This remarkable individual retained so much detailed knowledge at the tip of his tongue, I was in awe of him. He relentlessly sought to expose the reality & savagery of war:
"If you saw what I saw, you'd never support a war again". RIP Robert Fisk.
So sorry to hear of the sudden loss of Robert Fisk, a brilliant journalist & author of immense intellect. Appearing at the first
@dalkeybookfest
, he became a staple when he was “home”. Always generous with his time & insights, he will be missed.
March 2020 was quite a month, not only globally, but locally… as it was when actor
#MattDamon
arrived in Dalkey. This year Matt will join our line-up of guests + talk to
@davidmcw
about lockdown in fairy-tale Dalkey, and his love of Ireland.

We are also delighted to announce that Bono is coming back to Dalkey Book Festival for an evening with Fintan O’Toole ✨

Facts & home truths by Ivan Rogers: “No deal is not so much about taking back control as forfeiting control completely”. After no deal ”red lines will fade to pale pink” . A must read -full of facts about trade deals & geopolitical implications of no deal
@mrjamesob
@davidmcw
The central problem with ‘no deal’ is that it is being heavily (mis)sold as providing certainty, finality – a ‘clean break’ – when it would manifestly do nothing of the sort, says Ivan Rogers
“Ireland spent months discussing pubs but not arts venues.”
“The arts are seen in Ireland as a luxury,” whereas in Germany they’re seen as a necessity.”

So close and so far from sectarian violence. Mixed emotions today visiting my mother in the house where I grew up in Belfast - but the overall feeling is just sadness.
The man can write !
Just finished reading

Inventive, funny, moving, raw .
A love letter to music,the band & Ali, Bono’s writing is extraordinarily good . But then we knew that.

20 years ago at daybreak ☀️this little ✨ray of light was born. She has been shining brightly, singing and making her parents laugh for most of the 20 years. Happy lockdown birthday Lucy!
Great news for Irish writers. A €30,000 award. The shortlist for the new

announced here . Winners revealed 20th June. We are not going to let this virus beat us. Creativity never stops! We will be back next year stronger than ever.
We are back! This year Dalkey Book Festival is coming to you in a slightly different format but by no means lacking in the global talent, the community feel and the good fun for which the festival is known. More info here:
When I moved to ROI, I couldn’t get over the nationwide & media obsession about The Leaving. I’m still uneasy hearing parents say “we have a leaving cert in the house”. The learning by rote system surely turns most children against “education”?
People have asked me in the lock down have I "Leaving Cert" in the house. No I don't. I've a funny, gregarious young lad who happens to have some exam in the summer but who is (with all his mates) so much more than a points machine! Stop this nonsense, it's driving the kids mad.
David & Sian welcome Matt Damon back (virtually) to Dalkey for
