🌹Fair pay, democracy, equality, a living planet + free education
✊🏽Transform UCU + UK education
I spoke to
@BBCWorld
today about
@ThamesWater
wanting to put up your bills by 44%, after 350 pollution incidents last year, yet paying £158m dividends in March + giving its CEO £1.7m.
Best alternative, within
@hmtreasury
fiscal rules, is special administration, no bailouts
Thanks so much to everyone who voted in this historic
@UCU
General Secretary election. It ain't over!
With the incumbent ahead by just 0.1% of members, we need:
🗳️a recount
📧the government to enable e-ballots
❌action to remedy all violations of UCU rules on social media, email
Thank you to everyone who voted in the
@ucu
election! There are so many kind, caring people in our union, so many who see we can turn education around. I’m overwhelmed by support I’ve been shown. Whoever wins, I hope we all work together for democracy, equality + fairness.
Vote + we'll rebuild
@UCU
to be a winning force. We'll:
👩🏽⚖️boost our legal department, have a strategy +actually defend workers' rights
🎓back branches with facility time +make every rep a labour law expert
🖥️easy IT reform to never fail a ballot again
👉🏽
How can we turn around the failures of
@thameswater
and
@Ofwat
?
We can't afford shareholders or captured regulators any more.
And modern ownership gives workers + billpayers votes in the boardroom.
On

@egoncossou1

Let's restore a functioning
@UCU

I'm running for UCU general secretary, for fair pay, democracy, equality, security, rebuilding UCU, pro-labour investing, a living planet + free public education.

@ucu
Jon, as it happens we had a written question on this at the
@CambridgeUCU
+
@OUbUCU
hustings last week, to send in today.
Because it's a 156 page judgment + the case itself exposes the damage of Twitter "pile ons", please see my written answer rather than a tweet:
"At the heart of this is a failure of the experiment of privatisation...
"It's not just water, it's energy, it's rail, it's the NHS."
We need modern public ownership, with votes for staff + billpayers on the board.
On
@BBCWorld
talking about how to turn
@ThamesWater
around:
@dyfrig
@ucu
What a characteristically witty and charming suggestion Dyfrig! Actually it was the Court of Appeal, and you have a pension and a pay rise because of the action we took, and the strike pressure, both of which the incumbent you support opposed. Read more here:
If you vote for me
@UCU
general secretary, goal
#2
will be that staff elect a majority of every governing body.
No more self-selecting crony failures that cut uni pay by 21%, or fail on equality. No more complacency about democracy at work.
Platform 👉🏽
We must make
@ucu
a model employer, as we collectively bargain for the same in every uni and college. That’s:
- fair pay
- voice at work
- ending the pay gaps
- at least 26 weeks paid parental leave for all
- zero tolerance for discrimination
Read the plan:
At
@UCU
we must end the gender pay gap, including by ending unequal child care responsibility.
26 weeks paid parental leave for *everyone*, not more gendered child care.
Vote in the General Secretary election, and we'll do it:
3. End pay gaps now👇🏽
We must reverse the over 21% real pay cuts since 2009, including 13% pay cuts since 2019 alone,
@ucu
. UK universities have had the worst decline in modern history.
We will change, if you vote. Join us:
1. Fair pay 👇🏽
5. Workers' capital in our pensions must be pro-worker, and pro-planet. We must:
🛢️divest
#USS
from fossil fuels,
🌞vote our shares in all companies to go 100% clean energy,
🌹vote to recognise unions, more worker directors, end the pay gaps.
Vote
@UCU
👉🏽
Happy new year everyone! 2024 can be the year we reverse the cut of £5,500 every lecturer has lost on pay since 2019 (at least), and over *£11,000* cut since 2009. If you vote
@UCU
elections, we will change it.
Download my platform .pdf here:
7. We must protect a living planet:
🌳lead by example, 100% clean energy
@UCU
itself,
🎓rank all uni's on actions, so students choose
🌞divest pensions, endowments from fossil fuels, shift to clean energy
The planet's future is too important: vote!👉🏽
Job security + ending casualisation
@UCU
is fundamental.
If you vote, we will:
🔖enshrine job security in written collective agreements at every uni + college
🖊️shift to permanent contracts as norm
🤕throw the book at law-breaking employers
Join us👉🏽
Three steps to fix
@thameswater
-
1) special admin to wipe out shareholders, hold directors accountable + give debt collectors a haircut, to enable investment
2) public ownership, long-term, not temporary
3) ban re-privatisation of our public services
@betty_friedrich
@ucu
I think everyone was incredibly impressed with Vicky's campaign as well - I certainly was, and it was really good to get to know her better on the husting circuit. Definitely a brilliant advocate for workers who should stay central to the union movement.
8. Free education is a human right in international treaties the UK signed.
Let's take it seriously:
🎓restore public education funding
🤑replace forced-fees with fair tax and merit
🗳️reform, not just spend: with democracy at work
Vote

