I know it is a small step, but today we start collecting the first data set (our pilot) for the Montano Lab!.
Fieldwork led by
@RhayzaCortes
, we are back in the Bolivian Yungas <3
A great moment to share a glimpse of our new look (webpage under construction)
Officially opening the Montaño Lab
@LSU
next year!
I am looking for 2 PhD students to start Fall '24. We will focus on ecological questions related with community assembly and the mechanisms behind diversity patterns across scales and taxa.
Please share or contact me!
Life announcement 🍾
I am happy to finally be able to share these news! I will be starting my own lab! Soon I will join the amazing faculty
@LSU_BioSci
as an Assistant Professor.
Stay tuned!!! As I will be recruiting students and a postdoc soon (most likely Fall '24)
I applied and was offered a position in this lab in 2019. Sounded like a dream... but then I was recommended by SEVERAL (seniour) faculty to talk with former lab members. After 3 or 4 zoom calls, I declined. All agreed it was hell.
A secret long known...

Our long due collaboration assessing changes in mixed-species flocks across the Andes is out!

I will be joining

It will be just my baby and I, so great adventured ahead!
If you are there, please let me know. Would be great to meet you!
Consequences of English linguistic hegemony in Science. An example with Colombian young researchers but TOTALLY real for all of us who are not native speakers.
Great work

I just received an invitation to review a paper from a well known journal.
It is addressed to: Ms. Flavia Montano
Are any male researchers addressed as "Mister" or "Mr" when requested to serve as reviewers?

Paper accepted on May 18th.
~9 weeks for the editorial process (proofs, details, etc.) to be done... , finally out today...
I open the link...and...
MY LASTNAME IS MISSPELLED!
Is it that hard to type an ñ for a journal?.
I am latin, my lastname has a ñ. Respect it! 🤬😡😠
Manuscript submitted!
The first of an amazing collaboration that gives me the privilege -and pleasure- to work with Bolivian data. Nothing better than putting your science where your heart is: the Bolivian Andes.
Reviewers should really be less brutal...
Coming from a non-native English speaker (rev. 2) to a non-native English author (undergrad working on his first manuscript)😡
"I consider that English is precarious for a scientific journal with the prestige of XX"
It was NOT.
Happy to share our new prepint.
We share our collective thoughts (214 LatAm authors) on the challenges Neotropical Ornithology faces when examined only under "Global North" lens, and some insights on how to move forward and beyond.
Today I will have a beer (after my little one goes to sleep), to celebrate an email I just got.
This is a first for me!
Manuscript came back with only minor revisions on the first round!
Cheers!
Happy to share our paper

I was surprised by the amazing skills to fit my whole last name in the cookie. This is great!
Yes, we do have TWO last names, and I am so happy for my new institution to acknowledge it.

Took a long and painful trip. It will be harder than expected to settle in the city (no car until the license.. and no license in a couple of months... bc Lousiana)
No joke with a baby... in a pandemic.
But, as of yesterday, I am officially a part of the

Our long, long overdue manuscript on Andean mixed-species flocks was finally submitted today!
An amazing collaboration among peers who are as crazy and in love with bird flocks and mountains as I am.
Fingers crossed and let the editorial games begin!

Having a really hard time now. Personally, mentally and healthwise. And can not stop feeling overwhelmed and guilty, and stressed, about the constant entry of emails, due dates and duties.
Can we just pause? For one second? I can not get on my feet just yet. We cannot.
Because academia is hard, we should (and must) celebrate all victories. Today, our manuscript came back with minor revisions!
Chapter 4 soon to be out! 🌎🐦⛰️🗻

So the paper submitted to Auk (now Ornithology) came back with minor revisions!
This one did not make it to the dissertation, but almost, so Chapter 3b is almost out!

More soon!
It took for ever, or felt that way.
But today, I finally submitted the first manuscript of the postdoc.

I DID IT! Soon to be Professor Montano (will need to short the super long Montano-Centellas??)
I am super proud and happy, for all the moms, single moms, women in STEM, WOC, Global South researchers: We can. We will.
More than a year ago, my husband decided to just leave and not be a husband nor a father anymore.
And he left my country without ever looking back.
So, this divorce was a solo battle, in my own country and our own laws. Costly, long and painful.
And is now done. Cheers🍻!
We attended an important online meeting today. Together.
It was not easy (it was his playtime time) but I did my best. This should count as an achievement.

Our manuscript was submitted in May, in August we submitted a revised version (comments were not too bad).

Truth is, this was not secret. I was lucky enough I had good people encouraging me to ask directly about this. Nevertheless, I always think how so many people -in somehow more powerful positions, senior faculty- knew this, and did nothing to stop it.
I did not participated in this. But I can vouch for each line here!
As a single parent, is even harder. Still, we keep going.
We fight a different fight, at every step.
"...female postdocs with caring responsibilities stand out from other subgroup analyses. We find that mothers are most unhappy, depressed, anxious, stressed by care work and their work as postdocs. They report more personal conflicts ...and are most socially isolated."
We color ringed this individual in June 2016 in the Andes of La Paz (3500 m asl) during the fieldwork of my dissertation research.

I am REALLY upset reading the revisions received by my mentee. Especially because a colleague of ours, a native English speaker, proofed the submitted version.
Yes, we were lucky enough to have someone on our network able to help us with this... yet... 🧵
Maybe all preprints:
"... bioRxiv is not accomplishing its stated goals and that
authors may be using the platform more to establish priority, as a marketing enhancement of papers.."

So... random emails from predatory journals are getting pushy!
"...My approach is to inform you that I need your obligatory submission on or before August 26th"🤣
At least they got my name right this time.
