I’m going to need a bit of time to process what I just played. Lido is like a four hour guitar solo of nonstop head-bashing moments: it’s bold, gets bolder, and somehow, never actually stops. Severe, stunning, tantalizing, engaging, and strategic. A marvel in every sense.
One of those “I can’t believe this happened” days at Cypress Point today with three close friends. A bluebird day to take the maiden voyage around Alister Mackenzie’s Californian classic. Hard not to fall in love here!
I’m lucky enough that I can play just about any yardage (not that I’m particularly long), but there’s something so amazing about a 6,500 yard golf course that you walk off and go “wow, that was 6,500?” Donald Ross was particularly good at this somehow
A breathtaking morning round at Bandon Trails, which has been gaining traction as the best at the resort (at least in my circles). There really isn’t a bad golf hole here, and the walk, starting in the dunes, back into the forest and finishing in the dunes, is among the best.
Seeing a lot of people across the Internet complaining about green speeds in Ontario or thicker rough than usual. Please remember: the Premier gave 36 hours notice to get ready. Turf isn’t an overnight thing, it takes time to have it play perfect. Please give the supers time!
When Gil Hanse’s West Palm Golf Park opens in April, it’ll be a welcomed introduction to the Florida golf scene. Imagine Streamsong Blacks aesthetic, with a little splash of Mackenzie’s heathland trip & some of Hanse’s most thoughtful features. Best public golf course in Florida?
@GeoffShac
@GolfonCBS
@attproam
Not a fan personally because suspense is fun, but I’ll give them credit for attempting something different. Innovation is not without its misses
Not many places I’d rather spend an afternoon at than Toronto Golf Club. It’s sublime in every way, gets better with each play, and the new tee on 18 + more tree removal continues to make this H.S. Colt design a big player. Is there a better presented course in Canada? Not to me.
An absolute beat down day at Bethpage’s famed Black course, an A.W. Tillinghast notably famous for hosting a slew of events. There’s some really good and some really bad here, and it is, for better and/or worse, quintessentially American. Bluebird day capped off with a 2 on 15!
Sedge Valley today. It’s a weird, wacky par 68 from Tom Doak that will open in 2024 as the 5th course at the resort (counting Sandbox). Time to digest and will be writing about it on
@beyondcontour
, including a breakdown of all the Cabot/Bandon/SV courses… ranked.
How can you not be romantic about the North Carolina Sandhills, especially when it’s Donald Ross (and subsequently Kyle Franz)? Mid Pines is genuinely one of the most enjoyable places to play golf I’ve encountered. I’m honestly not sure if you’d tire of playing here!
Copetown Woods has absolutely been killing it in the fight for golf re-opening. While I never really considered going and playing, they now have my business when we finally get to play 🔥
And from the ground, the absolutely stunning
@VGC1893
, which I might argue as Canada’s most beautiful golf course.
@jeff_mingay
& Paul Robertson, superintendent, have this A.V. Macan’s design as the best-presented course in Canada + the best front nine, coast to coast. Stunning!
A wet day in Charleston didn’t stop a round at Yeamans Hall, a very charming and ever playable Seth Raynor design. The greens—shown are Short, Redan, Maiden (with the Dragon’s Teeth), Biarritz—are the star of the show, and a perfect way to end a very awesome 3 weeks in the 🇺🇸
Wha a special morning being first off at California Golf Club of San Fransisco, a Willie Locke, A.V. Macan, Alister Mackenzie and Kyle Phillips joint venture. Bouncy fescue and rowdy contours make for one of the most fun experiences in my travels. Simply among the best!
In the late afternoon, a cheeky loop around Stanley Park Pitch & Putt in downtown Vancouver. This 18 hole short course has holes ranging from 40 yards up to 100, and is a true blast to play. Inner city golf needs more like this gem!
Absolutely floored by the transformation of Southern Pines, which is now my favourite in the region outside of No. 2. Aesthetically, it’s quite sharp, but the strategies to be found are fun, and the green complexes are incredibly varied. A trip to Pinehurst needs to include here!
Four on the ground at Lido, the re-creation of the lost C.B. Macdonald golf course on Long Island. What I like most about it Lido is it’s not straight templates: there’s individuality and honestly, the original holes here are insanely good. The templates are as bold as they come
A very special day today revisiting Sagebrush Golf Club, a Rod Whitman & Richard Zokol collaboration near Kelowna, BC. The best modern course I’ve played in 🇨🇦 has been resurrected from the grave (after being closed for 7 years), and I look forward to the official opening.
