i value what balaji does. i think viciously stress testing classes of authority is a net good for society. it's tumultuous and sometimes results in overcorrection, but what comes out from the ashes is often better than the previous version

If you ask Dylan Matthews why almost 90% of the public no longer trusts his profession, I guarantee you he’ll have no answer.

building an audience—whether it’s one person or millions is one of the hardest things a human can do. most people never get past the noise floor because they don’t have anything compelling to say or they can’t deliver it in a way that resonates. the few who succeed usually either have insane charisma, relentless persistence, or a unique insight into the desires of others.

@SpencrGreenberg counterpoint is that people who blindly use AI to create arguments are not the people who are convinced by proper true arguments in the first place. it's all emotional and they now have a veneer that can easily peel off

@deepfates a friend of mine (incredibly smart guy, oxford graduate) to train his forecasting skills on these platforms i never asked the specific reason but he used to apply for many EA-related job openings so i assumed it was to get better at risk forecasting

reading the classical works i see how scarcity let authors be freely redundant and scattered. there were no feedback loops making them optimize for attention so they just blasted everything they could think of like spending 3 pages describing a kitchen
