You *do* get extra points for defeating an independent MP, but only if the independent is actually standing in the election.

The main question really is how many does he win by? If his majority is only a couple of thousand, you're probably better off picking one of the Liverpool MPs and captaining them.
If he wins by 5,000+, you're in business
