Side altars are just so good. Beautify the whole place, give people a place for devotions, and priests can do private Masses without making it awkward for everybody or blocking the Blessed Sacrament. 100% win.

Heard confessions tonight & when I exited it felt like Good Friday night. But Eucharist, candles, cloths, were all there. Somehow it was palpable that this time the Bride was gone, the Body. Every year we lose the Head & Groom but tonight you could feel the Bride was locked away.

Hey Gringos: You don’t have to be Mexican to have an ofrenda on Nov. 2. It’s a great way to teach kids who liked “Coco” about All Souls. There’s no requirement that you use skulls and bright colors; just get pictures, decorate according to taste &teach about prayers for the dead!

@CharlemagnumPI His “I discovered much later that I actually liked books” is telling. There are so many books that I hated at 11 or 15 or even 22 (often started & gave up) that I loved when I read them 10, 5, or even just 3 years later. I think you’re right: he couldn’t have done Iliad at 14.

Do a weekly holy hour to get in that quiet focused extended prayer. And then come to Mass to worship with the whole church, incl kids & the handicapped

So, we added three Masses to the weekend so we’d be certain we could keep SocDist. Normally our earliest Sunday is 7:30, but 47 people came out for the new 6:30am Mass and I’m pretty darn proud of them.

Started class by apologizing to my all-girl class that yesterday was poorly planned, poorly executed, and I had blamed them. They took it, but asked why so formal? I said b/c it’s fair, but also cuz I doubt you often get apologies from adults, esp men. And heads in unison nodded.

We hear regularly that TLM-ers distrust & oppose this pontificate. Maybe that’s true. But at least in America, the vast majority of Catholics frustrated with Francis are suburbanites/rurals, who watch a mix of CNN and FOX, and have only attended Mass in English the last 50 years.

We don’t talk enough about how great the risk of despair is for people with chronic illness, chronic pain, undetermined diagnoses, etc., nor how much one of the graces from the Anointing of the Sick is courage and hope when that despair is threatening. These are real.
