Sir you are the Hungarian ambassador to the Vatican why are you talking like you play paradox games.
Forget Greenland and Canada - I am thinking since days how history could have gone if the princes of tiny š±š® Liechtenstein had bought Alaska from the Russian Czar when he offered it to them.

@davidrkadler They claim that its ok because on the back they specify that this wont affect "legal immigrants" but given the fact that they use the Identarian code word "remigration" on the front of the ticket, its literally this meme but for nazism.

There were exactly zero dsa members on the committee that voted to ban TikTok. For as much as these people love to talk about the threat of disinformation, they love posting it themselves.
Fun fact: After viewing classified material about the CCP's influence on TikTok, the bill to ban TikTok passed committee with a 50-0 vote. Fifty to zero, MAGA + centrists + DSA members were unanimous. All the accounts bemoaning this seem totally incurious why that might be.

One of the funniest results of centrist negative polarization against progressives is that they disbelieve the mere idea that a progressive could have an honestly held opinion with a basis in reality. Everything is an evil plot to undermine democracy, even trains.
How much train discourse comes from the belief all trains are the first class cars on the Orient Express.

@ShadowyZephyr @MrUnfamilar @DreamLeaf5 So, youre fine with them being exploited as long as they are on a visa then?. How about we grant them broad labor market protections akin to citizens as soon as they enter the country instead of creating a two tier labor market?.

@ShadowyZephyr @MrUnfamilar @DreamLeaf5 Ok, but what happens in that period before the person has a green card?. Yes, H1B can transfer employers, but it is more difficult, and importantly, the timing makes it nearly impossible. Which gives space for labor exploitation since they can hold the legal status against you.

Honestly at this point its hard to not call this outright antisemitism. No, Bernie Sanders did not have some secret plan to undermine the Democratic Party and thus American democracy. He is thing this called a "leftist" who "believes in things".
Bernieās not stupid; he knew M4A would never pass. It was a bad thing to polarize a ton of left wing people against the Democratic Party by promising them something unrealistic.

I donāt think lowering taxes is a good explanation for āusual billionairesā either. The rich are motivated by the exercise of power, and get incredibly mad when that is limited. I would bet you a lot of billionaires would trade higher taxes for being able to beat their staff.
For the millionth time āliberal journalists were too mean to billionairesā is probably one of the most important motivations for the Tech Right. The usual billionaires want tax cuts motivation is convenient but fundamentally wrong.

Every political organization is predominantly middle class and white. Like, literally just spend 5 minutes interacting with your average democratic campaign. The DSA, however, is closer to the mean population of the left in the United States than most other political orgs.
I need desperately need Social Democrats to internalized two things. 1. DSA is not the multi racial working class, it is a prominently white middle class organization and there has been little meaningful reflection on how to change that let alone attempts.

@ShadowyZephyr @MrUnfamilar @DreamLeaf5 Essentially the only reason it is not exploited more is that there is a statutory cap on visas, and thus its a literal lottery if you can find a replacement easily. But if that cap is removed? Work 80 hour weeks or I fire you and bring in somebody new.

Idk the teacher shortage probably has a lot more to do with the increasingly shit pay while the benefits, such as pensions, are being destroyed. Legitimately this argument is indistinguishable from a conservative one.
It's actually really alarming that a generation has no personality outside what an algorithm feeds them. We're facing a teacher shortage crisis because kids have become feral illiterates.

@ArchysLife Iāve been on this for a while, but specifically inflation that is bought monthly or less (which in the United States is gas, rent, food) is way more psychologically impactful than say, car inflation, even if the latter might have a greater effect on your pocketbook.

The thing that has made Bernie popular is consistency of political positions despite the mood of the public. Saying āyeah a lottery system for visas bad, and we need to make sure that we eliminate guest worker programs and move towards an equal playing field is classic Bernie!ā.
Between opposing the H1B program, expressing openness to RFK Jr.'s confirmation, forcefully backing Biden's re-election after the debate, and underperforming Harris because he ran for re-election aged 83, it's not really been a banner 6 months for Bernie Sanders.

Considering you refer to the āpopulationā and not a specific political organization, yes that is genocidal to withhold aid from an entire population.

IMO, the fact that the US had a relatively competitive election all things considered, and not a Reagan style blowout, tells me that if Trump had won re-election in 2020, we would be looking at the first double digit popular vote victory since 1984 and a map like this.

Look, they basically tried to force somebody to sell their house using eminent domain. Except it turns out they have no legal authority to force them to sell. Why would basically any company sell their most profitable venture at cut throat prices?.
I think itās pretty clear a lot of Washington expected ByteDance to divest from TikTok and that the app would never *actually* be banned. Ironically the fact this didnāt happen probably proves those same lawmakers prescient in their concerns.

It would be fascinating to study from the angle of linguistics, how these people went from refusing to use the ceasefire in September to November 2023 since it implied the fighting would totally end, to now claiming that a ceasefire means the end of all issues when it doesnāt.
The fact that my classmates at Columbia University are protesting for Palestine DURING A CEASEFIRE tells you everything you need to know.

What's really bizarre is that so many leftists on here actually cheered on the collapse of liberalism because they had some insane fantasy belief about socialism rising from the ashes. Of course right-wing authoritarianism was going to come afterwards!.

