I went on Dave Zirin's show
@EdgeofSports
on

to talk about standing in solidarity with Palestine at the Olympic trials, the call for the IOC to ban Israel, and encouraging more athletes to speak up. Full interview here
It was an honor to run at the Olympic trials, and an even greater honor to organize with other athletes to stand with Palestine in the race that represents the highest level of American marathoning
Silly parts of my interview with
@Olympics
aside, they asked me what the Olympics "means", and they didn't publish my answer - I mentioned the Palestinian call to ban Israel from the Olympics
Just as apartheid South Africa was barred from the Olympics, and as Russian representation is currently barred, apartheid, genocidal Israel should be barred from the 2024 Olympics
I talked about the power that sport has to foster mutual respect through healthy competition, and that's what the Olympics supposedly represent. But it's impossible to do that while ignoring the real violence being committed by nations against helpless people
Beyond embarrassing. We’re 11 months into an unmitigated slaughter with approaching 10% of the population estimated killed. “Ceasefire” doesn’t mean shit at this point. Arms embargo is a MINIMUM
this is why it was important to set a hard standard on Palestine for DSA endorsements. because as soon as things get difficult for those candidates and elected and DSA needs to affirm that we stand against apartheid Israeli violence, they will dramatically abandon ship
The insane pressure on dsa electeds to bend their back and renounce the organization for its anti apartheid stance is why we need to prepare everyone we send in with the idea they are operating “in the enemy camp” and to act accordingly

I think that's because basic human needs like food and shelter are inherently uncommodifiable on the market. Even by capitalist logic, people can't make a "rational economic choice" to skip them. It's an effective monopoly by the owning class.
Since people seem to love this here is the video of
@duck_dad
hugging me when he qualified for the trials, and saying “I need to hug my wife!” I’m saying “you ran 2:16??? Holy shit!!” (I had also just run the marathon and he obviously finished before me)
something that stuck with me from that video is the incredible bravery of the pallbearers not letting the casket drop as they're being actively beaten by the IDF. imagine being so used to repression that you're able to handle that
I'm going to go insane watching polite retractions from major media outlets days after they report crazy made up shit in service of whipping up genocide frenzy
we're all pissed off but let's not forget that the democratic party is actually a bad and untenable coalition in the long term and as the left grows we need to outgrow it. that's not happening rn, obv. but keep it in mind.
on the hikari shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo. we're going 200mph. It's extremely spacious and comfortable, it runs every half hour. It stops at several minor cities with ~3 minutes of dwell time, basically negligible. this is a million times better than flying
@VERBAL_CHANCLA
@sam_d_1995
do you know how many people are killed and injured in car crashes every day? I swear people are so wilfully terrified of the people around them and not the actual statistically more common dangers
a lot of people say the words "systemic" or "institutional" in front of racism but their only conception of what those words mean is "widespread", not like fundamental to and inseparable from the systems they're talking about
I love when I walk into a room and my beautiful clunky cat comes charging in after me. she goes stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp and then she rolls around on the floor
@mtsw
@PostCultRev
you dorks this is not how it works, all this means is that the Fed is trading assets for cash, and the banks have to trade it back in the near future. it's not a direct giveaway
@inafutureage
i think there's a very fundamental issue that modern capitalist cities aren't really made for living. they're warehouses of real estate capital. so even "liberal" city administrations prioritize stable property value appreciation (enforced through exclusion) above all else
rent forgiveness, not deferral
@tedwheeler
@dkafoury
@OregonGovBrown
money doesn't just show up to backpay rent. all you're doing is temporarily pausing a financial crisis by making several months rent due all at once in the future vs spread out right now
great article in which the WW sets up a pointless adversarial relationship between two different free preschool providers with the tacit assumption that you'll agree that the one that will have universal coverage by 2030 is bad, for some reason
Multnomah County’s Preschool for All program requires its providers to pay teachers between $19.91 and $37 an hour… quite a bit more than the average Oregon child care worker, who makes $13.39/hour.
when I called our reps and senators I could barely get the words out. getting ready to raise our child has made me see the entire world differently. thinking about the babies who are killed, or made into refugees, or, at best, born into occupation is agonizing
I can’t stop crying. I have long cared about Palestine, but I’m feeling everything so much more deeply now that I’m about to become a mother. Our babies deserve to live in freedom.