What a special day weaving our way around Old Town Club. At my first Perry Maxwell, he took us to school on routing and greens, creating a very exciting golf course that was maybe my favourite of the year. I need to see more Perry Maxwell!!! What a treat.
36 holes at Maidstone: 18 holes in the morning for their “TIPS” (iron man) tournament, followed by alternate shot in the afternoon. This Willie Park Jr. is an immediate favourite. I’d go whale watching any day!
Lido was the obvious star of the show yesterday but in the morning, a rip around David McLay Kidd’s Mammoth Dunes, the 2nd course at Sand Valley. It’s a BIG golf course, and it’s easy to see why resort guests like it. A bit too mindless for my personal tastes, but fun nonetheless
One of our favourite sets of before and after photos. The 6th at
@broadstonegc
in Dorset, England. Restored by our partner
@IVGD1
. The hole's features returned to something much closer to Mr Colt's original design as well as judicious removal of trees to add width, air and light.
One of those days that you can’t believe where you are, or that you’re privileged enough to be able to visit one of the pillar clubs of not only golf in America, but golf course architecture. Took it all in and loved every minute of it. I like Florida now..?
After playing The Muni faster than expected this morning, and knowing I had to go north, I made a stop at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, a Mike Strantz design near Myrtle Beach. It’s a bit more reserved than the other Strantz I’ve seen (TR), which made for a fun day and a great loop
Had a very enjoyable afternoon yesterday playing most of Sedge Valley, the forthcoming Tom Doak design at Sand Valley that will open up sometime in 2024. It’s an unusual golf course in the best way possible, with some weird concepts & a ton of fun to be had. A great addition
A return trip six years after originally seeing Coore & Crenshaw’s Red course revealed I was heavily underrating this golf course! So many cool things to be seen here, and unusually hard for a C&C. The Biarritz is particularly noteworthy, as is the upside down bunkers on the 7th.
Had a fun day at the media day at
@CabotCitrus
, shown here is the Karoo course (Pine Barrens) from
@KyleFranzGolf
. It is maximalist and bold, but many of the best Fazio holes remain in some sort of similar style; an interesting blend. I enjoyed it… it’s big golf!
What a day in Baltimore checking out A.W. Tillinghast’s Five Farms golf course. This is a brawny golf course, yet each hole is so unique and enjoyable. Criminally underrated in the 🇺🇸 in my opinion. A great day with
@mr_hurricane1
!
A wonderful walk around Tom Doak’s 2001 masterpiece, Pacific Dunes. To me, this is the best golf course at the resort without much blunder and a collection of some of the best holes I’ve played. A true instant classic.
Had an absolute heater of a day in Marquette, Michigan with a double header, beginning with
@DeVriesDesigns
’ Greywalls, cut through the Canadian Shield. The par 3, 6th is an all-time par 3 in a fantastic set, and for Canadians, this is basically a much better Muskoka Bay 🔥🔥
A spectacular day checking out Crystal Downs, a bonkers Alister Mackenzie & Perry Maxwell golf course way up in Michigan. The land is rambunctious and aggressive with greens to match. Daring architecture throughout, brilliantly restored by Tom Doak. An instant favourite.
Sheep Ranch is an exceptional addition to the resort. Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw built no sand bunkers, but there is enough interest to keep the golfer engaged. Some of the inland/flatter holes are a bit nondescript at times, but there are so many highlights here.
A little good, a little bad, and a lot of extreme, fun golf at Tobacco Road today. Mike Strantz and his team built a course that remains polarizing. You can debate the architecture merits all you like, but it’s undeniable how much of an artist Mike was.
First of seven courses in Wisconsin this week: Sandbox, a pleasant Bill Coore & Crenshaw par 3 course at Sand Valley Resort. Road, Redan, Maiden, Biarritz, and more are present here, with their own holes as well. It’s a fun play, and one that asks the question: Preserve, or here?
A great way to start the new year with my first visit to the Naples area for Calusa Pines, a 2001 Dr. Michael Hurdzan & Dana Fry creation. It’s an impressive feat to literally rise a golf course out of the flat Florida surrounds, and the golf is good because of their efforts.
Pretty special day at Oakland Hills famed South course, a big, brawny Donald Ross design recently restored by Gil Hanse. It’s the anthesis of Pinehurst No. 2 or Seminole: greens bowl here with knobs, ridges, and natural settings. Tee to green it’s aptly called “The Monster.”
