@erconwell
In the evening, grab a drink and change things up by pretending you have other things to talk about than work, and then after a short silence continue to talk about work.

notifications, with reviews, are going out to contact authors. PCS will also show these details in a few days. Of 3182 submissions, 234 (7.4%) were withdrawn or quick rejected. 1530 (48.1%) received R&R. 1384 (43.5%) did not meet the threshold for entering round 2.
#CHI2023
decisions have been sent (are sending), and PCS now reflects the decisions. CHI2023, with the new Revise&Resubmit process, accepted 28.39% of papers, which was ~60% of papers that could and did resubmit. Reviews will follow early next week.
The volunteer form to be an AC for
#chi2024
is open until 15th May. Please re-share!

The
#chi2024
papers cfp is now on the website. Along with a post about the small tweaks we've made this year. In particular: managing paper bloat, reducing reviewer time pressure, and adjusting slightly the threshold calculation being invited to R&R.
Review invitations for
#chi2024
just went out in a massive batch. The ACs all worked really hard the last 2 weeks (shorter than
#chi2023
), to create an extra week for reviewers (more than 2023).
We’re 🙏 for everyone that can put their expertise+time into the review process ❤️
Phil Palanque is now announcing
#chi2025
at
#chi2023
(
#chi2024
was announced last year at Hawaii). It will be Asia. Yokohama - back there after cancelled
#chi2021
Were you an AC for
#chi2023
? The very least you deserve a sticker for your badge!
Please come and say hi to me,
@JRicoWilliamson
or Stefanie if you see us, so that we can thank you in person and give you a sticker - if you want one. Especially if we’ve never met you before!
Im pleased to say my course on reviewing papers for CHI has been conditionally accepted to
#CHI2022
(after never taking place at the cancelled
#chi2020
). Probably virtual. And maybe in collab with
@acagamic
. Lots of unknowns for now, but I’m excited!
The
@acm_chi
#chi2024
Full Paper track is 👉now open👈 on PCS!
Dont forget to read about the changes this year:
There is no word/page limit, and no artificial cap on the limit, but you do have to declare its size category during submission.
#chi2024
will be in Hawai’i, chaired by
@jjorge
and
@floydmueller
. There’s currently an open volunteer call to be on the committee on the early website:
This is back to pre-covid numbers - 2% growth on
#chi2020
, and 23% growth on
#chi2022
(after 2 years of shrinking)
#chi2023
. The 45 subcommittee chairs (in 18 subcommittees) will now work with the 444 ACs (senior reviewers) to allocate workload and organise some 9000+ reviews.
My big anxiety for
#chi2023
is that I’ve forgotten what everyone looks like (since
#chi2019
). I was bad with names before 🤣. Say hi to me if you see me. I am definitely not blanking anyone, but have a tendency to smile but not talk if I’m not sure if I know someone.

Excited that our
#chi2024
workshop on Cognitive Personal Informatics, and living with neurotech, was accepted!
@CSchneegass
@Jwan_shaban
@HoriaMaior
@AnnaCox_
& I look forward to discussing personal informatics, digital health, & designing for reflection, with you! More info soon
As per my own sanity policy, I waited a few days before reading the reviews for my reject (separating emotion and action) - I’m thankful for the pages and pages of feedback we received. It’s evident that we were NOT clear enough on a few key things. Onwards and upwards.
#chi2024
🎉.
#CHI2023
best paper and honourable mentions are now listed. Thanks again to the 5,800 reviewers that rated papers, 480 ACs that managed the reviews, and the representatives from each subcommittee that recommended the awards.
#CHI2023
just released the list of awarded papers for this year's
@acm_chi
conference 🎊 (click on tab to see honorable mentions too). Congratulations to all authors (including those not on the awards list, because everyone is advancing

knowledge!)🎊
Sometimes I really just want a big map with HCI researchers laid out geographically across the world on it. So I can see where people are. Or who is around a place.
@sigchi
#CHI2023
round 1 decisions (based on a threshold of at least one R&R recommendation or higher) are due out Monday 🤞. Either a) Reject or b) R&R (not rejected (no papers are accepted yet)). The latter can then revise and resubmit by Dec 13th.

