Writer/Director | repd:
@unitedagents
Working to get some of the crazy shit going on in my head out into the world. Co-host of The
@directorstake
Podcast.
I’m very happy to (finally) announce that my next short film SPACE PLUG, produced as part of
@NFTSFilmTV
and Star Imagine UK shorts incubator (
@DisneyPlusUK
), will world premiere in official selection at the BFI London Film Festival on the 7th October!
I’m currently on a bit of a culture binge trying to expand the palette. I was lucky enough to watch Jodie Comer in the one woman play Prima Facie this evening. She is of course an absolute powerhouse as she glides through her entire range with absolute control.
Well. It's been a long old grind to get to this point, but I'm extremely excited to say that from here on out I'm going to be represented by
@UnitedAgents
. Someone please give me a job.
From House of the Dragon to the House of Mouse. A big shout out to the
@NFTSFilmTV
and
@DisneyPlus
for believing in what is probably the wildest thing I’ve ever written. I’m really looking forward to getting going with it! We move.
I've officially graduated from my Masters degree with the
@nftsfilmtv
today, my second Masters... Which now means I have as many masters degrees as I do GCSEs. Go figure.
I’m very excited to announce that my graduation film Caterpillar has been selected for the BAFTA Qualifying Carmarthen Bay Film Festival 2022. It’s an important story and I’m super proud of the filmmaking in it, so very excited for it to find audiences.
Literally scraping by off savings with multiple masters degrees behind me, whilst my friends in other countries are given help to support them whilst they are self employed. This country is hostile to people in the arts if you don’t have considerable family wealth.
The UK has a world leading creative sector with our musicians, artists, fashion labels and publishers known across the world.
In the last decade this sector has grown over 1.5x faster than the UK economy – boosting jobs, opportunities and growth for people across the country.
ANNOUNCEMENT: As Directors starting on the outside of the film industry, we quickly saw that the pathway in doesn’t really exist. So we created a podcast to help make that a bit clearer. I present to you... The Directors Take Podcast.

I saw somewhere that
@ava
said that people aren't interested in potential, they are interested in momentum... and I haven't stopped thinking about that since.
I’ve had to sign a big phat non-disclosure agreement, so anyway… here’s me and my dad enjoying a nice little event in London Leicester Square this evening

#HouseofthedragonHBO
@ava
@GDIGM
I read this script about a year ago now, and it just happened to coincide with
#MeToo
. The script is unfortunately so relevant and some would say ahead of its time. But it's really just about the fact a female writer was given an opportunity (even if they didn't let her direct).
Today is my first true day of being a TV and Film Director, in that I’m now unemployed, forcing myself out of bed and waiting for a job offer to come in.
@benmitchell621
Don’t try to fix everything in each rewrite. With each pass work on a specific aspect, so… one pass to heighten stakes. One pass to deepen certain character(s). One pass for dialogue etc. etc.
Naturally you end up doing other bits as you go, but it makes it more manageable.
I did a masterclass today at London Screen Academy. I talked about my journey into filmmaking, screened my earliest work and tried to breakdown the myth of ‘talent’. It’s always fun doing stuff like this.
(There were people sat in those seats eventually)
The perks of making a film with
@DisneyPlusUK
are numerous. Getting to hang out at premieres with a bunch of other talented filmmakers is right up there though.
#IndianaJones
I was invited to a talk at the House of Commons today, courtesy of Warner Bros. I got to speak to a bunch of powerhouses in the UK film industry, but most importantly I got to chat to the legend that is
@rioferdy5
for a bit. Strong evening!
(That’s Wonka’s costume, not Rio)
2023 - Professional highlights
-I created a successful podcast (
@DirectorsTake
)
-I Wrote/Directed a film funded by Disney and NFTS.
-My film premiered at BFI LFF.
-I hosted a talk at BAFTA.
-I’ve begun teaching film practice as a freelancer.
-Reached my film writing goals
I didn’t anticipate the industry absolutely tanking when I wrote this… But that aside, I’ve learnt a lot this year, realigned with what I want to do and have made massive professional strides.
I’m exactly where I need to be and there’s so much more to come.
Episode 40 of The Directors’ Take
#Podcast
is now LIVE on all major platforms.
In this episode of The Directors' Take, your hosts
@Oz_Arshad
and
@chocuz
are joined by absolutely nobody, as they do a recap on all of The Directors' Take episodes so far.
This is the end!
So many people have never watched Atlanta because they have a preconceived idea (… 👀) of what the show actually is.
When what it really is, is one of the funniest, most surreal, well directed and performed shows ever made.
Guys. I’ve decided to turn my frustration at the broken Film & TV industry pathways into something productive. Me and
@Oz_Arshad
have created a podcast available for free on all major platforms which aims to break down what being a working director actually is. Ep1 is OUT NOW!
Episode 1 of The Directors' Take Podcast is now AVAILABLE on all major podcasting platforms.
This features your hosts Oz and Marcus talking you through their own paths into the Film and TV industry, as they break down how they made the films that kickstarted their careers.
@WorldFamousOne
@FTalentScout
He was a press resistant midfielder who could break lines with passing or carries like Moussa Dembele. The fact he said was a tireless runner is just lazy profiling based on I don’t know what? If I could actually see into the future I wouldn’t waste my talent posting on X 😂
I‘ve been the lead tutor to a team of talented young filmmakers over the last 10 days for
@BFIFilmAcademy
. A super rewarding experience taking them through the process of making their own film, which was screened today at BFI Southbank. Very proud of what they’ve achieved!
We saw the conversation happening around the
@bfinetwork
applications, with lots of people struggling to find Producers.
We worked to get this episode finished to help you all out with it… For this deadline and beyond!
Do share this far and wide for everyone to see.
♥️
I tweeted earlier about the film podcasts I listen to because there is nothing like discovering a new one and it opening up a whole new treasure trove of learning. So here’s a thread of my subscriptions…
(I’m a writer/director so it will be focused on that)
This was very surreal and it took me all of yesterday to recover from it. It feels like a big ol’ milestone and I can’t wait to start dropping episodes for season 2 because there are so many bangers already in the can!
This was a ridiculous evening. We managed to fill up the
@riocinema
with our first ever live event.
Thank you all for the shares, love and engagement because it made it all possible.
We are kicking off season 2 with a bang… and you won’t have to wait too long for it! ♥️
All of the work we put into The
@DirectorsTake
has its perks. I was blessed to have been invited to a preview screening of
#TheCreator
followed by a Q&A with Gareth Edwards. Shout out to
@vampuk_
for the hook up 💪🏾

