Proud to announce I got a first class honours degree in Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at Bournemouth University 🥳 The last four years has been amazing with so many opportunities and lots of people to thank. My dissertation about Blackbird survival turned out well too (80%).
It is great to start my new role on Lundy Island with the Bird Observatory team!!! The island will be my home for the next 6 months, so keep posted for all things bird related.
@lundybirds
A BIG Redpoll day today here in Skagen, Denmark with counts of between 2010-2700 individuals heading SW up to midday. Crazy numbers with estimates of ~95% Mealy, ~5% Lesser and less than 1% Arctic with a few candidates seen. Pic from recent ringing of a male Mealy
@skagenbirdobs
It was great to see this stunning Woodchat Shrike here on Lundy today. Arriving this morning, it has been actively feeding along the East side most of the day and showing really well at times.
@lundybirds
A bit crazy couple of days on Lundy with the flock of Redwing remaining, a passage of hirundines, Willows and Blackcap, the start of the 'Greenland' Wheatears, a snazzy male Golden Oriole and 2, possibly 3(!) Night Heron! Well done Tim for the Purple Heron too.
@lundybirds
A bit of field craft, perservance, and time was all that was needed for this stunning Pied Flycatcher to put on an incredible feeding loop around Millcombe.
@lundybirds
Bit graphic but an unfortunate end to this Pallid Swift found dead under a tree here in Skagen. Most likely arrived yesterday in the nicest day we've had in a while (SE wind & 11'c) but the change in temp (N wind & 1'c feeling -3'c) probably lead to the demise.
@skagenbirdobs
A nice juvenile Arctic Redpoll (Hvidsisken) caught and ringed under licence at Skagen this afternoon amongst a small flock of Common Redpoll (Stor Gråsisken). A real snowball of a bird.
@skagenbirdobs
Night out on the cliffs of Corwall catching Euro Storm petrels with the West Cornwall Ringing Group. A total of 47 caught including 2 British birds ringed elsewhere and a Spanish ringed bird too! All birds handled with licences and following HPAI guidelines.
@_BTO
@CBWPS1
The past couple of days has seen the return of these Stor Gråsisken (Mealy polls)! Thinking migration was over and then they're back was super exciting. We caught about 20 yesterday under licence and saw about 350 today migrating SE. Part 2 of the influx?
@skagenbirdobs
A nice start to the morning with this Jack Snipe caught and ringed under licence. One of 141 birds caught inc Bramblings, 'Northern' Treecreepers, Goldcrests, Wrens, Song thrushes, Chiffchaffs, Robins etc. Three Parrot Crossbill flying over were really nice too!
@skagenbirdobs
A ringing session at a site near Maenporth this morning saw 12 birds caught, ringed and/or processed including this female Firecrest. At least 2 are wintering in the area.
@CBWPS1
First day starting Conservation and Biodiversity masters at Exeter Uni, Penryn Campus and a post-welcome walk saw 2 Spotted Flycatchers (feeding on this building!), Firecrest, Goldcrest, Nuthatch, Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers.
@CBWPS1
Great to receive my S permit! Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way. A few of the species I have been fortunate to help monitor through ringing, helping to contribute to

An adult male Rough-legged Buzzard was a nice spot by Simon Jr. today. This is his 2nd individual in this area this winter but an elusive bird that has been present for at least 2 days, skillfully avoiding his photo archive of this species. We finally found it again!
It was a great weekend getting to know the island and completing some of the first few jobs. Tasks have included starting up the daily bird census, helping set up the ringing site, and helping with a guided walk looking for seabirds. Look at that view!!
@lundybirds
This Starling is at least 4 years old (ringed December 2021) and he looks absolutely stunning! He has been singing just down the track from my accommodation here on Lundy Island whilst showing off his range of colours and iridescence. What a bird!
@lundybirds
A quiet morning resulted in 38 birds caught inc Brambling (adult male pictured), migrant Wrens, Blackbirds etc. More Parrot Crossbills, 00's Starlings in off, a Hen harrier and Bearded tits the best before the storm (and some naps).
@skagenbirdobs
The quietest morning so far since I've been here with this male Blackcap being the highlight. Flocks of Whooper Swans were coming in off all morning with a few (less than 5%) dark juveniles mixed in. Blyths was still present too (Day 21).
@skagenbirdobs
The last week has been really good for migrants on Lundy with hundreds of passage warblers, a few hirundines, a steady stream of Wagtails (📸White wagtail), about 50 Wheatears 📸, Puffins galore, birds in song and departing 📸Redwing too! Spring at its best.
@lundybirds
The second adult male, Rough-legged Buzzard, in Simon's N Germany patch. This bird, albeit quite shy in nature, has apparently been present for a few weeks now, so it is a very well-known bird for the area. We've seen it about 5 times this week! All features are shown below...
Great to visit the Ruan Lanihorne area today with
@CharlotteFoote5
. Some fantastic habitats and some great birds too. Pics of my 1st ever Purple Heron taken from the car and the Black-winged Stilt showed well feeding with a Greenshank in the channel nearby.
@CBWPS1
A slightly more unusual capture this morning with this Common Scoter caught and ringed under licence. Bird was in good condition and flew off strongly after release.
@skagenbirdobs
Really nice few days down in Cornwall with some amazing people! Nice to see the Surf Scoter duo sandwiching a LT duck, experly viewed through the pebble(😅), and W:751 (aka Apples) and offspring W:909 (aka Strudel) doing well down in Falmouth.
@CBWPS1
Nice to find this stonking male Green winged teal at Stithians Res with
@CharlotteFoote5
. It was roosting with 40+ Eurasian Teal in the South Cut off but only visible from the road verge rather than the feeder hide.

