I was told by a PhD thesis committee member that if I returned to Mexico after a postdoc I would "fade into mediocrity". However, I did return to my home country, started my own lab, and are now well funded to investigate the genetics and genomics of cancer in Mexican patients.
I just got an email from someone in the US asking me for advice on how to obtain samples from Latin American countries without having to recognise sample providers w/ authorship in the resulting paper. Needless to say I was furious. Friends, please don't do this

Excited to have official confirmation from
@wellcometrust
of our Career Development Award! This will support our lab's work on somatic genomics in Latin America for the next 8 years. It was intimidating defending our project at the Trust's offices in London but so worth it! 🥳
Thank you

This is just one of a series of pieces that Andrew has done on scientists from the Global South! Go check his page for more 😄 and thank you for highlighting work done in Latin America!

I am so happy this is out now! In this piece, I tell my experience moving to Mexico from the UK five years ago, write about fears and hopes I had back then, and the responsibilities I took over when I moved back home.

So many "international" symposiums completely ignore scientists in Latin America, Asia & Africa. Sometimes even Australia. What they really mean is "US and Europe". Please do better. The rest of the world does science too; research may be different in scope because of priorities.
Desactivaron los comentarios en el último (que yo sepa) video de la Dra. Karina Acevedo Whitehouse, pero quizá es porque el comentario que les puse era el que tenía más likes y aparecía hasta arriba 😌 (al menos la última vez que revisé)

I just resigned from three service roles (both within and outside my institution). Two of these I did for years, one for a few months. When I realised I didn't get to my students' manuscripts for weeks, I realised this workload was unsustainable for me. Mental health goes first!
Yay! Super thankful to

A year ago we were sent home & our lab had to stop all experiments. Today, we have not returned to work & most people here (incl. medical doctors) have not been vaccinated. It's great to see posts about life returning to normal, but please remember it's not the case for everyone.
It's been very difficult to obtain samples for our studies given the pandemic, the rarity of acral

Thanks for your perspective, I appreciate it and respect it. However I really hope you don't "encourage" your students and postdocs to have kids. It is a deeply personal decision and those of us who may not want to have them are already fighting with a society that expects us to.

I'm curious: what's the most confusing (potentially catastrophic!) translation you've encountered between English words and another language?
For me, I think it's been the definition of a 'billion'. In English: 10^9, but in Spanish, 'billón' is 10^12!

Whether there is a superior race is a scientific question and can only be answered by highly qualified geneticists after a thorough scientific investigation. For lay people to have a no answer to such a question prior to investigation is bizarre, non-scientific, and pure politics
