📢 We are NOW RECRUITING for our study examining the effects of perinatal diet on mental health! 🥑🧠
🤰 We are seeking women between 4 and 20 weeks pregnant in the Ottawa, ON area to participate.
ℹ️ See below for details & contact information, and please share!
Truly can’t believe I am having to fight for maternity leave. I’m employed full-time at a university, it’s 2023, and this is Canada. And you wonder why you can’t retain women in academia? This is a disgrace.
Didn’t get CIHR, again. 🙇🏼♀️ Cried a little, ate a peanut butter marshmallow square, now I’m going to buy myself a dress 👗. Will start on the next application tomorrow.

Yesterday I successfully defended my PhD! 🎉 I feel very lucky to have had such an awesome graduate school experience and looking forward to continuing my career in academia!

A team of surgical oncologists basically performed a 9-hour-long surgical miracle on my mum today. I am so grateful to Dr. Gregory Knapp, Dr. Stephanie Hiebert, Dr. Stephen Middleton, and Dr. Stephanie Snow (all of
@DalhousieU
). Modern medicine is truly wild and amazing. 🙏🏼
Last month I received approval from my committee to defend my PhD thesis in March 2021. This was huge for me - it is so nice to have an end in sight!! 🎉🎓Now to get through the next 8 months... 😅
Is it just me or is it absolutely ridiculous that
@uOttawa
provides
@Microsoft
Office, Outlook, etc. software (you know, the basics I need to do my job) to students and faculty but not postdocs.....
Honoured to have received the 2024 Postdoctoral Fellow Award from
@TheRoyalMHC

I would like to recruit colleagues at the postdoctoral and graduate student levels. We have exciting projects on elucidating the molecular logic of neural circuit Organization and Plasticity. Meet me on the sidelines of the
@CAN_ACN
annual meeting in Toronto.. Please RT.
Crushed that my application for a prestigious grant didn’t even get past the 1st round 😞 Spending the evening feeling sorry for myself, drinking a glass of wine (or 2), & binge watching
@TheMindyProject
. The letdowns of academia can be harsh, but I’ll get back to it tomorrow.
I’m teaching an awesome undergrad course at
@uottawa
this semester - NUT1150: Food Psychology, originally developed by
@MCAudet1
. So interesting and fun to teach - makes me wish there had been a course like this when I was in undergrad!! 🧠🥦🍰
Awesome seminar this morning on hormonal changes in depression in women by Dr.

Final month of thesis preparation before submission. Vacillating between “I GOT this!!!!!” and “Holy shit what have I done how in the hell am I going to pull this off”

Thrilled to share my new role of co-Editor-in-Chief of the

So so happy to share that my partner Jon is now a practicing lawyer - after months on the job search, he's been hired as a litigation associate at Nelligan Law - his dream position in our dream city 😊 things are looking up!!
Had an awesome time yesterday hosting our Grade 5’s for Brain Awareness Day and teaching them all about neurotransmitters in mental health!! 🧠

So proud of my brother-in-law
@tdbrothers
, an internal medicine physician who researches & specializes in addiction medicine, for leading the initiative for Halifax (my hometown!) to get an OPS. This harm reduction strategy save lives, why wouldn't we??
Couldn’t share before without ruining a surprise visit to NS, but we are FULLY VAXXED!!! 💉✅🎉 (We were also a little hungover and late for this early morning appt so please excuse our looks 🙈)
Having one of those "how the HELL do people balance work, quality time with family, hanging out with friends, exercise, hobbies, eating healthy, appointments, getting enough sleep, and chores?!" kind of weeks 🙃
I wouldn't trade it for the world, but it's true that
#PhDLife
is fraught with mental health issues as a result of academic & professional pressures ("produce, produce, produce") compounded by the financial burdens (which can be very isolating)
When I was doing my ethics application to run my clinical trial, I had to fill out a section on contingency planning for what we would do in the event of ‘an epidemic, pandemic, or civil disaster’. I laughed and laughed & now I’m going back like.. Ok what did I write...
#COVID19
A pleasure to be in Taiwan to present at the
@MbiSymposium
! Just missing
@drmelissalane
& Annabel Mueller-Stierlin who joined us virtually 👏🏼 (also - baby’s first international conference 🤰🏼☺️)
Up to my eyeballs in my
@CIHR_IRSC
Banting postdoc fellowship app, but it is sooo very satisfying every time I get a section done and am happy with it! 📝
Pleased to share that the 2019 issue of Health Science Inquiry
@HSInquiry

A year of ups & downs defined by stress, but also support ❤️
Here’s to 2019! 🥂
I have recently added a new role to my CV, the one I am most pleased with yet ☺️ thank you to
@WallaceLindsay

@tdbrothers
for blessing me with this new credential!!
Reading while I’m supposed to be working... but I can’t help it because
#Inferior
is so good. “...there are few psychological differences between the sexes, and the differences seen are heavily shaped by culture, not biology.”

As researchers, we have a duty to protect the well-being of research participants and avoid exploitation, but I can certainly attest to the existence (and discouraging nature) of the "ethics sprawl" phenomenon

The highs and lows of academia: feeling like a stressed-out failure one minute, then getting a sweet message from one of my students and an award nomination from my supervisor and feeling momentarily on top of the world again! 🎢
Back to reality, but had a fantastic time last week at
@_ISNPR
! So great to connect (in-person) with so many new colleagues and be involved in the planning ☺️ coming back super inspired and motivated!

I’m embarrassed to share the first 4 letters of my last name with The Wall Street Journal. Take that sad misogynistic piece of trash article down,

Thrilled to share that my commentary, Diet as a Modifiable Contributor and Potential Treatment Strategy for Major Depressive Disorder, was chosen as one of Health Science Inquiries top three submissions for their 2018 issue. Check it out here!
Been thinking about what a year it has been for milestones in my circle: Partner graduates from law school; one best friend graduates from medical school; other best friend buys a house; sister turns 30, publishes in the Lancet, & gets married. So proud of all of them 🤗♥️
"...Academia must learn to respect the work–life balance that many researchers struggle to find." But pleased to read that there is an entire conference dedicated to the mental health & wellbeing of graduate students!

Things I underestimated during my PhD until I actually started data analysis: 1) How much time I would spend just cleaning my data before I could even analyze it; and 2) How useful Pivot Tables are in Excel 📊
@OpenAcademics
Hi!! I'm Caroline, PhD candidate in Neuroscience at Queen's University in Canada 🇨🇦
1) I study the gut-brain axis, and how diet and nutrition affect mental health
2) I have too many favourite books to pick just one!

Supporting world-leading science and research is a key component of our agenda. Yesterday, I met with the top 15 research-intensive universities to chat about how science is a core component of the innovation pipeline and how we will continue to strengthen our research ecosystem.
It's been such a pleasure serving as co-Editor-in-Chief of
@HSInquiry
for the past 2 years alongside Tamana. Such a fantastic collaborative learning experience in leadership on the editorial side of academic publishing in the health sciences!
We also wanted to extend a HUGE thank you to our outgoing co-EICs, Caroline Wallace and Tamana Yousof for their hard work, dedication, innovation, and vision in growing HSI over the past 2 years. We wish them all the best as they move onwards & upwards in their academic careers!
