Paris saw bicycle usage double in the last 4 years. This follows a decade of investments in a safe, comfortable, cycling network & the announcement of an additional 180km of cycle paths & 130,000 bike parking spaces by 2026.

If you think getting delayed a couple minutes behind a bike is bad, let me tell you about the delay a pedestrian experiences every time they want to cross a 4+ lane road
It is the quintessential American story where infrastructure is crumbling all around from lack of investment, but at least we made sure to collect $3 from a worker on their way to their minimum wage job where the owner is stealing their tips
BART is targeting the end of December as the first day of revenue service for the new fare gates at West Oakland Station.
The gates are undergoing hundreds of tests right now. While this is not the final design, we will be testing new designs, materials and features.
My
@SFMTA_Muni
38 was blocked for 30 minutes by a
@Waymo
just blinking away
Hundreds of people on the bus and waiting to get home all blocked by this one car refusing to move
More people were prevented from traveling in 30 minutes than this one car transports in a week
@resnikoff
The Oakland PD told my neighborhood at a community meeting they would not investigate a series of home burglaries with the person caught on camera and a name and address for the burglar until we voted in the DA they wanted.
Below is a map showing grade separations for CA HSR and BNSF, the freight railroad. CA HSR agreed to pay for 6 *parallel* BNSF grade seps in Shafter to resolve a lawsuit. The feds will end up paying the $202 million, but why should rail projects be liable for these things?
When 5% of transit riders skip their fare we turn transit into a prison and threaten funding
But when 48% of drivers skip their toll there is inexplicably nothing we can do about it
How about we pull Caltrains highway funding until they can reduce toll evasion to less then 5%?
I just ran into a group of riders new to BART who almost bailed after seeing these signs
I told them to wait because the next set of screens shows trains in 2 mins
@SFBART
this is a confusing UI. Either show both times on one screen, or only show the times for the next train
This F has been stuck for the past 5 minutes because this truck driver refuses to move
@SFMTA_Muni
if we are going to allow loading on Market then we need to enforce the rules
@ActNormalOrElse
If enough people had followed "The Rules" last year we would have been back to normal by now.
The rule followers want this to end sooner than the rule breakers, considering the rule breakers take actions to perpetuate the pandemic.
The idea that BART is inefficient is a complete myth. BART is the most efficient heavy rail transit system in the nation.
Operating expense/mile:
BART: $8.55
CTA: $9.31
MARTA: $12.45
MBTA: $15.02
NY MTA: $15.82
WMATA: $23.00
LA MTA: $28.73
Bay Area highway usage is at 74% of peak. Should we consider closing bridges on weekends and evenings because people are using them less?
It is just as ridiculous to close transit on weekends and evenings because people are using them less as well
Traffic in and out of LA is being significantly impacted due to the closure of a portion of the 10 Freeway in Downtown LA. We’re adding extra cars and service along the San Bernardino Line.

CA is forcing BART to waste $90M on fare gates despite BART having industry low fare evasion rates
All while Caltrain gets the same state money and remains proof of payment with no fare gates
This difference is a perfect example of how the state treats East Bay vs. Peninsula
Another large Oakland business has launched new safety measures for employees — including escorts to and from BART stations — amid rising fears of crime downtown.
Here are just a few of the eye popping heat records set across Florida, Mexico and Central America over the past week or so.
And the heat dome will only get stronger this weekend and early next week!
I spent $19.90 on Bay Area transit today
All I did was go to East Oakland for tacos and then met friends in Bernal before returning home to West Oakland
I spent $4 on AC Transit, $10.90 on BART, and $5 on MUNI
@AlHendiify
@Andrew_B_Bader
If the police have enough excess cash for this stunt then we can definitely shift some of their funding to other things we need as a society
We punish transit riders with a $125 SFMTA ticket for a Clipper malfunction on a $2.75 fare
While drivers get a $5 fine for skipping a $7 toll, which is waived if it is your first violation
Going downtown I got a ticket for supposedly failure to display proof of payment for $125. I swiped!! and even saw my clipper balance. Apparently, talking to the agent at the station it says I got on the K train at 12:30AM instead of pm today. Appeal is on the way

This type of driving is all too common
I see no sustainable solution other than to make it physically impossible for cars to drive this dangerously
Narrow roads with curbs and bollards, and speed limiters to prevent a car from going over a speed limit of 20mph on local roads
California Forever is a car-centric suburb that requires two new highways and an expansion of 80 to support all the new car travel
This plan is climate arson and must be rejected
California YIMBY is excited about the potential of the East Solano Plan, not only for new homes, but for creating a template for growth that is aligned with our values—affordability; walkability; access to jobs, transit, and amenities; and sustainability.

