I think it's more the fact that (not all, but) a lot of these kids exist in a bubble where they genuinely believe they've gotten where they're at on talent and hard work alone, when outside the door are thousands of equally talented hard-working kids with no connections at all.

I used to read stories as a kid where terrible things would happen to everyone over the age of 14, 15; the kids would band together to survive and I imagined myself with them. Rereading them now I know I'd be a victim of the terrible thing instead, and it hurts a little bit.
