As professionals, we must get better at detecting autism in girls at an earlier age. Take for example special interests which often get missed as they do not fit the (male) stereotypes. Here are just some examples of special interests I've seen in autistic girls under 11 yrs:...

Where do all the children & young people with moderate-level severity mental health problems go for support? "Not severe enough" for CAMHS, yet "too complex" for our school based Mental Health Support Teams🤷‍♀️ So many children are falling into this gap in service provision😞

@flavaadit @janinemas0n Ok I've watched the whole thing and it's brilliant but so confusing! Who is in the right? Can a clerk remove people? How come the first chair was posing as a clerk? How can someone be in trouble for missing 4 meetings that didn't take place?! Local govt procedures are baffling!

As one step towards improving earlier diagnosis, we need to challenge stereotypes of what we think autism looks like and and listen to autistic girls. If you want to learn more about why autism can be missed in girls, I recommend @AutisticGirls_ report:

CAMHS referral rejections: "It's not mental health, it's neurodevelopmental" "It's not mental health, it's behavioural" "It's not mental health, it's social care" The exclusion of certain groups by the narrow CAMHS definition of mental health seems to me to be a rights issue 1/3

I used to work in CAMHS & have great respect for colleagues still there but I think it is important to name the structural issues which are in part being driven by commissioning decisions. "We're not commissioned to treat neurodevelopmental conditions" is not good enough in 2024.

If you are a UK early career researcher with a doctorate and you work in mental health or addiction, then I would highly recommend this *free* career development programme. I was in the first Grow cohort and it was transformational, so do check it out!

@chinchinar I have the privilege of teaching @UEA_ClinPsyD trainee clinical psychologists and have found trainees open minded about CBT. I tell trainees- put aside any myths you've heard about CBT and learn about it properly, then you can make an informed decision about using CBT approaches.

Mental health professionals, did you know: 💥1 in 3 people have a skin disease 💥They are at increased risk of poor mental health esp anxiety, depression, low self-esteem + social isolation So when was the last time you asked a client how they felt about their skin condition?🧵

It is harder than ever to tell who is a qualified mental health professional and who is not. Far too many people on social media selling their clinical services as "psychologists" without professional regulation and training. This petition is very timely, pls check it out⬇️

Gov't hammering home the covid "personal responsibility" message is *so* damaging for the mental health of people who are acutely sensitive to feeling responsible for keeping others safe and are already taking abundant precautions. We need more targeted public health messaging.

Twitter can be a great way for researchers to connect but nothing beats an in-person event. So many inspirational folks at #EmergingMinds like @Kadra_A_ @lfoulkesy @pollywaite @SarahShenow @fam6 @DrHollyBear @Mental_Elf . Looking forward to continuing discussions!

When you are praised by your supervisor for taking sick leave when you are sick, you know the presenteeism culture in healthcare is bad. We are under huge pressure not to cancel clinics, we know it means even longer waits for our patients. "Heroes" aren't allowed to get sick.

We have good evidence for a number of psychological interventions for mental health conditions that have been tested in LMICs... And yet so many are not being used in practice. So it's fantastic to see this new implementation resource from @WHO ⬇️ #globalmentalhealth

That sinking feeling you get when you discover another gaping hole in service provision for child and youth mental health🤦‍♀️ We see daily evidence of the impact on families of @Tamsin_J_Ford 's stat at #RCPsychIC yesterday that CAMHS is only 1/4 the size that it needs to be!

@AgnesAyton @Leic_hospital @PHE_uk @ShaunLintern @MattHancock @CMO_England @BorisJohnson Medical staff have been asking for higher quality masks for ages in ALL wards where there are COVID+ patients. They are being told that Level1 PPE (surgical masks) is sufficient for non-AGP but is it really when the patients are coughing in enclosed areas?

This to me is one of the dilemmas of being a mental health professional on social media: Do we call out blatant misinformation and bad takes, and so risk feeding into the controversy that the original poster was hoping for, thus boosting their reach? Or not engage?

CBT Therapists, it is important that we are aware of how CBT is talked about (and misrepresented) online. This is why discussing what CBT is + what it isn't is a vital part of the contracting process. To borrow from Helen Kennerley: "CBT is on trial and I'm on trial, not you".

This is a good encapsulation of why CBT -- the worst and most popular form of therapy -- is completely useless. Every one of our behaviors is there for a reason. It lifts some weight from us, it helps us avoid something hard or scary in our pasts, it serves some purpose to keep

A few thoughts after submitting my first #clinicalacademic fellowship application: 🏁Estimate how long you think it'll take, then TRIPLE it 🏁Embrace feedback 🏁Costings suck, ask for help! 🏁Grant writing is another language, it's ok to find it hard so be kind to yourself🌞

Our society's obsession with achieving perfect skin + equating this with wellbeing/success never fails to fascinate me. It is no wonder that there are high rates of depression, social anxiety, low self-esteem + suicidal ideation among folks with visible skin conditions like #acne