All mortgages have 15 day grace periods before considering a payment late, and you can delay payments for 18 months.
We should have these same allowances for rent.
The Pennsylvania Avenue Extension is the craziest project in SF. To eliminate the at-grade crossing at 16th Street and bring HSR into SF, the city is proposing a ~$2.0 bn tunnel that would take 10 years to build. The better option is to remove 280 highway
Seattle cop raced at 100mph through city streets murdering a 23 year old woman in a crosswalk without remorse
He laughed about it and said her life had limited value
This isn't "one bad apple", this was the VP of Seattle Police Officers Guild
Governor
@GavinNewsom
is defunding transit while simultaneously spending $20 billion on highways
Meanwhile
@SFBART
is very popular, and yet is still not receiving investment from the state to run more trains
Gavin Newson, fund transit, not highways!
We fought so hard to save transit service in the bay and
@SFBART
is going to waste it on egregious cop salaries
I spent hours every day flyering BART riders, and they were all concerned about service cuts!
Not a single rider worried about cop salaries
Westfield should be the HSR terminal
SF Transit Center is too far away from BART and MUNI, and is poorly designed as a bus terminal
Westfield is directly connected to all SF transit and could be connected to transbay buses via 4th and 5th
Why is
@CaHSRA
planning to have fare gates?
There should be train conductors checking fares and helping people pay like Amtrak so people can board without a barrier
@CatoInstitute
Mass transportation via cars is a failed experiment. We are now way behind advanced technology that the rest of the world has been building for 50 years.

Because after US Traffic Engineers look at the dutch design they decide it is worth killing pedestrians and cyclists just to squeeze slightly higher car throughput on these roads
@usebigears
@loridroste
Do you even hear yourself? 5000 students want to learn at one of the best universities in the world. We should do everything in our power to help them.
It would take an absolutely spectacular world class transit system for people to choose to pay $79.60 to use it instead of $13.75 to drive
The only pathway to robust transit in the bay is to reduce the cost of transit to be similar to the cost of driving
I am strongly opposed to the SF YIMBY endorsement in D4, and I do not recommend following their endorsements this year if you are pro-housing
They endorsed a NIMBY who is opposed to zoning reform, apartments in residential areas, and sheltering the homeless in their community
I want to emphasize this point. A
@SFPD
officer was watching
@Waymo
block two buses and hundreds of people for 30 mins
Officer is not permitted by law to ticket or tow Waymo for blocking the street since CPUC and DMV have granted Waymo and Cruise immunity to break traffic laws
I spoke with a
@SFPD
officer who was there watching, he said this happens all the time and they aren't supposed to tow the cars even if they are completely blocking the road and multiple buses
He did say if it was blocking a cop car they would forcibly move it
@Econ_Marshall
Exactly! We have a federally administered rent control and eviction protection program for people wealthy enough to have a down payment.
It is a means tested welfare program...in opposite direction.
There were at least 1000 bikes at Berkeley's Kidical Mass bike parade today
The parade stretched for at least a mile over two bridges!
Vote yes on Berkeley Measure FF so these kids can have a safe place to bike!
If all 222M people serviced by transit in the US paid only $37 more in taxes, then we could replace the $8.3B in fares we collect with nationwide fare-free transit
Would you pay an extra $37/yr for a nationwide transit pass to ensure we never shoot anyone again over a $3 fare?
@trmpstr
@MattPotter
I thought the whole point of auto-pilot was it was a "better* driver than humans and can avoid crashes. If it is not capable of avoiding crashes then it should not be beta tested on public roads with people who did not consent to being test subjects
We have returned to 2019 commute crush loads on
@SFBART
Trains are coming every 3 minutes, and yet I still couldn't fit in 3 trains before squeezing onboard
Please call
@GavinNewsom
to say we need more transit service not less!
Bay Area transit agencies were forced to raise fares because Newsom didn't assign federal transportation funds to transit, and bay area electeds didn't support a $1 bridge toll
This was the more regressive outcome of all the possibilities
Bay Area transit is one of the most expensive transit systems in the world, and is currently more expensive than driving
If we raise transit fares by 20% then we can consider Bay Area climate goals a bust and the 2026 transit measure as unwinnable
We need 10 car
@SFBART
trains during commute hours!
So incredibly frustrating that California is defunding transit while increasing funding for highways during a climate crisis
I spoke with a
@SFPD
officer who was there watching, he said this happens all the time and they aren't supposed to tow the cars even if they are completely blocking the road and multiple buses
He did say if it was blocking a cop car they would forcibly move it
Transit agencies in CA get much less operating support from the state than in other places.
BART gets only 5% of its operating budget from the state, while SEPTA in Philly gets 50%
CA has the resources to do the same as PA
@SFPD
I am so frustrated
I was going to be home in 20 minutes on transit: dedicated bus lanes straight to a BART whisking me home faster than anything else!
Instead a broken AVs blocked the perfect transit trip for me and hundreds of others
Since most of CAHSR construction is road construction for grade separation, is the cost increase of HSR actually due to road construction costs doubling?
The San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times have dedicated transportation reporters who have written repeatedly about the costs of high-speed rail, and fiscal problems for mass transit agencies. Neither paper has ever written an inch on the cost of highway construction.
UPDATE: The university’s dining services are preparing to host up to 1,400 law enforcement officers near People's Park, beginning Wednesday night, a source says. Activists are set to resist UC Berkeley as it prepares to build housing on the historic park.
I dare
@GavinNewsom
to invest the same amount in transit as highways for 10 years, and then we'll compare which system Californians choose after a $200B transit investment
@cayimby
California Forever is a car-centric suburb that requires multiple highway expansions to support all the new car travel
They are asking for the state to subsidize their suburb instead of housing near existing transit
This plan is climate arson. Please drop your support for it!
@scottgoblue314
@resnikoff
To be clear, they phrased it as what's the point of arresting him since the current pro-criminal DA will just release him, and so their hands are tied until the DA changes.
Which isn't even true because Alameda voted in the more pro-cop DA last election.

