It's not just about outfits. Mannerisms matter, too. May being a somewhat tough girl makes her a tomboy (ボクっ娘), Bridget being a fairly feminine boy makes him a femboy(男の娘).
These terms aren't actual direct translations, but they have the same connotation.

For Faust, they had to retcon his goofy behavior which only JP people understood. For Bridget, they had to, well, retcon his identity, since 男の娘 is a JP thing. Of course, "femboys" exist, but that's a porn term, something that companies don't want to be associated with.

This isn't an uncommon opinion in Japan. Most will admit that Bridget only had to be "officially" changed due to foreigner pressure, and that it isn't really part of his story to become a woman. If you look at any japanese social media, they'll call him 男の娘.

The writer, having never been responsible for Bridget's story before, probably didn't fully grasp it, or didn't really care about it. Either way, it was super easy to write some of dialogue where Bridget comes out as a woman despite never wanting to previously be considered one.