Yesterday was one of those days I won't forget in a while, quiet ringing session in the morning, a stunning stormy evening and then night catching a Shorelark on the beach. Aged BTO 2/Danish 1+, female.
@skagenbirdobs
The 'new in' Snow Goose at Slimbridge WWT spent the day feeding on the Tack piece before coming onto the Rushy to roost. Very wary and left after 10 seconds of the evening swan feed, an interesting individual albeit unknown origin.

@slimbridge_wild
Nice to help
@jdhbull
with some Greater White-Fronted Goose counts this afternoon at Slimbridge WWT. A real wild goose chase with a total of 244 found (195 adults and 49 juveniles). Productivity of 1.96 calculated from the 25 broods found.

After moving into Cornwall recently, we checked out the local reservoir (Stithians) in the thick fog. After reports of Spot red and Ruff earlier (both not seen), we were surprised to find a Little stint, Dunlin, 2 Ringed plover, 6 Snipe, 3 Lapwing, Wood sand, Green sand
@CBWPS1
It was a great privilege to see this Golden Plover up close and personal this week on the island. An unexpected treat as we heading off to our survey sites. This individual was the first of at least 10 that have been recorded on Lundy Island this past week.
This reminded me of helping with
@WWTSlimbridge

The video shows a great interaction between Eurasian Teal and a Fox this morning with

Thanks to all involved today, a successful Poole Park Greylag goose catch resulted in 41 Greylag geese caught. Birds were ringed under licence and included 37 new (20 goslings and 17 adults) plus 4 retraps (3 from 2019 and 1 from 2020).
Keep an eye out for any colour rings!
It's always great to see migrant Whimbrel on Spring migration! One of the nicest wader sounds up the Bristol Channel/River Severn on their way North. This individual is currently one of two awaiting a clear weather spell to leave
@lundybirds
.
It's crazy to think I've been on Lundy for almost three weeks. With migration and breeding kicking off on the island, check out the sightings page here: . Recording not only species but behavior is always important when understanding the island's residents.
One more Bewick swan related tweet as I consider myself very lucky to live close to Slimbridge WWT. This place is almost certainly the best place in the world to get up close and personal with this beautiful species, we are very lucky. 💛🖤
Nice 5cm of snow, and still falling, as well as -3'c today this morning. Migration count had a few Goldeneye, Scaup, Velvet scoters, Waxwings and roosting flocks of Common Scoters.
@skagenbirdobs
Despite lockdowns I saw a total of 196 bird sp this year inc 3 lifers (Pacific GPlover, Melodious and Ob Pipit). There were lots of amazing adventures with
@CharlotteFoote5
inc Norfolk, moving to Cornwall and graduating from
@bournemouthuni
in Nov with a first.
Happy New year!
Berkeley Shore had a nice selection of migrants this evening including 5 Common Sands, Whimbrel, 2 Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 30 House martin, 25 Swallow, 15 Sand martin, Hobby, Whinchat, Wheatear and 9 Yellow wagtails. Also present: Kestrel, Peregrine and 46 Mallards.
#GlosBirds
One of the highlights of the morning census is 'getting to know the locals'. This Meadow pipit proudly sits on this wall most days in front of Old Light, parachuting to all the females around. Today, he settled long enough for his pic to be taken. A little stunner!
@lundybirds
Dissertation handed in about a month ago 🎉 and just submitted my last two exams for Bournemouth University 🎉 That's three years of Ecology and Wildlife conservation complete plus a placement year too 🥳 Results in July to follow.

Nice to find a Red-flanked Bluetail today along Silvervej, Skagen this afternoon whilst we were out birding together. This is one of the first seen in Denmark this autumn and the first local record since 2020. Also 5 Greylags over!
@skagenbirdobs
It's great to monitor the Manx Shearwaters on the island through day and nocturnal surveys. Since March, artificial nest box checks have been made to monitor individuals' site fidelity, breeding success, adult survival, and to catch and ring any new birds under licence.
Few nice bits and bobs around Grenen/Skagen the past couple of days with Twite flocks, Richards Pipit, 'Eastern' Stonechat, Snow Buntings, Shorelark, Common Redpoll flocks, 8 Whooper Swans, 3 GN Divers (scarce), Grey Seal (rare) and calm N winds.
@skagenbirdobs
Today was my last day at Skagen Bird Observatory for the year. It had been an absolute blast the last couple of months and looking forward to returning. Today's blog update written below includes snow, gulls and an Isfugl which is very nice.
@skagenbirdobs
Was not expecting to have to hand catch this beauty of a 1st winter female Black Redstart inside (work) Trago, Falmouth today. Later seen post release on the building at 17:00.
@CBWPS1
Spurn vis-mig highlights this AM include 133 Tree Sparrows, 44 House sparrows, Short-eared owl (pic), Crossbill M, Marsh harrier juv, Merlin, Hobby, Snipe, 21 Yellow wag, 684 Swallows, 27 Sandies, 5 Swift all S and 2 u-turning Greylags, the best birds ;)