Slovenia is one of the most disabled-friendly countries on the planet. In 2018, the capital city of Ljubljana was named the second most accessible city in the EU.
@SFPD
AVs fail in catastrophic ways. If this was a human driven car we would have helped them push their car to the side and all been in our way
We, of course, need to eventually ban all cars, but we must specially ban AVs *before* they destroy public transit
Turns out allowing a couple people to store their cars in front of your businesses isn't nearly as good as having thousands of customers on your door step.
It’s VERY important that
#Vancouver
’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, have now become one of their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.
Right now AVs get away with dangerous behaviors, like blocking crosswalks, without any repercussions
@Waymo
will continue programming their cars to act aggressively like this unless we pass
@SenDaveCortese
's SB 915 to allow SFMTA to regulate them
Traffic calming is more effective than cameras and cheaper to install and maintain than cameras
For the cost of cameras at one intersection that reduces speeding by 20-37% you could install traffic calming at hundreds of intersections that reduces speeding by 40-56%
Big "I don't write the headlines" energy on this one — I actually think a lot of forms of ATE absolutely make cities safer — but some of the things I learned while reporting this surprised me and I think have major implications for policy. quick 🧵.
We have a fully-approved shovel-ready HSR project from SF to LA!!!
Now we just have to decide how fast we want to complete it. 5 years? 10 years? 50 years?
Today was the end of CA Forever
A car centric suburb requiring massive subsidies for two highway expansions would have been a climate disaster, and there is no way they win a vote after the EIR is released
If
@GavinNewsom
defunds transit and we lose weekend and evening service then it would be devastating for restaurant workers
Call the governor this weekend at (916) 445-2841 and tell him we need BART!
The neighbors are absolutely pissed at
@Waymo
Multiple times a day the robot cars get fully stuck at this turn and completely block the road. The city is not allowed to do anything to fix it 😡
We must pass
@SenDaveCortese
's SB915 so cities can regulate AVs appropriately
We must fund transit like we do highways
We don't tie funding for Caltrans to them jailing a quota of people who didn't pay for their parking spots, and more people skip their parking fare than transit fare
Just fund transit. Full stop.
We were on the verge of massive transit service cuts. We worked hard all year to put together lifeline funds & we’ve now shored up service until 2026.
In 2026, we need to go to Bay Area voters with a long-term funding & reform measure.
I’m deeply committed to that work.
If car companies actually cared about safety they would first deploy AV tech in human driven cars to block going faster than the speed limit, force a full stop at a stop sign, and prevent parking in bike lanes
This could be the Capital Corridor, San Joaquins, and the Pacific Surfliner if Caltrans didn't spend all of California's transportation funds on highway expansions
During the 5 minutes it took me to ride the Great Walkway I counted a little over 250 people enjoying this gorgeous evening.
If they were all in cars driving at a normal following distance they would stretch over 4mi, longer than the roadway itself even if they used both lanes.
BART has seen HUGE growth in Clipper START ridership since increasing the discount from 20% to 50% for low-income riders.
Please spread the word about Clipper START, which can be used on all Bay Area transit agencies. Sign up here:
This is devastating. We are letting bay area transit fail because of a toll that is less than BART fare when we already ask transit riders to subsidize drivers to the tune of billions a year
I introduced SB 532 — temporary bridge toll increase — to avoid devastating transit service cuts.
Today I’m joined by
@AsmLoriDWilson
in announcing a pause on SB 532 to allow further dialogue among Bay Area legislators & stakeholders about how to save Bay Area transit systems.🧵
Chevron is the top polluter in Richmond and top emitter of GHG on the west coast
Bay Area Council has a Chevron lobbyist on their board and their top lobbying efforts have been to dismantle bike lanes and veto transit funding
The bay area will be better without Chevron
Our statement on Chevron leaving California. Our elected leaders must take stock of the decisions they're making that are driving away employers, jobs and investment.
@Scott_Wiener
CA should take ownership over all companies that it bails out this way, and convert them to worker cooperatives
It would be bad business to bailout billionaires yet again and let them continue to drive companies into failure
Meanwhile in Hoboken no one has been killed by a car in 7 years since they lowered speed limits to 20 mph, added protected bike lanes, improved crosswalks, extended curbs, etc.