A wonderful introduction to George Thomas’ body of work today at Riviera Country Club, which, in my mind, has one of the strongest sets of two-shots holes I’ve ever seen. The green complexes are rather confounding also, and while being “championship,” still fun to play. A winner!
excellent day at the Golden Gate Park Par 3 course alongside
@LinksNation
+ architect
@jayblasi
, who created an engaging short course in the heart of San Francisco. I wish I had this in my backyard, and more First Tee programs + cities should copy this. Spectacular + more to come
Rolling Green Golf Club, a 1926 William Flynn design outside Philadelphia, is an excellent golf course on a difficult parcel of land, taking advantage of the rather hilly terrain. With upcoming work planned from
@IntegrativeGolf
and
@KeithRhebb
, it’s only going to get better!
Enjoyed getting my teeth kicked in from 7800 yards in 35MPH winds today at Pete Dye’s Ocean Course. Honestly, a lot has been made of the pushed up greens to expose them to the coastal winds, but there was quite a bit of variety in how the greens sat on the landscape. I’m a fan!
To end the trip this afternoon, a “preview play” loop around
@bschneider126
+
@Dundee_Golf
’s Old Barnwell, an exhilarating ride around a spacious property. Among the best greens of any modern golf course, and the array of bunker styles is overwhelmingly awesome. So, so sick
It legitimately doesn’t get better than Jasper Park Lodge, at least in 🇨🇦. Could you imagine this place with a bit of money for some mowing lines & bunker clean up? 🤯🤯 Always special to loop it here, especially a morning round sub-4 hours!
Catching up, Sand Valley from yesterday morning. A beautiful, pleasant walk from Bill Coore & Crenshaw, this is a very easy place to see yourself playing every day. The 2nd is one of C&C’s all-time best holes from what I’ve seen, and the routing is very intimate. Loved!
What a great day today looping around Somerset Hills, a very early Tillinghast west of New York City. Some truly insane greens pairs nicely with two different vibes on each nine. With a Redan & Biarritz, there are clear influences from Tillie’s time in Scotland.
Absolutely blown away today by Kittansett. A brilliant William Flynn & Fredric Hood collaboration in the southeast corner of Massachusetts. A superb set of par 3’s and a design that relies heavy on the ground game, this is a very underrated golf course IMO.
A return trip to Merion’s famed East course was a delight given the first time was in rain & overcast. The best holes here blow anything else out of the water that I’ve played. It’s in the discussion for the quintessential parkland golf course in 🇺🇸, and the routing is bonkers 🔥
Prancing up and down the hills next to Augusta National (with views across to the 18th fairway at times), Augusta Country Club is an enjoyable Donald Ross design. It must be hard to live in the shadow of ANGC, but the golf course has its own identity to stand on. Fun!
Lucky enough to be included in Cabot Citrus Farms tour today, with Mike Nuzzo, Ran Morrissett, Don Mahaffey, and Kyle Franz all on property (and yes, that’s
@adam_stanley
in
#contentmode
with Kyle Franz). Pretty bold vision of a great site. Any signs of Fazio = gone
A very nice morning stroll around Presidio Golf Course in proper San Francisco. I believe credit belongs to Herbert Fowler in 1921, but
@SunyZokolGolf
’s bunkers are appealing here. The routing is a tad jarring working around the hillside, but a superb golf course nonetheless.
Awesome morning at Cascades, a 1923 William Flynn design at The Homestead Resort. Raynor and Tillinghast both turned down this site for various reasons. In particular, its Mountain setting makes this a hilly course + difficult property. Somehow, Flynn always got a creek!
Which of the three is your favourite, courtesy of Donald Ross, Kyle Franz, and the North Carolina Sandhills? Tough decision between Southern Pines, Pine Needles, and Mid Pines… 🤔
A nice day checking out TPC Harding Park, recent host of the 2020 PGA Championship. It’s essentially the perfect tournament golf course, and I’m sure the TOUR boys like it, which means it’s virtually driving range golf and bland greens, but nonetheless an enjoyable loop around.
A great introduction to South Carolina today at Palmetto Golf Club, a very pleasant HC Leeds (Myopia) and Alister Mackenzie design. It is short by todays standard, but the greens are works of art, and it is strategic throughout. A great walk.
Ran into a legend today at the Cabot Citrus Farms media day. Rod Whitman (
@wac_gca
) is helping shape greens on The Roost, which I might go as far to say might be a co-design now alongside Franz, Nuzzo, and Morrissett. Either way, amazing to catch up… off to the Karoo!
A wonderful morning rip around Pinehurst’s No. 2 course, the flagship course at the mega resort, and the finest Donald Ross course I’ve seen (including Seminole). It’s a perfect golf course, with architecture and agronomy firing on all cylinders unlike anywhere else. A Doak 10.
