My contract at work wasn't renewed (not a big deal).
Consistently, I put myself, my studies, my health, my girlfriend and family above work. This led to an implied unprofessional behaviour.
And I wouldn't change anything. Because low paid labour is not my priority - my life is.
At our age, my parents already had me and Laura's parents had 2 kids, with Laura on the way.
They had a house, paid for with a single job, on a half acre of land.
Compared to us who have no house, can't get a mortgage, have no space - how could we even think of having kids?
"Walk in the daylight."
"Walk on a popular route."
"Don't go out alone at dark."
Women cannot even walk in the day time without being killed.
Appalled regarding what's happened in Tullamore.
Men need to stop killing women.
Since I moved to Galway in 2016, I've spent over €22,000 on rent.
And I have absolutely nothing to show for it, apart from a few residential references.
What sort of future is there for young people in Ireland?

To everyone going back to nightclubs tonight:
Don't spike anyone's drink
Going home with someone doesn't imply consent
Don't target someone singled out from their friend group
Don't sexually assault anyone
The idea thrown around of forcing nurses and teachers etc to stay in Ireland for a designated time following their qualification is genuinely bananas
Does it not make a lot more sense to improve the working conditions, pay, staffing, and more, than to institute serfdom?
I just can't get behind the 6am closing time for nightclubs when staff are paid terribly, they struggle to get their breaks, and younger workers are paid less for the same work.
Night-workers rights need a serious improvement. I've done nights and it's dreadful for you.
Flying back and forth between London and Dublin once a week for a year will lead to more emissions than the average person in Ireland will emit in a year
Bonkers in a climate emergency
I just made an active rescue in the Corrib in Galway.
I'm ok but, most importantly, the person I rescued is getting the care they need.
Will prob need a check up myself now but we're both ok.
My heart breaks for the people who need their cars to get to work, school, hospital because they have no other options.
My heart breaks for the people having to weigh up buying fuel or groceries, or if they have an unexpected bill.
The average house price in 1998 was €182,000 - it's now €308,500
Tuition fees for third-level were <€500 - they're now over €3000
There were 2,500 homeless people - now just under 12,000
A litre of diesel was €0.94
(All € figures adjusted for inflation)
Galway won the Sam Maguire, Westlife was formed, TV3 launched, and B*Witched’s C'est La Vie was all over our radios.
That’s the last time unemployment was as low as it is now.
Average Galway rent in 2014: €828
Average Galway rent in 2021:
€1475
% Increase: ~75% increase
Minimum wage in 2014: €8.65
Minimum wage in 2021: €10.20
% Increase: ~18% increase
Neoliberalism is killing us.
SuperMacs owner Pat McDonagh on
@SaturdayRTE
talking about the cost of living
Interesting to note that SuperMacs
- Pays workers minimum wage (younger workers do the same work)
- Charges workers for their uniform
- Charges workers for food, even if not consumed during their shift
"If I was a first time buyer now, in my 20s or 30s, thinking about buying my first home, I'd be very worried about a change of government"
Would-be first time buyer here, saving for a mortgage, in my 20s: I don't think there's anything I revel more than a change of government
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he believes that the housing crisis is on the "cusp of changing" with house prices starting to level off or fall |
The Leaving Cert is incredibly outdated
Throughout my masters, if I don't know something I
Ask someone down the hall, head to the library, google it, etc
The concept of having to remember everything is old-fashioned.
We have an opportunity to change, why not use it?
Just to make abundantly clear, Mattie McGrath is an awful TD and a poor representative for Ireland. He is anti-choice, anti equal marriage rights, facilitates the alt-right, and compared the Covid cert to 1930-40s Germany. He is not a good person.

Unfortunately we've gotten to a position whereby to save our planet, it's animals and biodiversity, plants species and the most disadvantaged people, we're going to have to make sacrifices like that.
Students aren't choosing drink over food.
They're struggling to afford the essentials after rent. After college fees. After books they need. After bus and train tickets.
So many are struggling. Why not ask what you can do to help instead of posturing or passing judgement online?
Honoured doesn't begin to describe how I feel after being elected

Thanks to all the rebels who stood by me through thick and thin, especially the Midlands Mafia and the other Big Man Creno!
Mup d'irregulars agus Fianna Fáil abú!
NATO have a 2% GDP target of defence spending (that's a misnomer anyways)
In Ireland that would be over 8 billion euro.
That's almost 3 times what we spend on housing.
Almost 3 times what we spend on transport.
Around 6 times what we spend on foreign aid.