Its been getting dark before 16:30 for a while now but it just means earlier Woodcock catching! All birds caught and ringed under licence.
@skagenbirdobs
I am very privileged to say that part of my job is to watch Puffins! For the past couple of weeks, and throughout the season, myself and the seabird assistant will be keeping an eye on these charismatic birds and their breeding successes here on Lundy.
@lundybirds
Another busy day for these Stor Gråsisken with over 100 now caught and ringed under licence in just two days from two nets. More surprisingly 95% are adults! Also a new species for the year caught, find out more on the blog here...
@skagenbirdobs
Cornish birders!
With licence we have started to colour ring Coot at Swanpool as part of
#CootStudy
. As seen below the rings are white with a black alpha-numeric code. Please report sightings to (report a bird page) for instant life histories.

Not what I was expecting to find in Skagen today! This snazzy adult Puffin was just casually floating by whilst looking for gulls. It's a real rarity up here, but it has been a better-than-normal Autumn for this species this year.
@skagenbirdobs
Ringing was busier than recent with roughly ~50 birds caught, ringed and processed under licence. A highlight is always the Træløber (ssp familiaris) also know as the 'northern' Treecreeper.
@skagenbirdobs
I am pleased to announce 83 Greylag geese were rounded up, metal ringed and colour ringed yesterday as part of the Poole Park Greylag goose project. I am massively thankful to

@HOSbirding
A Redpoll and Fieldfare migration day yesterday resulted ~250 birds caught and ringed under licence inc 2 Arctic (see quoted tweet), 90 Mealy, 15 Lesser and 14 'Redpoll spp'. 'Northern' Bullfinches, Goldcrests, a Woodcock (pic) plus other spp made up the rest
@skagenbirdobs
Today, we ringed two Arctic Redpolls! 😍
The Arctic Redpoll looks similar to the Lesser and Common Redpoll but has a much whiter and lighter appearance, with a rump that resembles a sugar cube.
Nice evening walk along the River Severn at Berkeley Shore (S of Power Station) included 64 Canada geese, 8 Greylag, 37 Mallard, 9 Common sandpipers, 10 Oystercatchers, 8 Turnstones, 11 Yellow wagtails, 6 Grey heron and this Spanish 🇪🇸 ringed Black-headed gull!
#Glosbirds
After a clear night last night with SE winds, there were migrants at Spurn today. Marsh harriers and Buzzards went S, a Barred warbler showed well, Mandarin was new in and a scattering of Pied flys and 2 SE Owls were very nice! 124sp seen by all.
@spurnbirdobs
#Spurnbirds
One of the highlights of today has been this juvenile Red-throated diver, a bird I had all to myself for about an hour this afternoon! Nearby, 31 Bearded tits, Velvet Scoter, Eiders, migrant corvids and a Wheatear. Ringing: a Belgium Blackcap out of ~75 birds.
@skagenbirdobs
Collected my gold Duke of Edinburgh award today from Buckingham Palace. Great to meet Royalty and many celebs inc Marry Berry, John Collins and Levi Roots. Also, very nice gardens with Pochard, Coot, Mute Swans and Ring necked parakeets all present.
#londonbirds
It's always great to spend time watching the Bewicks on the Rushy at Slimbridge WWT. Roughly 40 on the Rushy this afternoon though 115 on site. These three nicely show the variation in bill patterns. Whooper present too.

It's good to get the nets open in Millcombe Valley today on my day off. A quiet session with 5 birds caught. The highlight was this male House Sparrow who was ringed as a chick in the box in 2021, and recaught today. The colour rings are part of a BTO RAS project.
@lundybirds
Always great to see Great Crane Project Common Cranes away from Slimbridge WWT. This flock of 7 included two unringed birds (adult+ 2cy/3cy?), Wendy+Albert+juv, and Oakie+Sherbert. Viewed from distance to limited any disturbance.

Great weekend with
@WashWader
. Started with a small catch of Oyks Saturday AM, followed by data checking and then resighting Sunday resulting in 6 CR Curlew rings read! Nice supporting cast of White front, Pink feet, 3 Barn owls, Short eared Owl, Whoopers and 6+ Marsh harriers.
Saul Warth Fulmar has been successfully picked up by a friend of mine. Not in the best of shape, very wet and close to death but will be looked after until, hopefully, fit for release. Will keep people posted...
