Improved outcomes were not the real goals of the program. The goals were to give money to certain corporate friends, create a public image of "doing something", and to boost morale. I suspect many people see the program as a total success.

Agreed. I think this is a consequence of the stereotypical "restrained feminine" culture though. Women who do less hands-on work and have too much time to worry about their looks and social standing cause trouble. Such petty behavior is less common in ranch girls, for instance.

They didn’t maintain it because they didn’t value it, because they were given it. All that humanitarian assistance created dependence, and has held back a lot of Africa. Providing assets that warlords can seize and use to destabilize regions isn’t helping either.

Toured a bison ranch once. The guide said he's had more than one visitor have a panic attack when they go out into the fields and can't see any buildings or roads or power lines.
Totally disoriented them. Made them feel like they had been on a spacewalk and the tether got cut.

Too much of our interactions are virtual. Easily ignored, easily scrolled past. People have no agency in what they consume, and that programs them to feel they can't react to even live things before their eyes.

My grade 3 teach knew poor students would be demotivated by this, while good students might get a big head. She tried to be clever by making it easier for poor students to move up, but harder for good students. This wound up teaching all of us that nothing we did really mattered.

My proposal is a return to multi-generational housing. Retirees would love to help watch the grandkids, I'd wager. Hell of a lot cheaper than daycare and retirement homes.
Sure, working adults won't have the fantasy shown in magazines and TV shows, but that was hogwash anyway.

I think some socially awkward people simply chose to identify as "autistic" or "neurodivergent" because it would explain away their difficulties. No longer do they need to feel anxious about being anxious.
