What “freedoms are being traded” exactly?
China is not a draconian country to live & work in.
The fact is that China is both harmonious & prosperous, but the Chinese did not have to “give up their freedoms” for any of this.
Harmony & prosperity is what almost all Chinese want.
If the government shows it has your interests at heart, many are happy to trade freedoms for it.
The state can earn immense goodwill so long as people believe it is working to make life better for them.
In a society long used to suffering, change is good.

This is not all Russian government foreign money reserves. A lot of these funds is private money belonging to Russian citizens.
If the western governments steal this money, gone is the U.S. dollar remaining, as the world reserve currency for international trade.
