Two months ago, we kicked off our campaign for a sustainable and inclusive Culver City. Your support since then has meant the world to me.
Thank you for standing with me for affordable housing, safe streets, and a care-centered budget. With your help, I know we can win!
4 female students were just standing on the side of the road and now they’re gone, killed by a speeding driver. This is the price we pay for designing streets so cars can go as fast as possible.
#UPDATE
: Pepperdine University has reason to believe the four individuals killed in the PCH crash Tuesday night were Pepperdine students, the Public Relations office wrote in an Oct. 18 email to the Pepperdine community.
Culver City Councilmember scolds parents for allowing their kids to bike in a PROTECTED bike lane:
"My god, parents! You should not have your kids there! I should never ever have my kids bike on those streets... you really shouldn't encourage your young to bike"
the vibes on LA transit right now feel so different to me compared to even a few months ago because of the metro ambassadors— they are everywhere you look, bright green and impossible to miss, multiple at each station welcoming you… people talking to them and asking questions…
Yet another bewildering veto by this Governor.
@GavinNewsom
just vetoed our bill to remove the punishment of jail & criminal charges for not paying transit fare because one operator told him that fare evasion is a good indicator of whether someone will commit other crimes.
a bill to eliminate parking minimums near transit in California continues to face opposition from
@Western_Center
who claim eliminating minimums without an affordability requirement will harm low income folks. But in study after study, ending parking mins improves affordability.
well that didn’t take long. Culver City’s new conservative Council just moved to agendize creating a 41.18 esque ban on encampments in Culver City and reverse the $25 minimum wage for healthcare workers just passed by the previous council in this SAME meeting just hours before.
Get in the basket, we’re running for Culver City Council!
I'm an organizer, policy analyst, and renter. I work for Los Angeles Dept of Transportation, served as Vice Chair of Culver CIty's Committee on Housing & Homelessness and co-created
@CulverCityPride
.
my e line train was super delayed today and an ambassador kept everyone updated. The program feels like it could spur transformative change by showing us how we can prevent harm without punishment. G-d willing it grows to cover the whole system !
still celebrating this massive win! Not even 2 years ago, LA Times found that LASD was ticketing thousands of cyclists, mostly Latinx, and searching 85% for no cause at all.
Now we're sponsoring AB 825 with
@ib2_real
to bring this reform statewide.
Culver City collaborated with LA on this sweep, and we now know the results— 2/52 people who wanted shelter got it.
That’s < 4%.
The data confirms what we already knew — sweeps don’t work.
A cyclist is killed every 3 days in California and
@GavinNewsom
just vetoed our bill AB 825 to legalize sidewalk cycling on our most dangerous streets.
Newsom just vetoed SB 457, our bill with
@Portantino
to create a $1000 refundable tax credit for low income, car-free families. He said it wasn't in the budget just months after proposing to spend hundreds of millions to pay folks per car they own and suspend the diesel gas tax..
last night the Mayor and 2 Councilmembers approved their brick-headed plan to rip out a beloved protected bike lane and demolish pedestrian bulb-outs for more car lanes, safety & climate be damned. Listen to Vice Mayor
@YasmineMcMorrin
’s powerful remarks
our city council just passed a ban on sleeping anywhere in our city with anything but a blanket and a pillow. Setting aside the cruelty of that sentence for a brief moment ….
- double and triple digit increases in cycling and transit.
- 14-19% boost to sales for businesses on the corridor.
- less than 2min difference in car travel times.
our complete street is a runaway success by any measure. And all our council has to do is not make it worse!
MOVE Culver City Releases Post-Pilot Report
The City Council will discuss the project at the Monday, April 24, 2023 City Council Meeting. This item is agendized as A-1. Please visit for more information on the project.
