~personal news~
I’m taking a year off from The Hill Times to focus on projects outside the daily political news cycle.
The point is to give myself a year’s worth of breathing room to indulge in story-telling I find creatively and intellectually fulfilling. 1/
I’ll just say this: those harassing, threatening, and stalking
@atRachelGilmore

@sabaeitizaz
& others who cannot afford to be as vocal picked the wrong people to fuck with. /1

That's my mom! We (my sister, dad, and I) were on that flight too. How cool to randomly see people talk about it on Twitter... I'll let her know ❤️
Women are supposed to stay silent until the bad thing actually happens.
Abusers know this and they weaponize plausible deniability & tell us we’re overreacting. “I was just..”
It’s gaslighting and it’s happening to women and BIPOC journalists on a mass scale right now.

So... I spent this week *literally* chasing Conservative MPs who did NOT want to talk about their leader's position on trans people's access to bathrooms, change rooms, and sport. (
@MichelleRempel
literally ran away.)
Here's that story, unlocked for 24 h.
This industry can be exploitative and extractive in the way it treats journalists, (and sources for that matter), but particularly freelancers, and that approach serves no one.
Keep raising your voices, Rachel, Erica, and Saba. You are making a difference. /4
Tired of the attempts to gaslight the entire downtown population of Ottawa regarding what they're seeing and experiencing with their very own eyes, ears, and in their bodies
I am a bit emotional to share my first byline for

I hope you read it.

There is no need to caveat this statement and and give her attackers more ammunition.
This is the issue with
#cdnmedia
. If you incite controversy in any way, your colleagues become scared to support you for fear of being accused of bias.
Fuck bias, I’m scared for my friend.
This kind of conduct towards
@atRachelGilmore
is shocking.
You may disagree with people's views or reporting. That is fair criticism. But at the end of the day, journalists are also human beings. Efforts to harass and intimidate are beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour.
A very Ottawa-centric thread about parking greed:
I was at Lansdowne yesterday for a vintage market. I had already parked underground for the full day-$25. I had to bring my car up to pack it at the end of the market, but a few of us wanted to grab dinner 1/

As someone who grew up in Barrie (and currently lives here), and as someone with first hand experience with Barrie politics, this whole situation—including the involvement of a media member—tracks with the social and political culture here. It's a uniquely devastating place.
Next time you have a roaming charge because you accidentally turned off airplane mode for literally ONE SECOND outside of the country, you should try “sincerely apologizing” and see what they say

‘Many’ MPs work ‘in a perpetual state of fear,’ says Liberal MP Marco Mendicino. NDP MP Charlie Angus was recently accosted at a beach in his riding. Countless MPs have been subjected to threats and death threats. By

As
@ChiefRoseAnne
enters the AFN's General Assembly today, here's some reporting I've done about the saga of her suspension/non-suspension/ban from the AGA/un-ban from the AGA.
1/
That’s the end of my rant but there’s something deeper here. Like this is city property, managed by a private company, hiring another private company to turn parking tickets into a business. Who knows what data that app collects + sells once it’s installed on my phone. UGH. (End)
It's important to note here that a misogyny problem within a First Nations organization would have been created by colonial conditions. Patriarchy is a colonial structure and is embedded in colonial tools like the Indian Act. 5/
It's a busy news day, but if you have a few minutes before you log off for the weekend, I'd love it if you'd read my latest column, featuring Immigration Minister Marc Miller:

A lot of journalists do what they do because they are interested in holding power to account. A lot of PR ppl defend that power. It’s an adversarial relationship so yeah it can be weird to switch teams

Articulating my symptoms in a way that would be understood by doctors was such a challenge until I learned the lingo. Without the proper language, how do you advocate for yourself?
My latest: a look into where the messaging on trans people being espoused by CPC Leader Poilievre comes from, and the danger ahead. (unlocked for 24 hrs)

@Tyler_The_Wise
Lmao ok but I could make up a graph right now to make the opposite point here. You can argue about your opinions but this just isn’t based on actual data. It’s as good as a doodle
Is Pierre Poilievre taking his cues on anti-trans rhetoric from far-right factions?
According to exclusive reporting from
@bychelseanash
, one senior Conservative insider thinks so.
Here’s what you need to know.
Poilievre this morning challenging a reporter on using the term "safe supply," accusing him of regurgitating the gov's talking points.
My response to Poilievre would have been: so you want us to use your talking points, instead? Why should I take your language over theirs?
I spoke to a number of women Indigenous leaders and activists, incl.
@Pam_Palmater
, Rose LeMay
@The_IRG
,
@michele_audette
, and
@EllenGabriel1
. Not all agreed the suspension was gender related, but they all confirmed that the AFN has a misogyny problem. 4/
When
@michele_audette
was president of the Que. Native Women’s Association, she remembers working to pass resolutions at the AFN to end sexual violence against Indigenous women.
Some chiefs at that table, who had a vote, were themselves in court for sexual misconduct, she said.
Congratulations to my dear friend

