Fairleigh Ayrshires & Holsteins - NZ. Proving you can still be a successful dairy farmer without BW, a calculator & a plate metre.
Deere,Cows & County Music.
A very sad day at Fairleigh today. The grand old lady,Fairleigh Gold Favor, aka Chubbs,passed away this morning,just 2 months short of her 20th birthday.Former Royal Show champion & absolute pleasure of a cow to work with both in the paddock & the show ring.😭
Loved by all
What do you do when your neighbor is way behind on his tractor work and he's been a bit crook?? You saddle up your gear on a sunday,when he's away, and get shit done for him!! It is Christmas after all.....
#agchatnz
I know my 170M is in her working clothes here,but hey,she works for a living, but I couldn't resist taking these cool (quite literally) pics this morning.
@JohnDeere
3rd milking in for the first 20 cows,no turning back now. Cows have taken to it remarkably well. Will build the herd up over the coming weeks. Been a long,hard slog from planning to milking,but we're finally here.
Huge effort from all involved.
@DeLaval
He's trying to basically say that one cancels out the other. So then if I continue to eat meat and dairy but don't fly on a plane,does that make me as much as an climate change"hero" as him???🤔
Joaquin Phoenix: "I struggle so much with what I can do [to combat climate change] at times. There are things that I can't avoid -- I flew a plane out here today, or last night rather. But one thing that I can do is change my eating habits."
Genuine as-it-happened video!
Crazy find,$580 cash!!💰💰💰
Did the right thing,found the owner,travelled about 15km on the roof of his Ute before it fell off.
Hopefully some good karma coming my way
I will sign off for the day with what I believe to be the best sign at ANY of the Groundswell protests anywhere today. Well done Rural NZ,love ya to bits!!
( Sent to me from a mate at the Timaru protest )
Not ashamed to admit I shed a couple of tears while watching the news tonight,I'm so bloody proud of you today rural NZ. You stood up,you conducted yourself well and I'm prouder to be part of this rural community than I ever have been.✌️
Glad we made to call to go down this route all those years ago. It may not be "the NZ way" but by hell it makes things a lot easier on man and beast.Fresh cows,stale cows,dry cows & springers all under the same roof.
Today marks a very special day for us, 25yrs ago today we moved to our current farm. There's be some big changes since then as well as the highest of highs and the lowest of lows along the way. Farming is character building to say the least but I wouldn't change a thing
I struggle with the concept that Auckland can have an ongoing wastewater/sewage issue,spilling into waterways,it makes the news but continues to happen,yet if a dairy farmer has an issue/accident with their system for a day or 2 they are smashed with a 6 figure fine & conviction
A milk tanker ran off the road today & skittled a power pole in the process so it was first time real world test for a power cut at the robot barn. I'm happy to report the generator started automatically & everything did what it should.👍👍
Well folks,we have a broken shoulder blade,can't do anything for it,just needs time to heal, could be 6 weeks.
If we had any luck it'd be bad luck!!😬
Thank you all very much for you kind words & wishes today. You're a great little community,one I'm proud to be part of. ✌️
Finally home!
Had a mega day today at Winton show, winning South Island Ayrshire Champion cow with 7yr old Fairleigh HT Samantha. We then went on to win the inter-breed champion cow with Sam. Pretty frickin stoked to be honest!
Makes the hard work & long hours worth it.
I left my house at 4.45am this morning,haven't been home yet.Ive milked 350 cows,fed close to 800 head then swept & cleaned the barns they were housed in. Haven't stopped for breakfast,in fact I haven't eaten since 5.30pm yesterday. This is not healthy,this can not be sustained.
Man who kept his boat besides his house was ordered from the city to put up a fence to hide the boat from view. So he built the fence and hired someone to paint it.
Worst thing about daddy daycare while my wife is in hospital with our new arrival is that our 2 girls hair looks like it was done by a one armed blind man wearing sunglasses......in the dark with the lights turned off!! Its definitely not my forte 🤔🤔
My darling wife's Xmas present arrived today. And because I'm such a gentleman,I won't make her wait till December 25th for it, I'll let her use it next week.😉
What a crazy few days! I wrote a thread about my thoughts,etc about the new winter grazing rules,the media picked it up,it went to print,I got sent to Twitter jail then we had TVNZ give coverage to farmers thoughts on the new rules. Hopefully this has helped make some changes
Nothing is more satisfying than dropping grass for harvest on a beautiful sunny day. It's why we do what we do, providing good quality feed for our livestock so they can provide good quality food for the people.
*Don't @ me about the loader.
**Don't @ me about no front mower
I'm currently sending away 6,000 litres of milk/day,so that means I should be using 66,000,000 litres of
water/day??
Weird thing is, I only have 8 30,000 litre tanks on farm & 6 of those are reserves?🤔
Something doesn't add up...
