I didn’t become a physician for status. I did it to change my community, teach, and support children’s mental health. This is my calling, and I won’t stop.
It's my first day as a

My wife and I had a talk.
She insisted I keep in visible range three things when I am driving my car:
1) my medical school ID
2) my white coat
3) my stethoscope around the rear view mirror
Why?
Her thoughts: it might make police hesitate just a little. Just maybe.

I often wonder how many physicians are we going to lose before this becomes a focus for healthcare in a meaningful way.
Won't have attendings if we can't protect residents!

I'd be willing to bet that nearly every minority resident has shared a meaningful moment with a cafeteria worker, administrator, greeter, janitor, engineer, or another healthcare adjacent worker in the hospital. Let's be honest, diversity in medicine is still lacking.

I am a human. I am an American. I am a United States Navy Veteran. I am a father. I am a husband. I am a friend. I am a brother. I am an uncle. Yet there is one identity that precedes all of those titles: I am a Black man in science and medicine.

There's a lot of excitement around a 43% increase in Black medical school applicants.
What I'll honestly be excited about is a reflective 43% increase in Black medical school acceptances.
There's a difference.

There’s an indescribable power in a patient recognizing that I understand their culture. When they see me, they open up, sharing more about their healthcare needs. This connection builds trust, strengthens provider-patient rapport, and leads to better adherence to our plans.
Appreciation moment: Had a residency interview today at

I said, "I will cry for him with triumph because I'm his child psychiatrist!"

During my BeyGood fireside chat with Ivy, having my wife by my side filled me with immense gratitude. Nearly 20 years of life's challenges, and she's been my constant. Her faith, echoed in her words: "you don't surprise me when you succeed, only when you fail," is everything.

Be careful not to take anti-racism work simply as a component of your job. Antiracism is a component of your life. There is no way you can be anti-racist at work, and then go home and be David Duke. It doesn't work that way. It has to be a component of your existence as a human.

When I penned this article, I had US in mind.
By us, I mean the minority interns who hope to have mentors who see them as more than a checked box.

In the confluence of culture and medicine, it's clear: representation isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. Future generations need role models who mirror their experiences, resonate with their roots, and reflect their truths.
Very soon, I will pen a thought piece on the complexities of being a first generation physician and the family dynamics that ensue along the arduous journey.
The ups and downs definitely have a negative impact on wellness which already comes at a premium when you are first.
I’m started to understand something my mentor Dr. Joel Oppenheimer tried for help me understand a long time ago. URMs spend a lot of energy and time in grad, law, Med, etc school trying to increase minorities recruitment to X school while they are there.

The collision of culture and medicine is crucial for creating a more inclusive and empathetic healthcare system. By blending diverse cultural perspectives with medical practices, we can better address the needs of all communities and foster greater understanding and innovation.
