Good news - Dominic Cummings to leave No 10 by Christmas. He should have been sacked after the ridiculous explanation he gave for his trip to Barnard Castle - taking his wife and child on a roughly 40 mile round trip in order to test his eyesight for a longer drive.

Just noticed Billy No Mates at Haydock (3.50). A friend used to say “I’m Billy No Mates”. She was troubled and died tragically last year. No one should be without friends. They are the most important thing in life.

One of the stars of the just retired Eric Alston's stable, Tedburrow, is still with Eric. The winner of 21 races from 92 starts between 1994 and 2004, including three G3s and five Listed races, Tedburrow is now 30. Wonderful.

A lovely feature in today’s Racing Post about Saeed Bin Suroor. When he first arrived from Dubai he didn’t always receive kindness but he is one of the nicest people in racing and has endured.

Today it is 4 months since I was due to have a hip replaced. It has deteriorated considerably. The hospital still hasn't restarted elective surgery and doesn't know when it will. There must be thousands of people in similar situations.

From Tuesday face masks will be mandatory - a legal requirement - in shops. The Co-op says "It's not our place to enforce face coverings or to refuse to serve a customer who chooses not to wear one." That is staggeringly irresponsible.

Mrs Merton debuts 1.30 Goodwood. Creator, writer, actress Caroline Aherne was so talented, wonderfully funny but had a troubled life - depression, booze and not one cancer but three. She died 2016 aged 52. Hope horse is good.

On Radio 4’s Today programme Grant Shapps relentlessly avoided answering whether or not the government believed it was possible for over 1 million people to move from north to south Gaza in 24 hours. This shameless evasiveness contributes to alienation from politicians.

The government's incompetence is bad enough but ministers' self-interested reactions to situations that cry out for honesty, decency and principled behaviour is equally depressing.