Fun time on Thursday - spent a few hours with the

papers team, sharing stories about our past, learning about each others research, and talking about the ups and downs of our work together for the next 12 months!
Quality of review and Size of [experienced] reviewer pool are two oft-cited concerns for
@sig_chi
as it continues to grow. Good news - my course
How to: Peer Review (for CHI and beyond)
has been accepted to

Here's my analysis of reviews produced for
#chi2023
and the review process in phase 1. tl/dr better reviews approach 1000 words, and 1/3 of papers are not producing reviews, 2/3 are not producing enough (!)
FYI any new author, struggling to write the start of your paper or report. This is how writing happens - it’s so interesting to watch. Contributions starting all over the place and it grows and edits down etc.
#chi2023
#chi2024
Would love to watch how my own papers grow!
Provocative alt.chi from
@AdvaitSarkar
on not using the phrase human-AI collaboration. It’s a powerful tool not a collaborator. And it’s instead based on lots of underpaid workers - distanced work on other humans effort.

Just tuning in to see
@geri_fitz

@PhilPalanque
is introducing Geri and

who will be running the conversation with her.

Our local college priced Gold Duke of Edinburgh at around ~£1000 all in. Before that Our local school charged £0 for bronze and silver. No one seems bothered about doing gold now 🤣
Really enjoyed the

I’m really looking forward to

with so many people at

Excited for the 2nd

Impressed with the
#chi2019
reviews my student received on her first CHI submission. All less than 3, but she said “Quite liked the reviews considering the scores haha” - I had to read them myself to comprehend such a statement, but they were indeed nice to read.
#thanks
Please do! It’s a great way to recognise excellent reviews, which shows up on people’s PCS reviewing history.
#chi2024
See yours:
Some conferences may rate reviews (inc “not useful”) but for CHI these come up as special recognitions in the history.
Remember (as you naturally vent), for context, last year 2.5 was the mean score, and acceptance rate started at ~3. And 3.5 put you in the top 10%.
#CHI2021
I run a meme-of-the-week open challenge for students to submit a meme that’s relevant to the weeks learning outcomes of my classes. Makes Mondays 5pm classes more fun.
This got submitted this week… 🙃

Submit research papers, or just 1 page bios to take part! The submission form is open until June 30th.
Sad to be losing my best fNIRS-head person 🤣 Horia’s been a super colleague for 10 years (from undergrad through PhD and postdoc) but next week he starts his own well-deserved lectureship!
(This was the least weird picture believe it or not)
458 submission entries have been created so far for
#chi2023
! About 2 weeks before the abstract deadline. Only ~20 have the abstract deadline content complete of course - but its super interesting to see. Will be interesting to see if we get pre-covid growth or covid-shrinkage.
What a flipping fantastic, challenging, emotional, unafraid, bold, and exciting keynote talk from

Interesting anecdotes from

Microsoft has always had a great philosophy around accessibility and introduced me to the idea of temporary disability. It’s a great way to broaden one’s perspective on how much impact making your product more accessible has.

Last week, I contacted over 150 of our new

I was surprised how many specifically mentioned they were grateful, so that made the task much more rewarding 😀
Interesting alt.chi paper on seeing where/how LLMs can do the work of qualitative analysis (eg thematic analysis) - to see what themes and codes it would produce. Largely to see if it can save people some of the 10hrs per 1hr of recordings. By Courtni Byun et al
ok - here we go. Yoshifumi is introducing Cheiko speaking from CMU - "See what I mean, Making Waves for the Blind" - she's starting by talking about how revolutionary technology has been. And now talking about how she became blind at the age of 14.
#chi2021
A perfectly submittable version of our
#chiir2021
short paper has been submitted. ~5 days before the deadline. I... don’t know what to do now. This has never happened to me before.
A huge congratulations to all who submitted full papers for
#CHI2024
. We had 4046 complete submissions, which amounts to 27% growth over 2023 🥳 If you haven't already, and especially if you are an author, please sign up to review in PCS
Super pleased to win a

After a busy 3 weeks of 16hr days dealing with
#chi2024
papers chair stuff and running freshers week, I was knackered and ready for a Sunday night in, on the sofa. But ended up out at a friends house, drinking a few pints of Guinness around a fire, and it was a much better idea.
Off to
#CHI2018
tomorrow. Just doing a small amount (inc my immediate team): a workshop, a symposium, a SIG debate, chairing a session, presenting a
#TOCHI
article, a demo, a LBW presentation, overseeing the running of courses this year, and a planning meeting for
#chi2019
role.
I'm excited by the sheer amount of potential rejection I've set myself up for. Several
#chi2022
decisions due soon, new papers submitted to conferences and journals over dec/jan, and one EPSRC grant proposal just going in. Can't wait.
My main lesson from my multi-train journey from Nottingham to North Germany for
@acm_chi
#chi2023
? Don’t assume any trains to be on time in Germany.
More broadly my ground journey has been fun, “a bit of an adventure”, but only because my plan had major redundancy time in it.