Gardaí facilitating the eviction even though tenant has confirmation from RTB and Treshold that this is an illegal eviction and landlords men were violent towards tenant.
There's a place for rent in Galway City for €1700 a month
Single bedroom flat
That same flat is on AirBnB for €100 per night, meaning €3,000 a month for the landlord
This is a person directly profiteering off the housing crisis
I work with dozens of teachers each week and not one of them has voiced their concerns that they're "walking on eggshells"
Their concerns are children coming to school hungry, overcrowded classrooms, not being paid enough to continue living in Ireland
Before you demand people conserve water at home, why not
- Fix the leaks of over 1/3 of our water supply,
- Stop building data centers which use as much water as small towns,
- Make efforts to prevent effluent run-off and eutrophication of our rivers and lakes?
Very disappointed at the footage/audio from GMIT this evening.
Maybe that person does have a speech impediment. Maybe they have anxiety. Maybe they want to be very sure of how the come across. I see no issue with talking slowly.
Remember Joan Burton and the Labour Party took medical cards away from disabled people?
And tried to push through water charges?
And property tax?
Trust me, the working class does.
#ReelingInTheYears
Looks like I'll be on Liveline to discuss NUIG and exams later on.
They have blatantly lied to students and jeopardised not only their health and welfare, but their families too.
All I wanted to do was set up an An Post Current account...
That is my name!
Why do so many (Irish) companies not recognise fadas?
Disappointed in
@Postvox
In a masterstroke from NUI Galway, and as a showcase of how terrible the housing situation is, the university is now recommending students live in Tuam, Spiddal, Oughterard, & Moycullen
Moycullen perfect for students without cars, only a 2 hour and 15 min walk or 40 minute cycle
NUI Galway has emailed students today to confirm that next academic year they will return to fully in-person teaching.
Removing accessibility options for students is ableist.
Removing teaching recording is ableist.
Not instituting transcriptions for lectures is ableist.
I would love if NUI Galway could tell me
- The students timetables I'm tutoring
- What days, dates, and times I'm expected to be available for teaching
- Why I'm not being paid for this work
Trinity College Dublin could raise over €3.5 million in much needed funds by capping salaries to €150,000.
If the college cannot survive on Government finding alone, why do those running the place merit an extraordinary wage package?
There is nothing scientific about this.
This is purely based on maintaining the economic system that puts workers at risk, fails to provide them sick pay, and fails if there isn't incessant growth.
The Government will consider reducing the self-isolation period from 10 to five days for some who test positive for Covid-19, according to the Green Party leader
SUSI discourse?
Education should be free for all.
As it isn't, SUSI should be fit for purpose. It isn't.
Even families on 60+k are now finding it difficult to send children to university.
The binary increments of SUSI support mean people cannot work to support themselves
If NUI Galway are going to take disciplinary issues over memes, I'm sincerely hoping the action they take over inappropriate behaviour, abuse and coercion etc is much more swift and severe.
Just got word our RTB case was successful and we will be receiving damages from our landlord
With that said, it has taken 221 days from initial complaint to landlord to now
This is far, far too long for families who are struggling to make ends meet
An outright lie. Only antigen tests available to students for months were the ones through ProjectUniCov.
Students in NUI Galway were only provided 5 antigen tests each in the last week of exams.
The government have completely failed students.
There has been so much debate, discussion etc about antigen testing. We have been using them in third level education now for many months. What is absolutely clear is that this Christmas there are people who may have been infectious & would not have know it had they not used them
No mandatory sick pay.
Workers struggling to get PCR tests.
Discussions of lowering the quarantine period.
CMO still not mentioning ventilation as a preventative measure.
The government needs you to be at work for things to keep operating. That's how broken the system is.
The absolute gall of Simon Harris and James Geoghegan to pose, while out canvassing for DBS, with a homeless person in the background.
If that's not the most accurate illustration of
@FineGael
's leadership the last number of years, I don't know what else is.
Sorry I'm salty that
Medical cards were stripped from people in need
3rd Level costs skyrocketed even when assurances were made they wouldn't
Pushed through water charges
Brought in property taxes
People lost their jobs and homes due to actions the party of workers
There's around 1,000 PhDs in University of Galway
To increase their stipends to a living wage of €28,000 as the
@PhdsPcau
is calling for, it would cost less than €10 million
The university had over €24 million in surplus last year
The money is there, it needs to be shared
Direct provision isn't being abolished
Data centres are sponging our energy supply
We're establishing new fossil fuel infrastructure in Ireland
Private vehicles continue to dominate our towns and cities
Remind me why the Green Party exist and why they agreed to the Prog for Gov?