Archibald told
@EvanLSolomon
she believed the fact that she is the first woman national chief who also wants to clean up "corruption" led to her suspension. She said the AFN “is one of the worst places for misogyny, and the treatment of women.” 3/
Speaking of immigrants' and their place in Canada, I just published this 2,000 word feature on one family's experience with IRCC, which rejected their refugee status claim because the threat of murder is too mundane an occurrence in Jamaica.
There is also the fact that other (men) regional chiefs have been subject to allegations of misconduct/workplace harassment and not been suspended.
Sask. Regional Chief Bobby Cameron is currently being sued by a former employee for wrongful dismissal, but still in his role.
I get that Lansdowne is already too car-centric but I think this is why. If you build something around cars like that, you can make tens of thousands per day in parking tickets, let alone the parking fees people are already paying.
A super rich socialite who’s never had a job speaking to a room filled with laurentian elites who have never worried about the cost of groceries.
I’m honestly shocked they thought filming this would look good. “Let them eat cake,” but televised.
In situations of government incompetence resulting in the illness, disability and death of citizens, there should be some mechanism by which the electorate can trigger an emergency election.
Adding to recent names he's called Pierre Poilievre, including "jackass" and "bullshitter," Miller tells me Poilievre is a "charlatan" and a "snake-oil salesman."
He seems genuinely offended by Poilievre's politics, and feels the need to speak very frankly about it.
The AFN's credibility as a representative for First Nations is being called into question, particularly because FNs have long wanted a universal vote for the leadership. Right now, only the regional chiefs vote for the national chief.
@golfdad1977

He eventually told me that because the machine I’d parked beside was out of order, and he’d reported it as out of order, that nobody could to let me until it got fixed. So I didn’t have to download the stupid app.
Then I did the math: 5 staff x 40 tickets x $80 ea= $16,000.
He shrugged.
I started asking questions. How many attendants are working tonight? 4-5, he said.
How many tickets do you give on an average shift? 30-40, he said.
How much are they? $80 each.
Does he have a quota to meet? Silence.

This is their literal job: to walk around (for however long a shift is, I’m not sure) and place as many tickets as they can.
I asked if he worked on commission. He said no, but the parking company, contracted by the owners of Lansdowne, does get paid commission.
They just don’t pass that onto the staff, it seems, and instead just hire them at a flat rate.
Who is the ‘owner’ of Lansdowne here? City of Ottawa owns the land, right? So why doesn’t bylaw monitor parking instead? The city contracts out operations of Lansdowne to OSEG…

If you have a few minutes on this app today I'd appreciate you reading about how ancestral Algonquin remains were very likely built into the walls of Parliament. It's paywalled but I'll put a few details down below.
it is a callous move especially for air canada & westjet workers (mostly flight attendants), who now have no choice but to insert themselves in what amounts to a crowd on a regular basis
In conclusion: regardless of the veracity of the allegations of corruption coming from Archibald OR the allegations of workplace harassment against her—the systemic problems within AFN are coming to a head with this suspension &what happens at this AGA will impact the AFNs future
Whatever the truth of it is, that headline is journalistic malpractice and you would NEVER catch a headline characterizing something like a sexual assault in this manner.
Alleged, alleged, alleged...
Some of the most lazy, dog shit reporting I've ever seen. Factual inaccuracy about the journalist, a headline that falsely suggests the charge has been proven in court, omitting the journalist's critical reporting of EPS... No wonder so many are turning to independent media.
There's long been a disconnect between First Nations people and the AFN executive—basically the 'business' end of the org. The AFN's ability (or willingness) to meaningfully advocate for First Nations over the years has been called into question by some—including by Archibald.
it amazes me constantly on this site that people who have absolutely zero clue what they're talking about think they are absolutely the most authoritative voice on the matter
I carry no brief for Patrick Brown. But this clusterfuzzle by CTV had two really important consequences. One, it made it harder for real harassment allegations to see the light of day. Two, it made it way, way more difficult to convince people to run for office. 1/x
If
@ChiefRoseAnne
is removed by the Assembly this week, it seems it will only deepen the fracture between AFN executive and many community members who do not feel represented by the organization. The future of the AFN itself could be called into question.
I just submitted to the

Can you imagine sending a carefully worded message in which you make a reasonable request of a neighbour and then they … tweet it out?
This is so out of touch with the concept of community it’s tragic.
My honest advice to those wanting to go into journalism is study something else in undergrad, then do a master's of journalism. You'll gain different expertise (which will help you in journalism) and the MJ's offer the same technical skills as the BJs, but in less time