🖐️democracy at work
🟰equality + 26 weeks paid parent leave
💷security

🌍a living planet

Pension heist yet again.
@DrJoGrady
seems to want to take reduced
#USS
contributions as the employer from UCU's own staff.
This is the wrong message for universities. If you vote, every penny of reduced USS contributions will go to workers. It's theirs:
We were told all USS savings would be passed on. But we've been offered only a 3.5% uplift when employer contributions will fall by 7.1%. Our employer says USS savings may not be "sustainable" and will be "temporary". We think future changes should be part of future talks. 4/6
Our employer has today been sent official notification of our intention to ballot for industrial action over our Campaign for a Safe and Professional Workplace Culture:
🧵
Vote in the
@ucu
election and get rid of the failed incumbent.
Vote for a functioning union, that will win for members, treat its staff with dignity, and be a positive force for social transformation 👉🏽
🚨 Pay dispute latest 🚨
Following hollow arguments about the impact on grade structures, we’re now told by our *trade union* employer they are “ideologically opposed” to offering a progressive flat sum pay rise which would better help lower paid staff.
#CostOfLivingCrisis
🧵
Our members have today overwhelmingly voted to take industrial action over
#WorkplaceRacism
and the wider organisational dysfunction affecting staff.
72% of members voted to strike on a 79% turnout. We trust our employer will now start listening.
#JobsEqualityConditions
@UCU
Worth remembering the new Adequate Wage Directive article 4 requires all EU member states to do action plans to get over 80% of workers covered with collective agreements for fair pay…
… and the UK is on a much poorer rate of about 25%. So we need serious change.
It’s beyond belief that the incumbent
@UCU
leadership is in a dispute with its own staff, by trying to trouser their pension money.
If you vote for me, every penny of reduced USS contributions goes back to workers - we’ll change universities by setting a good example.
Pay dispute escalates
Last month we declared a pay dispute with our employer after our members rejected their final offer. The first dispute meeting held this week saw no real change. We've therefore escalated the dispute and requisitioned a meeting involving UCU lay officers.
@calebmorganday
@conversiontales
And we may add, 7758 votes or 45.2% of voters, is not a majority either! Nor is 6.7% of total membership, despite holding control of all the union machinery.
The most important election for the Labour movement to win - can’t wait to get rid of this lot, and rebuild for fair rights at work, clean energy, and working public services.
@Feargal_Sharkey
@thameswater
@jpmorgan
@Ofwat
Except it is easy, not actually all that complex as the FT article makes out. And we certainly don’t want Thames Water to go to Southern, which deliberately misreports.
Special administration is simple - wipe out reckless shareholders, creditors get less:
After our successful strike ballot we have today notified our employer of our intention to take strike action on 30th May, day 2 of
#UCUCongress
(sector conferences). We hope this will focus minds ahead of negotiations tomorrow and our strike action can be quickly called off.

@DrJoGrady
The candidates have stats from UCU, which I shared if you look back, for December 2023. Basically everything I said was true, as you might have expected! That’s why I kept saying it despite various threats and slurs and will keep doing so.
@DrJoGrady
🤦🏽For everyone here, the real question - if we're honest - is why UCU didn't take a single case to court for members since 2019, despite the incumbent promising "precedent-setting legal challenges"?
We're proud of the USS case because we:
- exposed the nonsense USS valuation,
-
@jesus_margar
Good point - it'd have to be a new contract. But for many short-term, casual staff, employers will just unilaterally tell them it's varied, and they have to agree. Not much many people will do.
@rorfitelli
@SimonJPTrafford
@zenscara
@RedSazzler
@DrJoGrady
It's not a "posture" Robyn, or if you think it is, we have a fundamental disagreement.
I'm asking, will the other candidates support a move to:
- get to 26 weeks paid parental leave for everyone
- fight for every worker's right - zero tolerance for discrimination
@SimonJPTrafford
@zenscara
@RedSazzler
HNY Simon - yes, unequivocally. I've worked my whole career for equality. I'm the only candidate who:
- commits to 26 weeks paid parental leave regardless of gender
- promises zero tolerance for discrimination, to fight every case

Hi Matilda, there are big differences in how we would actually defend member rights and advance equality. Here’s my previous answer.
Talking about a National Education Service, skills and uni, on
@BBCRadioLondon
with Jumoke Fashola today - a pleasure.
... less so is today's Tory gimmick for 100k more apprentices, paying less than adult min. wage - about 50k short of where we were in 2014!
Clip on fees👇🏽
A really innovative way to do hustings from
@qm_ucu
, and delighted to be there.
We've got to rebuild UCU to be a functioning union, tell the truth, and reverse the total failure of the last 5 years.
Excited to get to meet all four candidates for General Secretary and learn what their plans are on issues that matter to our members.

Not at all - but important question. The big issue over which there is a lot of discretion is pay levels (rather than not hiring). So an amazing example is the actor playing Prince Phillip got more money than the Queen in the Crown due to “market” rates. Need to change bias.
Great article by
@sandralaville
on water - with my two cents:
🌊"England should join Scotland, Wales, Paris and most of the world, and restore public ownership [of water] using the legal framework of special administration that already exists."
@highamian
@ucu
Of course I do, Ian. Gender reassignment is protected by the Equality Act 2010, and I've long argued we must expand the statute's scope. Common law + human rights already protect more:
+ as you're at Gratham:
Hope that helps!
@jesus_margar
There was some reporting before Xmas, and now everyone's forgotten. Business loves it. The point is that people *have no holidays* if the employer gives the 12.07% "uplift" in the salary.
It's back to the position before this case:
@EdinUniAFAF
@ucu
Hello EAFAF. Being at work without being in a union is like driving without insurance, so everyone should join!
I've written out an answer to a similar question from a recent hustings

. Hope this helps 👉🏽
