This is a compelling argument, but I suspect a counterfactual that falls within the distribution along other dimensions could be recognized as a novelty. Basically the novelty (or error) mostly fits its knowledge except for a few outlier characteristics.
To an LLM, a novel discovery is indistinguishable from an error.
