I remain convinced that one of the main reasons for the growth of "scholarly activism" is academics giving in to neoliberal discourse and internalizing that the Humanities must be "relevant" and must solve some kind of perceived problem. They cannot simply exist by themselves.

There is heavy pressure for today's academics to become "scholar activists". I have always been sceptical as I believe it is deeply unprofessional to bring personal politics into the classroom. Such scholar activism is presented as an unequivocal good. But what I have seen...

The irony here is that most non-English-native academics have no choice but to speak and read multiple languages (i.e. English and their own) if they want to engage with what is perceived to be the state of their field. It's not an "obsession", it's necessity.

Exactly this. In my experience, much of UK Music academia is stuck in a "canon-deconstructive" mode that doesn't make sense . "Why do we listen to composer A all the time and not composer B?". In fact, most are not listening to composer A all the time, so the question is wrong.

@seventiessally What I find really funny is that they want masks to be a "symbol" that the pandemic is not over, of solidarity. Then when people reinterpret it as a symbol of everything that's been taken for us (as you so put it), then they are not a symbol anymore, they're just a little thing.

In the whole notation/no notation, classical/non-classical in HE debate, one of the assumptions that fascinate me is that, because many students do music outside classical settings, it follows naturally that this should be represented as well in what they learn in the classroom.
