That’s why there was little inflation. It barely changed anything and he bailed out the working class manufacturers it hurt. This is easy when it’s small and symbolic. If it’s large you’ll see an economic contraction and a collapse of your party’s support unless he gets offsetting tax cuts through, which he won’t since he has such a slim majority in Congress.

You said tariffs are paid by the company importing. Don’t contradict our self a sentence later. That tiny bump on that chart is still below pre 90s level. Tariffs will work if we can replace overseas Chinese with robots. They won’t work if we need to replace them with an aging lazy workforce. Not unless everyone agrees to give up living standards.

@bored_stigma @zerohedge Nope, they barely budged. Stop falling for trumps theatrics. Tariffs are paid for by the company importing. Most manufacturing companies in the U.S. have to import whatever they’re using to manufacturing so you’re really taxing them.

Because he didn’t actually go through with a lot of them. He put in lots of exceptions or cancelled them when markets started dumping. He also had to bail out farmers for the small section they did get to. Look at the average tariff rates. They’ve barely budged. And tariffs are just avoided even if passed eventually. Instead of coming down and giving a bunch of drug addicts in the Appalachias jobs, companies will import from the other 195 countries in the world.