This Noel Clarke interview is pretty wild. When he’s talking about an exec that told him that one of the two leads in Bulletproof has to be white or it won’t sell. And now that same exec is heading up a studio… The film and tv industry everyone🙅🏾♂️
Blessed to have been invited on the red carpet to watch The Book of Clarence tonight at
@BFI
#LFF
. Thank you Warner Bros. Discovery for the hook up ❤️
Do these big film companies and streamers understand that the next generation of filmmakers can see all of the fuckery that they’re pulling on people and their projects?
A generation of filmmakers who are increasingly resourceful, nimble and adept at creating without big money.
I wanna get a TV directing credit in 2023, so TV people… let’s have a conversation because my price will be going up in 2024. I’m trying to put you on early.
This is a feature length deep dive into when and how you should approach directing agents… and what happens once you sign with them!
This covers everything you need to know about what the director/agent relationship looks like, so do share to help people on the come up!
Episode 4 of The Directors' Take Podcast is now AVAILABLE on all major platforms. In this episode your hosts

and

are joined by Mark Brennan from United Agents to demystify everything about the director/agent relationship.

Apparently I’m a next gen rising star. For the people that know me, they know I’d rather be silently working away at the stories, so that I can turn up to the next opportunity perfect, but I’m learning to enjoy this part of the process too.
We don’t just do talks on zoom. Marcus was recently at
@berlinale
talking on a couple of panels for
@berlin_talents
@WBDAccess
and the MPA.
It’s always a pleasure to connect with people in person and to talk about the journey so far! Obviously had to shout out the podcast too!

Mad that I was literally going off about how unsustainable the industry is not even 48hrs ago on here, and now my image is used as the face of a sustainable future review. Lol.
Following the BFI Skills Review, the UK film & TV sectors came together to tackle the systemic challenges to skills development in the industry. Recommendations focussed on taking a new approach across the UK.

I wrapped on my grad film last night. I've been staring at the footage all week feeling like somebody else must have shot this. It really feels like I've levelled up over the past three years, all I needed was the chance. Big love to everyone who has helped make it happen.
With this next short film, I basically decided that if I’m going to ruin my own career, I may as well do it now and save myself some time/heartache/addictions.
I’ll be dropping images sometime soon and best believe me and
@Oz_Arshad
have podcast episodes diarising the process.
This stinks of a saviour narrative being created ahead of the Spring Budget announcement on March 6th. Sky news doesn’t care about this.
They attack the arts because they know that the culture and world views are shaped by storytelling.
This came through a few days ago. I’d just spent 7hrs straight editing the latest episode with no break. It made the entire days work feel worthwhile knowing the impact we’re making.
We received this message from a listener/working director after they listened to our most recent episode with
@Directors_UK
.
This is the sort of thing that keeps us going.
Episode 8 was my favourite script on the page, and it was still my favourite after watching all the episodes. It. Goes. Off.
I’m looking forward to seeing the fans reactions to it!
So...I just finished watching
#HouseOfTheDragon
Episode 8, and I am SHOOK. I've been sitting in this same spot for 20 minutes, just staring into the middle-distance. It's been a while since a Game of Thrones episode has done this to me.
This Sunday is going to be nuts.
There was a proper chatty patty sat next to me on the train this eve. I ended up telling him I was a film director and he asked if he could invest in my next project. Anyway, I’m up £10 now. I always knew this film shit would pay off one day.
This is almost a year to the day that I wrote the very first draft under the self-imposed restriction of writing the weirdest thing I could think of without worrying about how I would pull it off.
It’s a film about a baby that grows up in a blank room in the middle of space.
The creative industries in the UK are an absolute scam. Either significant change or a significant implosion will occur at some stage soon. It’s up to the decision-makers to decide if they want to lead the change or have it be forced upon them.
Also side note… 36 episodes by the way. Do you understand how much work that is!?!?
Ridiculous. I need a holiday. It’s been a pleasure. But I need a holiday.
Thanks for all of your engagement, sharing and love, it makes it all really worthwhile because I see we’re helping!
Episode 36 of The Directors’ Take is now LIVE on all

