I am a medical doctor and specialist consultant paediatric psychiatrist. I treat children with mental illness. Opinions are my own.
Joined January 2017
I’m not arguing that there doesn’t need to be multidisciplinary input. Of course treatment needs a host of professionals, mostly non-medical. It’s the method of diagnosing autism without the input of a medical doctor that is the problem as the comorbidity and underlying genetic conditions in some cases are missed. It should ordinarily be a consultant psychiatrist but that needs more consultants and funding.

The WAY we are ‘managing’ children with a potential diagnosis of autism makes no sense. Of all the conditions that should be assessed and treated by medical consultant paediatric / child and adolescents, autism is the most ‘medical’ in terms of its morbidity (other medical illnesses and non medical difficulties.)

Yet our “early intervention services” are essentially non-existent, so children don’t get treated and the cycle continues. The health service executive and the government are using Paediatric hospitals as the only Emergency service for children who have psychiatric illnesses, mental health crises, autism, “behavioural difficulties,” and in most cases those patients who should be in a paediatric psychiatric or mental health facility.

Another general election with the politicians pounding the streets. General Health provision and housing number one. However almost no mention of mental illness or mental health (they are not the same.) 90% of those dying by suicide have a mental illness. The human cost not to mention the increased need for all types of medical care, the greater risk of alcohol and substance misuse, fractured bones, car accidents et cetera along with housing only makes the problems of housing and medical care worse.

@itsthatgirlsuzi @MedCouncilIRL We need to push for fairness for all in the interest of patients. It is long past time for mangers to be regulated like all other health service workers. We all need an external body to regulate our work. This needs to happen.

@CHI_Ireland @cf_ireland @heartchildren_ @Chldns_Hrtbeat @CHFIreland @childreninhosp @CeoHardiman @traceywall001 @nch_info @HSELive Could we hear from patients suffering from psychiatric illness and ‘mental health difficulties’ and their families? Any reason why they are excluded?

@22Q11_Ireland Thank YOU. You have continued to advocate, care for and love your children (even when they are well beyond being children!) That's what parents do. But to do it with such (relative!) equanimity and patience every single nanosecond of the day - No words....

@Sandracmulhall Ah.... That's makes me feel very emotional. Thanks. So many good, caring, genuine people in Wexford You say what you mean and mean what you say. Real people. A privilege to meet and work with. And some craic! Hope you're well. We'll all keep at to get the best for our children.
@drkieranmoore You're greatly missed in Wexford. They can never fill your shoes and I told them that too ... they did not like it either ....
