This, but for every major metropolitan area. Cities should never be scary places.

The most important thing San Francisco politicians can do to resist Trump is get our own house in order. San Francisco should be a promise of what America can aspire to be, not a cautionary tale for what it must avoid becoming

I'm as depressed as anybody about what just happened, but giving myself exactly one day to mourn. Tomorrow, we start fighting back tooth and nail - starting with fighting the NIMBY cancer to make housing possible in places that still respect human rights.

@zyudhishthu Same. Curious what they charge; for reference the current street price in Munich is around $8 (or $10 with a drink).

Academics: What's the conventional wisdom on refereeing for fee-for-publishing journals by publishers sometimes described as predatory? I have the time and the article I was invited to review is within my field, but only want to referee if my recommendation is actually followed.

@DerekRury @KhoaVuUmn Have you looked into LEHD LODES? It's not at an industry level, but will tell you how many women and how many men work in any given census block (which you can then roll up to ZIP code or tract level).

Update: Thanks to the magic of the Internet Archive and a Windows 95 virtual machine, I got my hands on the data I needed! A real reminder of just how far we have come with GIS and statistical software packages, and interoperable data standards.

Transportation scholars! I know this might be a long shot, but does anybody happen to have a saved copy of the Census Bureau's 1980 UTPP (Urban Transportation Planning Package) or 1990 CTPP data at hand? The census bureau appears to have deleted them off their own servers.

(Alternatively, any other dataset that would help identify census blockgroups or tracts with substantial manufacturing or light industry employment in 1980/1990 in as many urban areas as possible)

Same, but for any kind of graduate school. Working for a couple years before applying for and entering a PhD program really helped me think through what I was looking for in a career before committing, while also saving up $$$ and enjoying life.

if you’re just graduating college I would advise against law school. go do something else that you think you could be good at first. law school will always always be there but making an exit from the legal profession is way harder than people say!

@zyudhishthu If the trips are mostly short and local, isn't the question how good and how viable the alternatives (driving on local streets, bus/LRT, bike, etc) are for most people doing those trips - and what can be done to make those alternatives more attractive?