platforms.
In this episode, your hosts
@Oz_Arshad
and
@chocuz
are joined by absolutely no-one, as we break down story structure to define what makes a great short film!
After players got racially abused for missing penalties at a major tournament last time out, each penalty taker for England today was black or mixed race and we went 5 for 5.
I’m very happy to (finally) announce that my next short film SPACE PLUG, produced as part of
@NFTSFilmTV
and Star Imagine UK shorts incubator (
@DisneyPlusUK
), will world premiere in official selection at the BFI London Film Festival on the 7th October!
I wrote this in 2018, in a single day out of pure frustration and it ended up putting me on a fast track into the industry. The best thing I ever did was stop waiting for permission.
I showed the new film to my dad over Christmas and it blew his mind. Rocked his shit. Unseasoned his steak etc. etc.
Hopefully there’ll be good festival news for SPACE PLUG this year. It’s been getting amazing responses behind the scenes, so it’s time for an audience to see it!
@DirectorsTake
@BFI
The visuals were built entirely organically and instinctually. I didn’t impose an aesthetic for the sake of an aesthetic… I never do. As we were shooting though, I really began to see how special it was. Having black characters, in a black and white sci-fi piece. It’s rare.
I did a cinema double bill yesterday. Firstly, I saw How to Have Sex by
@maamw
. My chair broke after five mins and I had to move… Not sure if it was related to my enjoyment of the film or not, but I thought it was excellent work. You should all go and see it in a cinema.
I was lucky enough to have been invited to the UK premiere of
#RyeLane
tonight in none other than
@Peckhamplex
. It’s a joyful little film which had the whole cinema in stitches. A perfect date movie. Get out and see it.
Me and Oz get lovely feedback about this podcast daily, and we never really anticipated how much it would resonate. Do keep listening, liking and sharing! There’s so much more to come with some incredible guests!
I just watched Decision to Leave, and my takeaway is that Park Chan Wook could make a film about shitting in a plastic bag and I’d still leave the cinema in awe. What I’m saying is… the guy is a master of the craft.
This is a gift of a conversation. We really break down the process of development in this so you know exactly what to expect from this process, as well as what can go wrong!
Do share it far and wide so the information reaches as many people as possible.
FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT: More exciting news as my
@NFTSFilmTV
graduation film has been selected for the Oscar qualifying
@LAshortsFest
2022.
It was such a big effort from the entire team on this one and I’m very thankful it is finding an audience!
I’m gonna keep posting this still until I make something cooler. I love it. It doesn’t make sense. A black baby. In a plain white room. In Space. In black and white.
I can’t wait for audiences to see this film because it only gets weirder from this point onwards.
This is almost a year to the day that I wrote the very first draft under the self-imposed restriction of writing the weirdest thing I could think of without worrying about how I would pull it off.
It’s a film about a baby that grows up in a blank room in the middle of space.
The next mad bit of news is that the second film I directed at the
@NFTSFilmTV
, a short thriller/horror film called The Retreat, has been selected for
@TampereFilmFest
in the GEN XYZ section. Stacking dem laurels.
…
We hope you’ve enjoyed what we’ve done so far.
This podcast is all about opening up information to as many people as possible, empowering you all to make your own work in the knowledge you’re doing all the right things. The journey will take you wherever you’re supposed to go.
We’re committed to dropping nothing but important episodes for you guys, full of information that does not exist anywhere else in one place.
We know this because we have both trained as highly as you can in the UK. With that, the first of a two-parter is coming this Sunday 💪🏾
FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT: I'm a little bit late with this announcement, but my
@NFTSFilmTV
graduation film has been selected for the BAFTA and BIFA Qualifying
@norwichfilmfest
.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this film being screened in England!
As ever. What a privilege it is to speak to people at the top of the game about their craft. I hope you all enjoy the chat!
Paul is one of Lynne Ramsay’s closest long-term collaborators and provided a great insight into their processes.

An absolute pleasure to be on the other side of an NFTS panel this afternoon. Hopefully I passed on some useful nuggets to the next generation of filmmakers 💪 and an honour to share a space with these powerhouse graduates!
There are absolutely no shortcuts when it comes to breaking into the industry as a director… I would say though, that this episode is a distillation of what directing is to me at its most fundamental level, which is the root to grow from. It’s all about perspective and emotion.

We had no idea how to combat low blocks under Ole. Once we can sustain attacks in our opponents 3rd, we’ll see the best out of our team.
These top 100 lists are almost anti-art. How can you compare paintings? There is no definitive answer. And also, I couldn’t name 100 films I like unless I lied my way through the list to try and fit in. There’s probably about 20 films I really care about, the rest are films.