"CDC confirms that double-masking significantly helps prevent the spread of COVID-19" oh yeah what about indoor dining at restaurants, what effect does that have
Okay. We know we have been saying this a lot but...it's time to sign. It's five-days-til-deadline, no-time-like-the-present, 110% Time. To. Sign.
The deadline to sign is THIS Sunday, July 5 at 5pm.
I really wanna encourage athletes to attend this. I know a lot of you out there see this injustice but are afraid or unsure of how to speak out. One of the primary goals of this panel is to give you all the tools and confidence you need to take a stand.

lots of people are rightfully furious about this and might be even more furious if they knew how ridiculously targeted this rule was created to be in order to strip Caster Semenya of the ability to compete. this rule was created within the last few years.
Namibia's Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi have been withdrawn from the 400m race at the Olympics by World Athletics.
They are said to not be eligible for female classification.
The same rules are affecting Caster Semenya, Francine Niyonsaba and Margaret Wambui.
cool as fuck seeing the NYT op-ed columnists comparing bernie to the "trump way of doing business" and then putting this in the first paragraph of their endorsement
If after tonight's display you don't think the
@NYTimes
is out of touch, check out this racist gem in their endorsement write-up:
"Basket-case governments in several nations south of the Rio Grande have sent a historic flood of migrants to our southern border."

last year, 1.25 million people in kerala were displaced from their homes because there was twice as much rain during monsoon as usual. climate crisis is already happening.
Swaths of India are becoming literally unlivable bc of heat, climate change is destabilizing monsoons that provide cooling relief in the summer, it’s amplifying electricity + water shortages, crops are dying and farmers are killing themselves. We’re a country of 1.37 BILLION.
oh shit i played like 2 hours of basketball yesterday and i am so sore. how is it possible for me to be this frail and weak. i hate lateral motion, i am only physically capable of running in a straight line
@OKftl
@AndrewDessler
you still have to shed excess heat your body creates. can't speak for acclimation to heat alone, but re: exertion - well trained athletes actually sweat earlier than other people, because it allows their bodies to regulate temperature more efficiently
the paramedics in the (free!) ambulance were like "are you sure you want to go to the hospital, if they treat you it could be very expensive" "how expensive?" "maybe several 10,000 yen". 10k yen is $70
I showed this tweet to my husband while we were on our way to Japan last week. Then, the day after we arrived, I had a health scare (I’m fine) and rode in an ambulance to the ER where I had to get imaging. Total with no insurance was $300
what does it mean when you say you’re “calling for a ceasefire” but you hold the executive branch and you keep sending bombs to kill this beautiful baby and so many more like him. how can you look at yourself, or at your children, without seeing his face?
I miss you too much my little baby..

Why is the Israeli team allowed in FIFA competitions when Israel has:
1. murdered Palestinian athletes
2. used Palestinian athletic facilities as detention centers
3. allows teams from illegal settlements into IFA?

Laying out what a lot of people pointed out during the downtown clean and safe contract renewal last year - Portland's most powerful business lobbying group basically embezzles most of it's funding for lobbying activities from a public contract
Writing this is risky personally and professionally, but it’s imperative for me to share what I learned about how things really work here. If Portland’s going to get better, we must grapple with the city’s underlying dysfunction.
is there any category of person with a stronger average ratio of "highly educated, well-respected and considered intelligent" to "susceptible to falling for the first crackpot cult leader they come across" than software engineers?
He didn’t just want to build a company. He wanted to build a machine - a growing sphere of influence that could break past the walls of that little office in Berkeley and wash over the world as a force for good.
Not just a company, but a monument to effective altruism.