The absolutely sublime Aiken Golf Club was the biggest surprise by far on this trip. Cult courses scare me, but this one lives up to the hype. All the charm & quirk of nearby Palmetto, but open to the public and more in the town. An instant favourite + I will be back
I also don’t think we’re talking enough about how good The Masters social media presence this week was. Whoever they hired is really, really good at what they do
Had a very enjoyable day playing Lake Merced two years and two months after my first visit (almost to the day), which has had significant work from Gil Hanse to bring back Alister Mackenzie’s flavour. It’s a very good golf course now, and the one I’d probably want to join in town
In the age of social media, hidden gems are essentially obsolete. Yet even at the 83rd best golf course, Glens Falls has that “hidden gem” feel, and at the very least, underrated. The front is among the best opening nine’s I’ve played. I could play here every day until I die.
Good luck to my friends on the west coast, as Lake Merced closes for 11 months for a comprehensive restoration from Gil Hanse & the Cavemen. Come October 2022, this will essentially be a new golf course returned to Willie Locke & Alister Mackenzie’s style/OG layout. Exciting!
That’s a wrap from Bandon Dunes! Ended off on Bandon Preserve, a very fun Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw design that has 13 par 3’s. Anything from putter to whatever you hit 160 yards is possible here, and with a wide variety of green complexes, this is a must play ✅
Ooooh
@GolfDigest
“Best New” courses are out:
Public: Lido (Macdonald/Doak)
Private: Ladera (Hanse/Wagner)
Transformation: Lake Merced (Hanse/Wagner)
Renovation: Lookout Mountain (Franz/Rae)
Thoughts?
Lake Merced first 2, Lido second 2. Excited to get to the other two soon
Also great to finally see a Langford & Moreau design, bouncing around the Heritage course at Marquette Golf Club to play the original 9 hole routing. The greens here are INSANE, and you can absolutely see the brilliance. The club is investing into this one… it’ll be sick.
Pretty bummed the R&A put the nail in the coffin for a Turnberry Open in the near future, but at least we still have the Saudi International to look forward to
A shockingly cool day at Whistling Straits namesake Straits course, a 1998 Pete Dye design on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s brutally hard, but I’m shocked at how interesting the golf shots are and how enjoyable I found it. It’s not Kiawah good, but I like it a lot
Growing up in Alberta, I’ve been lucky enough to play Banff Springs, the 1927 Stanley Thompson design that elevated his career to the next level, at least 25 times. Yet, it continues to impress after that many plays. I wish the old routing was in play still, but it’s always 🔥🔥
Nice to see Streamsong’s Blue course six years after seeing the Red. Tom Doak’s first Florida plunge is everything you’d expect from TD, with width, centreline bunkers, and some pretty intense green complexes.
@SirPuttsalot
and his team have Blue playing lovely.
The second leg of the Donald Ross &
@KyleFranzGolf
tour was Pine Needles, which will host the US Women’s Open in June. It’s noticeably beefier than across the road, and a bit more of a No. 2 flair to the greens, yet still enjoyable. I prefer Mid Pines; but Needles is also great.
Enjoyed my first time at Pebble Beach, a 1919 Jack Neville/Douglas Grant design with renovations from Dr. Mackenzie, Herbert Fowler, and Jack Nicklaus, among others. It’s an insane ride tee-to-green with some really horrendous green complexes, but overall really fun. I like it!
Back at
@CabotCitrus
this week. Here’s four from
@KyleFranzGolf
’ Barrens, the overhaul of the highly regarded Pine Barrens from Tom Fazio. The 3rd (1st photo) is a whopping 240 yard par 3. Photos 2 & 3 show the 8th & 14th (similar to original), photo 4 is the new 3 fairway 18th.
Random thought: what’s the single best hole in Canada 🇨🇦? My vote is the 7th at Victoria: strategic tee shot tumbling down the peninsula with the ocean left, insane green. Some contenders IMO:
-Banff, hole 4
-Jasper, hole 9
-Cliffs, hole 2
-Greywolf, hole 6
-St. G’s, hole 2
A good day checking out “Project X” aka the 10th course at Pinehurst Resort. This Tom Doak design feels like an amalgamation of the surrounding area courses: I see elements of Pine Needles, No. 2, Tobacco Road, but of course with TDs individual flair. Nice to meet
@mosergolf
too!
So good to finally get to play all 18 holes at the newly
@wac_gca
renovated Brantford G&CC, which has transformed this old Nicol Thompson + Robbie Robinson design into a real hitter. My favourites are the 2nd-4th, 7th, 10th, 13th. It’s a real hitter, and ranks high for me (👀)