I've given NUI Galway over €15,000 since 2016.
About to creep over €22,000 in a couple weeks.
The least I could ask for is an in-person graduation when suitable.
Delighted to say I've been elected to the Academic Council of NUI Galway.
I'll be representing the College of Science and Engineering, as well as students welfare generally.
Safe to say, NUIG have a new thorn in their side.
Galway City recently got an air quality sensor in Eyre Square and the news is bad
In January, 22/26 days monitored exceeded WHO safe NO2 levels of 25μg/m^3
In February and March it was 20/28 and 30/31...
The means were 43.18, 31.92, and 52.93 respectively
Galway is being poisoned
Having worked for crappy shops and retailers - if the workers till is short, they will dock it from your wages.
A euro over an 8 hour shift might happen occasionally.
To be down €16 would probably be investigated.
If you get too much change, give it back.
Spare a thought for all
@nuigalway
students and the invigilators working in what are completely appalling conditions for exams.
Coupled with the dreadful deferral process, this is a recipe for disaster.

If you never offered sympathy to George Nkencho and his family because he was a "thug" but you're very quick to offer it up to Prince Philip and co even though he was a known racist, your morals are all over the shop.
Some personal news, unfortunately I'm moving out of Galway City in a few weeks
I'd love to stay here but unfortunately the cost of rent is just too high to be able to save and plan for the future
I'm genuinely looking forward to moving out the country and slowing down a bit 1/3
Cars are terrible. They're genuinely one of the worst things we've done to out planet.
However, solving climate change must incorporate social justice.
We can't get rid of cars wholly until we have a comprehensive, free, public transport system among other things.
I am actually losing my mind, it has been almost 6 months since I informed our "landlords" (vulture fund Comers) that our windows needed fairly urgent repairs
Now the door is beginning to have issues, introducing a hazard on top of a major inconvenience
@Catu_Galway
@CatuIreland
Yes, I am extremely disappointed at what went on at Spanish Arch last night.
However, a lot of this could have been avoided if the government and universities had worked much quicker to tell students that accommodation would not be required for the time being.
#spanisharch
NUIG students remember this?
Well, after a 2+ month wait, I finally got an FOI request back from NUI Galway, and guess what?
CO2 was only monitored in the Kingfisher Hall.
Even in the kindest interpretation of the email here, NUIG lied to its students and its invigilators.
As someone who has worked since they were 15, this bill is absolutely welcome.
Everyone, regardless of age, deserves to be adequately paid for their work.
Today I launched
@pb4p
bill to remove discrimination against 16-20-year-olds who do not earn the same rate of the minimum wage as those older than them.
No worker should be paid less than the minimum wage. We need to end the discrimination, and raise the minimum wage to €15/hr.
“If every individual can just do that little bit more, over the next few weeks, we will stop another wave..." Seems like even more of a kick in teeth now, doesn't it?
I don't know why people have such a hard time believing our health service would discharge someone in a mental health crisis.
Just this summer,
A man was discharged from hospital.
He jumped in the Corrib River minutes later.
I rescued him.
This is not a once off situation.
NUI Galway are either going to recklessly allow hundreds of students to travel and congregate together for exams, or, cancel them at the very last minute leaving people in a rush to find quiet, safe spaces to sit exams with suitable wifi and device access.
Solidarity with
@tcdsu
who are protesting consistent unaffordable rent increases during a cost of living crisis.
The book of Kell's brings in around €20,000 a day on average - I look forward to Trinity getting none of that today
We've blockaded the Book of Kells
@tcddublin
and will be here until 5pm in response to Trinity's unaffordable rents and constant rent increases. Come out to support!
Fix the leaks that account for the loss of 43% of drinking across Ireland
Appropriately charge/tax data centers that use as much water as small towns.
Your lack of investment and infrastructure wastes more water than any family in Ireland possibly could.
I'm thinking of putting together a report on NUI Galway exams safety, or lack thereof.
Would appreciate any and all testimonials/opinions via DMs.
Everything will be kept anonymous obviously.
RTs appreciated
When I started working at 16, I was paid €6.06 an hour whilst my colleagues were paid €8.65 for the exact same work
Young people should be paid the same for doing the same work. Everyone working deserves a living wage.
Tomorrow, People Before Profit launches a bill to end wage discrimination against young workers under 20.
🚫 The Minimum Wage (Equal Pay for Young Workers) Bill 2022 would end minimum wage pay discrimination for workers under the age of 20.