Hi there
@DavidParkerMP
, my name's Bruce. You probably don't even personally read these but I'm reaching out anyway. My family & i are lifelong dairy farmers in West Otago in the lower south island. We treasure our cows & our land like 99% of farmers in this Country. I'm just
We obviously had a stampede in the barn last night due to the thunderstorm as this morning I found 2 cows in the feed lane and one cow down with a dislocated hip.😭
Regardless how hard you try,life will always find a way to fuck you over!
I've just heard that Steve Hansen has become a "Sir" in the New Year's honor's list,now if
@dairymanNZ
doesn't receive a knighthood for "services to Twitter and the BBQ meat sector",then there really is no justice in the world!!
Just came across this decent sized "tractor grabber" that has appeared in one of my wheat paddocks after all the wet weather we've had of late.
About 5ft deep......😬
I have NEVER once done a wordle or whatever it is. Haven't even bothered to find out what one is or how it even works,not even tempted.
Am I the only one??
Social distancing for my 40th with the family out in Western Southland (I mean who doesn't love a visit to the sausage capital of NZ). Not the original plan but then most peoples plans have been turned upside down in the past 10 days! Stay safe and wash your hands ✌️
What is the thought process that makes you feel you're entitled to willfully damage people's property?
At what point are you allowed to start dishing out punches to the face to offenders like this?!?!
I'm a farmer right.... and farmers can do anything. Well my wife was looking to buy bunks for the kids and I may have said "I could build them"...... and well, here we are!! Wish me luck 😂
Been a mega day here,been spraying since 5.30am,AI'ed cows, site meeting with milking machine crew, maize being drilled,more spraying,cut some baleage,had a tractor arrive,more spraying,beet being drilled,more spraying... she's all f**king go, I can tell you!!
With the arrival of the new digger at Christmas time,I had to build a bigger sandpit...... not sure if I got carried away or am "futureproofing".
Not bad for a morning's work from a "farmer builder" 😂
#happykids
Springer check tonight and we have hit the absolute FUCKING JACKPOT!!!
Fairleigh Shottle Toni EXC has delivered us a sensational Mogul heifer calf. Couldn't be more stoked!!
To all the armchair critics saying "it's easy to drive farm machinery after 2 days training", this is real life people,not Farming Simulator!! You can't just "press reset and go again",there are people's lives and lots of REAL money at stake!!
Here's a photo from when my husband with 20 years experience rolled his tractor. Its easy to dismiss what you don't understand, but a little empathy would go a long way.
Used our last ever straw of Picston Shottle tonight on our first ever EXC classified cow. Hopefully Patsy holds and has a heifer. There might only be a handful of straws left in the country. Last straws that sold publicly went for over $750 each!
I assume that 99.7% of dairy farmers in NZ are doing the same as us tonight, putting the cows in the "party paddock" in preparation for Xmas morning.
#TimeSaver
28yrs ago,our family made the biggest decision of our farming career by deciding to sell the original farm & move to & convert our current farm. A couple of months ago we made the 2nd biggest decision of our farming career.
Stay tuned.
@DeLaval
#BlueCrew
The Barn system in NZ has plenty of knockers & has a high price of admission. But with weather like we've experienced the last couple of days it is worth every cent. The piece of mind it brings knowing these cows & calves will spend the night warm & dry alone is priceless.
So proud of
#teamfairleigh
@ Gore show this weekend. After the lose of Amber at the start of the week,we pulled together a small team of 5 cows/3 calves.
Highlights
Champion Jersey,
Reserve All Breeds cow
2nd All breeds 6yrs
1st & 3rd All breeds 4/5yrs
2nd & 3rd All breeds calf
October employee had been driving trucks for 14yr,grown to absolutely hate them he said. Loved the change,being outside,etc by going back to dairy farming. Tells me tonight,he misses the trucks & he's going back driving. Me & 1 staff for 560 cows now. Calving on the way. Yay
A lot of people knock the deep south, "oh it's too cold", but you can't beat the sunrises in winter!!
@WeatherWatchNZ
*I hope this isn't a sign the world isn't ending....😬
2023 is almost over,thank F**K for that. On the surface it looks like it's all beer & skittles but this has been the hardest 12 months I've ever endured,aged me 10yrs both physically & mentally. I even lost the love for it for a while.
Close the chapter & onwards to 24.✌️
Because of Mbovis there have been no cattle classes at shows this year,the Southland district usually has a young handers comp at 5 different shows each year with points awarded for overall. We at Fairleigh broke in 20 calves so it could be held here today.
#GivingBack
John didnt really take much time to look through my profile & pictures because if he did,he'd have seen that during this snowstorm I have all my animals inside and not my machinery. He's also missed the fact we have a cow on farm who is retired but is still here at 19yrs old.....
Typical in New Zealand. Sheds for machinery, but no shelter for cows in winter (nor shade in summer). After all cows are slaughtered when they're 4-5 years old and totally wasted by overproduction.