I mean at this point its pretty clear that the strategy was never to "defeat Hamas" it is to kill as many civilians as possible as part of a genocide.
I have been teaching strategy to militaries for 15 years, and this is what strategic failure looks like . After 15 months and <50,000 civilians deaths, Hamas is still firing rockets and attacking the IDF's rear, the hostages are still not home and Israel is politically isolated.

I really cannot emphasize enough that if you think there was a groundswell of people who suddenly sided with bin Laden, youāre as gullible as the half dozen of people who decided to become pro bin Laden.
I had no problem with TikTok until that random Sunday when all the kids suddenly decided that Bin Laden was actually cool and good. Do they expect us to believe this was a completely organic thing with no one behind the scenes pushing it??.

Yes young people donāt want to live in small towns because they have been hollowed out institutionally in terms of cultural and entertainment venues. I disagree with Kate a fair amount but youāre literally just doing this.

The fundamental bargain in western democracies has been āyou protect me from some market forces and I lend legitimacy to your political systemā . The problem is that under neoliberalism, the logic has been to protect the market from consumer demands, not citizens from markets.
I don't think Dems appreciate that no matter how many jobs are created, Americans live under a general experience of being constantly fleeced at every turn (by landlords, banks, grocery stores, insurance companies, etc etc) & this significantly impacts perceptions of the economy.

Yes, some ānewsroomsā did this thing called āinvestigative reportingā and didnāt just uncritically republish press releases like they used to. If that is the level of fealty that was being demanded by tech oligarchs the equilibrium was never going to last.
Years ago, some newsrooms and liberal circles decided to be antagonistic towards tech, as @mattyglesias wrote. The reality we have today is a mix of things, including a heavy dose of opportunism, but that decision had consequences too.

If those 29% had actually stuck with Harris, we would be talking about a President Harris right now. Granted a 270-268 win with PA decided in the courts, but a win. Beyond that, do you know how unprecedented that a double digit number of Americans care about foreign policy?.
@EricLevitz Part of the problem is an epidemic of dishonest push polls that are massaged until they get the desired result. This isnāt even a particularly good one, since it shows that 71% of Biden 2020 voters/2024 nonvoters prioritized an issue other than Gaza.

@LittleMammith @Tyler_A_Harper Yes, itās clear he does want it restricted, because thatās how the fucking visa works! Itās not supposed to be for jobs without a skills shortage. He claims that the tests there are not working properly. If youāre arguing to decap H1B visas, then fucking argue that!.

That may have been its (very marginal) real world impact, but Stancil legitimately believes and insists that the entire reason why Harris was media distortion, rather than a secular worldwide phenomena of backlash to inflation.
People misrepresent Stancil's war on distorted reporting on the economy as an unofficial campaign strategy rather than a (rather effective) pressure campaign essentially entirely out of the general public's sight. He was right to wage it!.

You can really tell that centrist are shadow boxing here because Bernie literally argues in the statement that it should be easier for H1B holders to switch jobs, which is literally the thing that makes it hard for them to stay!
@Tyler_A_Harper But that's not what Bernie is saying, right? He's talking about foreign workers coming in and driving out American workers while pushing down wages - am I supposed to think his proposed solution to that is making it even easier for them to stay in the country and "steal jobs?".

The H1B visa system as it exists right now is relatively non exploitative because the system is so broken. The lottery system makes it hard to hire and fire people on a whim. But if Elon succeeds at removing the cap, its on paper design is so ripe for exploitation its not funny.
I was on an H-1B visa for 8.5 years before I got my green card, and never once did I think I was exploited. I also changed jobs twice, so I wasn't an indentured servant. Stay in your lane; I don't need your paternalistic concern of trying to "protect" me from evil corporations.

The problem with Fetterman isnāt his ideology, that would be acceptable if he had come out of an Alaska, Ohio, Florida, Iowa, etc. The problem is he is acting like this in PA, which isnāt a red state. You need party discipline in swing seats for the Dems to be effective.
Widely adopting Fetterman's. unorthodoxy will be an extremely traumatic process that can cause ruptures in the party, like Trump 2016. But a lot of his appeal lies in his willingness to basically say anything and buck the party on a few key issues. Worth it? You decide.

That would open up those companies to massive legal liability, because ānot enforcingā something doesnāt mean they cannot be sued later. Biden could have requested the 90 day extension. He didnāt.
I love how the community note ignored the fact that Biden has already said he will not enforce the ban and cannot reasonably enforce these penalties in the less than 36 hours left of his administration. You canāt really contest the reason why TikTok didnāt even *try* to keep.

This is perfectly rational behavior for a company who thinks . 1. Their platform is valuable.2. Their platform still has room to grow. This shit is qanon level conspiracism come the fuck on. Do people think Chinese companies donāt operate under a capitalist model?.
TikTok would literally rather shut itself off from its largest market, than divest its ownership from the CCP. To put it bluntly, these are not the actions of a rational corporation. They're giving the entire game away on who REALLY calls the shots.

Are people fucking illiterate? The poll is 49% too far, 28% reasonable balance, 21% not far enough. But liberals are backing up the insane framing that itās 77% against despite that literally not what the poll says. Some of the issues need work but the overall picture is mixed!.
I'm very tired of seeing progressives trash sensible center-left liberalism as a dead end just because Harris lost by a few points, while they do absolutely zero self-reflection on the fact that their own positions are 80/20 unpopular after years of activism *they directed.*.
