of the denomination. Dr Akin’s leadership in this way is admirable and historic.
A good article by

No minority or female candidates appear to have been considered.

This is a completely disrespectful and malformed attempt to position the point of this student’s thesis as advocating a position it doesn’t hold.
You are libeling this student who is attempting to provide a contextualized understanding of sharing the Gospel. Shame on you.
Plagiarism is stealing from other people.
It is sin. It is wrong.
I have no idea how people like

@DrTimClinton
can be allowed to have platform access and be in front of people.

Woke up to the news that

I’ll take our chances with the federal constitutional republic we have over here as being the optimal context by which to encourage religious liberty and Christian charity.
Important thread from
@JonathanMerritt
.
Growing up around fundamentalists who questioned the salvation of progressives, I disagreed with them vocally.
Turnabout isn’t fair play, Jesus is bigger than political (or theological) identity.
I disagree openly, publicly, vehemently with many of my conservative friends (
@JerryFalwellJr
,
@ericmetaxas
,
@EWErickson
), but I take offense when my progressive friends proclaim that these people are no longer Christians because of their politics.
@USATODAY
"Unrestrained use" is inflammatory and inappropriate. Here is the current President's use of pardons and commutations versus his predecessors. You can say the nature of his use of the power is questionable but may not call it "unrestrained." This is poor journalism.
It is shameful that the House tax reform plan still includes the removal of the adoption tax credit.

The loss of

The unrepentant silence from the 6 SBC seminary presidents over a poorly worded, uninformed, and hurtful statement is equally grieving.

It is sad that, even after a hundred years of case evidence, we still allow misogynistic fundamentalists time occupy platforms to defame Godly women. But that is the naïve reality of fundamentalism.

Dear Christian,
Don’t feel bad or believe you’ve failed God if you don’t read your Bible through in a year.
It’s an extraordinary high mark, akin to running a marathon. Perhaps we can begin by working through the Gospels.

A Christian’s influence is only able to have reach when it is backed by being moral, honest, and, you know, Christ-like.
When a Christian leader falls in these ways their sin impacts the testimony of Christ and gives reasons for unbelievers to object.
This is insanity, even for

Fundamentalism is dogmatic, conservative theology taken to an extreme in order to purify religion through enforcing 2nd & 3rd order doctrines as foundational for belief. It is unwavering in its beliefs, seeks absolute conformity in belief, & separation from those disagree.
@edstetzer
Respectfully, I disagree. Many of us are called to get a PhD for use within a local church context.
Some churches still seek PhDs for certain ministry positions.
You want to have evidence of the positive changes going on
@SWBTS
here you go.
Dr Dilday is a good man who led SWBTS very well. For the past 25 years, his name was scandalous at SWBTS and because of any fault of his.
I am overjoyed to see him referenced here.
When I was