I would be so embarrassed if a policy I championed made national news for its cruelty and stupidity. But I guess for our new conservative council majority, all press is good press?
the idea that we should continue throwing people in jail for not paying $1.75 because they are more likely to commit other *hypothetical* crimes is an impressive feat of mental gymnastics... all to continue the criminalization of poverty.
a huge developer in Culver City is trying to get rid of our car-free street just so their already-full parking garage can have more access points and I’m aaaabsolutely fumin
Thanks to a new law signed by Governor Newsom and authored by
@AsmRichardBloom
, local governments in California must switch all intersections to have leading pedestrian intervals. By prioritizing pedestrian travel, we can reduce emissions and, studies show, save people’s lives.
this weekend, a group of us led by former Mayor
@AlexFischCC
filed an open letter to Culver City Council and staff demanding full compliance with CEQA before taking any action to demolish the bike or bus lanes to create additional space for vehicle traffic
A grant application to fund a 100% affordable development with 95 units barely passed with two Councilmembers abstaining because they were afraid to add a protected bike lane.
That's unacceptable.
Affordable housing and safe streets cannot wait another year. The time is now.
Councilmember Dan O’Brein says comments tonight were overwhelmingly for keeping/expanding move. But still wants to remove the protected bike lane for more cars. He cites the survey of just Culver City residents “because that’s who votes”
Last night, Council booted me from the cmte I’ve served on for over 2 years. I can’t say for certain why I was the only incumbent not reappointed. But I was asked why I was so “negative” about the anti-camping law and answered honestly that I didn’t believe it was evidence based.
Also, it was political to not reappoint
@bubbathefish
to the CC housing& homelessness committee. He was the only incumbent not re appointed tonight.
His work on that body (along w the other members) has shined a light on our community’s views on this crisis.
Politics indeed.
affordable housing units using the density bonus went up 4.75X!! when San Diego abolished all parking minimums near transit and commercial areas...
@Western_Center
what else do y'all need to see?
The anti-camping ordinance culver city is considering is worse than I expected. A complete ban across all public land in the city, not confined to certain areas. Effectively legalizing sweeps everywhere.
Our bill with
@Portantino
creating a $1000 tax credit for low income families who don’t own a car just passed the CA legislature and heads to
@GavinNewsom
for his signature! I’m over the 🌙!!!!
A different man: “I have a housekeeper. I have a gardener. I have a pool man. Where are they supposed to park?!”
I cannot imagine the pain this man is going through 😞
you had a bill on your desk that would have reduced the
#1
cause of climate change in your state: private vehicle emissions. You vetoed it.
What are you doing to get Californians out of their cars?
I have declared a statewide emergency.
We’re deploying every resource available as we continue to respond to these fires and unprecedented high-winds.
If you live in an affected area, please stay safe, alert, and heed all warnings from local officials.
hands down the biggest weirdos in LA right now are the Culver City homeowners trying to stop 16 and 17 year olds from voting in city elections with signs that say “leave the kids alone!!”
the proposal shows unprotected lanes (class II) on Overland (35mph street) from venice to ballona creek. Join this meeting and demand fully protected bike lanes for the entire project!
@CulverCityGov
is planning major bike upgrades for a couple miles of Overland Avenue (extending to Playa and Hannum) - mark your calendar for meeting coming up in 2 weeks
the vibe in the room tonight is straight up exuberant. Several rounds of applause for our transportation department for creating something that gives so many people joy, safety and time with their families. 🥲
@Dodgers
they have been prominent queer activists for decades giving spiritual comfort to folks who lost friends and family to HIV. Sad that you treat them as disposable.
I’m an LGBT organizer and renter running for Culver City Council and today is my 33rd birthday! 🎂
If you care about affordable housing, safe streets for all modes, and a care-centered approach to safety… check out our campaign 👇
CA gives you up to $9500 if you buy an EV, but nothing to families who don't drive at all. Families that don't contribute to traffic, traffic violence, or pollution. Where is their rebate?
still incredible to me that we haven’t seen our mayor or majority councilmembers publicly use transit, bikes, or in any way encourage their constituents to use this project. Why are they so scared to lead?
does anything illustrate a rich NIMBY tantrum better than an LED billboard truck asking for petition signatures to oust two councilmembers just months before an election… these people love lighting their money on fire
its incredible how many fully grown adults i met canvassing who knew absolutely nothing about our local elections. meanwhile the teens are out here on the cusp of making history!
the bill passed out of committee 5-0, but this misinformation continues to threaten the bill and misleads legislators. fellow progressives should not be touting unproven theories on what does/does not make housing affordable. amplify experts or please give space to those who do!
