I recently interviewed at Eight Sleep and it was the most demanding take home I've ever had. Their brief: "Create an in-app experience for a new product, integrating the existing app and flagship product." Even linked their design system and font family to use.

Originally, I didn't reveal their name until I discovered they were INTENTIONALLY doing this to others. Given these times with 1000s of people applying for any opening, and how much unpaid work could be sourced, I reveal them to warn others. We stand together!.

On top of this, you were required to put together a one-hour Zoom presentation, separate from the onsite interview. The compensation for any of this? None. 🚫.

After I posted this on Linkedin, multiple candidates reached out to me that (including a previous coworker) that they had this EXACT same experience, step by step. They were led on about the interview process, then steps were added, and then blindsided with this take home.

As I passed rounds, they added more interviews with no real explanation. The 4-step process progressed into a 7-step process, 8 if you count completing the take home challenge. They also required each interview to be scheduled on a separate day.

In the first call, the recruiter told me it was a 4-step interview process, with a take home that was “a few hours for wireframes.” I’m usually extremely hesitant to accept ANY take home, but they made it sound reasonable.

And that's only from candidates who have seen my post. Imagine how many more there actually are. The fact this EXACT misleading process was used on others makes me doubt it's a "mistake" @eightsleep. It's 2024 and we are holding companies accountable, even in this economy.

Aside from designers being led on with this exact process, now I have engineers saying they ALSO went through this. Example brief: "Make a react native app and come up with new feature, then present to panel." They would get to the end then be told the role "pivoted.".

@sweatystartup After years of following, I’m extremely disappointed to see this kind of post. All of us know men hold vast majority wealth & equity in a patriarchal system. For a woman to keep and honor her family name, what is offensive abt this?. We all know what the insinuated message was.

1) Did you know that the greatest indicator of success is access to capital?. Yes tech twitter loves to talk about grit, character, etc. to justify how special founders are. but underrepresented people, if given the chance, work just as hard if not more.

Their #designchallenge with brand guidelines: design their core experience (3+ features) & marketing. They were "looking" for candidates on #angellist for months, during the pandemic. And that's on #designcommunity being taken advantage of.

Design interviews are so subjective sometimes. one manager will place you as a senior yet another one will tell you to work on your basics. I thought the work would speak for itself, but turns out they speaks differently to different people. #productdesign #ux #truestory.

@CowvinZheng 3) To reiterate: I make ~$110 per hour or less (after SF tax and transaction fees). I also live in SF. I personally still pay for mentorship to this day, and it's significantly more than what I've earned. Again, I appreciate your feedback and hope this clarifies things.