I left my gym bag with tons of stuff in it on a
@CulverCityBus
and I called several days later and someone instantly picked up and said yea it’s here and now I get all my stuff back I really just love Culver City Bus so much send tweet
Assembly transportation chair
@LauraFriedmanCA
joins Sen.
@BenAllenCA
and Asm
@ib2_real
in publicly supporting Move Culver City’s protected bike lane and bus lane … not removing them for more cars. That’s a lot of state muscle— hope our council doesn’t ignore them!
MB just made it illegal to ride on the sidewalk and directs cyclists to "ride close to the right curb or edge of roadway" on streets without bike lanes.
This is why our bill AB-825 by
@ib2_real
to legalize sidewalk cycling on streets without bike lanes cannot wait another year.
The City Council adopted an urgency ordinance amending the Manhattan Beach Municipal Code establishing a speed limit, safety and operational standards, and location restrictions for bicycles, e-bikes, and motorized bicycles. Press Release:
..and we're off!
We gathered in the park this weekend to kickoff our campaign for a sustainable, inclusive Culver City for everyone!
Together, we can ensure that no matter who you are, how you get around, or how much money you make, you can thrive here.
hey
@AlexFischCC
, what if we made the bike/bus lane and 100% of the street dining on Culver Blvd PERMANENT.... and activated the public space between restaurants for the entire community??? just a thought!
this is why our bill with
@ib2_real
to decriminalize fare evasion is so important. If you can't afford transit, you can get cited by this cop and get a misdemeanor + 90 days in prison. Insane.
A grant application for 95 units of 100% affordable housing was almost killed because councilmembers were worried that an included bike lane would take away street parking.
Median rent here is now $3,390
How high does it have to get before we treat this like the crisis it is?
Hi there fellow person freaking out about climate change.
If you do one thing today, urge your CA assemblymember to vote YES on
#SB9
(legalize duplexes). It takes less time to do than reading this tweet 👇
LA Metro announces that B/D lines will increase frequency to every 12 minutes on September 10, 2023, and light rail frequencies will be increased to 8 minute peak, 10 minute off-peak in December 2023.
full sweep happening right now at the culver median / Inglewood. Unhoused folks reviewed the flyer TODAY which announces a sweep on Wednesday. But residents are saying the city’s outreach is telling them to pack up and leave today. Sanitation is taking their tents
we are disappointed but immensly grateful to
@ib2_real
for authoring this bill and the orgs below for their advocacy. We won't stop until this harmful policy is abolished.
We worked super hard on this and I cannot wait to see people cyclin and wheelin and scootin and joggin and enjoying their streets without fear of cars!!!
anyone who has biked in this state knows they sometimes need to take refuge on the sidewalk for their own safety. But only some are punished for it.
AB 825 by
@ib2_real
has been a labor of love for many mobility orgs & I'm proud of the final bill we are sending to the Governor!
📣 JUST IN:
AB 825, our bill by
@isaacgbryan
with many partners which legalizing biking on the sidewalk in areas without safe bicycle infrastructure just PASSED THE SENATE!
NEXT STEP: Assembly concurrence
“include equity” is redundant here. Reallocating any space from cars (avg ~$10K/yr) to transit and cycling would be an order of magnitude more equitable than our streets are now. Especially in LA where non car users are lower income compared to other cities.
LA City Council voted 13-0 to not approve
#HealthyStreetsLA
today, but push the initiative off to the March 2024 election - while the Council works on a parallel alternative Safe Streets legislation that would include equity as part of Mobility Plan implementation
“keep Culver a diverse community for all” by <checks notes> recalling our first Black mayor in 100 years because he wants more housing and bike/bus lanes??
America’s best new bike lanes of 2023 includes Santa Monica’s 17th Street protected bike lanes
#TakeTheFriendlyRoad
"As we pedal into 2024, we’re reflecting on the best bike lanes built across the country in 2023."
