It is a truly monumental day for
@regentcraft
– I’m ecstatic to announce our $60M Series A!
From our earliest days, we were told this round may be the hardest money we ever raise. I wont go as far to say its “easy” to build a sub-scale, proof-of-concept demonstrator, but many
I’m excited to announce that REGENT has taken flight! 🛫
We combined the benefits from ground effect flight, distributed electric propulsion, and hydrofoiling into a single platform: the seaglider
Which will massively improve convenience & affordability of regional travel
🧵👇
Seagliders are the future of coastal transportation.
By the end of 2025, the 1st passengers will be hydrofoiling through harbors & flying over the open seas on a cushion of air
At a fraction of the cost of a plane ticket today.
With zero emissions.
Today, we proved it works.
1/9 Regional transportation needs to be re-thought from the ground-up
However, we see existing efforts – eVTOLs and electric aircraft – facing massive technical and regulatory hurdles. Here’s our master plan at REGENT to unlock the future of travel
Huge news! A $60M Series A for
@regentcraft
and a partnership with Japan Airlines (
@JAL_Official_jp
) to advance seagliders in Japan.

For the first time, a seaglider has taken flight.
🛡️ Safe in harbors
🌊 Comfortable in waves
😌 Convenient for regional travel
All due to the ability to combine floating, foiling, and flying.
Why is this so revolutionary? 👇
What an epic year!! Major contracts, key technical proof-points, all keeping REGENT on-track to commercial entry to service.
Here's what we did in 2022 🧵👇
🇯🇵🇯🇵 JAPAN AIRLINES x REGENT 🇯🇵🇯🇵
Big news here:
@JAL_Official_jp
has just completed a strategic investment in
@REGENTcraft
.
This kicks off our formal partnership on
#seaglider
development and potential future implementation into the JAL global network
Previous mechanical methods of distributing propulsion involved many engines or complex gearboxes. Either way they were heavy, expensive, maintenance intensive.
The maturation of electric propulsion lets us unlock the blown wing by lowering weight, cost, complexity (+emissions!)
Thanks for the buzz
@CNN
! The most exciting thing about the press we’ve gotten so far is that everyone seems to really *get* what we’re doing. The need for a better mode of regional transportation is universal.

Boston-based REGENT says it's planning to build the first all-electric "seaglider," a ground-effect vehicle with top speeds of 180 mph. The company hopes it will change the future of transportation over water.
Regional travel has not changed since the 1950s. That is bonkers.
Seagliders will drastically reduce both the cost and time of regional trips:
- LA ➡️ SF or BOS ➡️ NYC in 2:15 hr for $100
- MIA ➡️ Bahamas in 1:20 hr for $63
Hawaii, New Zealand, Japan interislands.
And more.
A wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) craft is a superior option for electric vehicles.
You get:
✅ Higher efficiency (flying on a cushion of air)
✅ Lower fuel reserves required (always above safe landing)
But WIGs have had their issues getting off the ground, er, water.
Here's why
There is something magical about ground effect.
It's no surprise mother nature takes advantage of this aerodynamic hack for flight efficiency and lift augmentation.
How does it work? 👇
REGENT builds seagliders – the first ever wave-tolerant WIG.
Adding a hydrofoil allows effortless travel through harbors and waves
✅ More comfortable for passengers
✅ More maneuverable and safe
✅ More efficient with zero emissions
It's not trivial, here's the tech problem:
This time last year, Mike & I were feverishly preparing for YC Demo Day
Today we have:
✅ $27M from amazing investors like
@peterthiel
@Justin_Mateen
@foundersfund
@tonsing
@mcuban
✅ 22 world-class employees
✅ $4.6B in orders
One step closer to revolutionizing transportation
To take off and land at low speeds, seagliders feature a "blown wing".
The propellers blow directly over the wing so the wing sees fast moving air - generating high lift - EVEN WHILE the vehicle is moving slowly.
This has only become possible recently. Why?

Let's stop for a second to recap where we're at.
Wave-tolerance of hydrofoils + Low-speed takeoff of blown wing = Vehicle with convenience of a ferry (no long airport lines) with the speed of an aircraft.

World: Meet seaglider
Stoked to see all the positive feedback on our vehicle. It means the world is craving this technology!
REGENT is building regional transportation that is more
⏱convenient
🧘♀️comfortable
💵affordable
🔋sustainable
And we proved the tech works ✅
This Boston-based startup completed a test flight of its all-electric seaglider. “Many of the painful regional routes that people are trying to do with airplanes, cars, helicopters, and trains sometimes will be accessible by seagliders.”
WIGs (+seaplanes) require high speeds to take off. This does not work well if there are waves...
At best, takeoff & landing are uncomfortable.
At worst, you cannot take off at all.
Who would base their travel on a vehicle that has a 50% chance of working?
REGENT solved this.
12 passengers on our 1st vehicle.
Seagliders have maritime captains, not aircraft pilots.
All the airplane stuff - roll, pitch, altitude control, stabilization in wind gusts - is controlled by our automated digital fight control system.
Captain just does left-right, fast-slow!
Hydrofoils have a limited top speed.
If you go too fast, air bubbles form. Since air is ~1000x less dense than water, bubbles kill lift.
To rise up on foils at 20 mph (32 kph) for a comfortable ride, it de facto sets the top speed ~50 mph (80 kph).
Flying that slow is hard!
1/9 When Mike & I founded

Of course, the first place we looked was Hawaii.

We’re going back to our roots – reviving maritime transportation. Removing the overhead and angst of airports on regional trips.
2/9 First, new aircraft cost billions of dollars to develop/certify and a decade of work with the FAA. Despite the FAA’s best efforts to support innovation, a new airframer has to get in line behind 100 other electric aircraft manufacturers for the FAA’s limited resources.

One of the coolest parts of this video to me is the fact that we stitched multiple flights together to make it.
We flew again, & again, & again.
We're putting the seaglider prototype through its paces to validate our engineering models.
All to drive full-scale product safety.
A Boston-based startup has completed a test flight of its all-electric seaglider -- a mix of boat and plane that it hopes will be a travel solution between coasts and islands.
7/9 When we consider new prototype cells in development, or even hydrogen propulsion – we increase our range to 500 miles. Now we service airline routes, connecting LA to SF, Boston to NYC, Hong Kong to Taipei, Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. The list goes on…
The reason it works?
Some home-town coverage of a strong New England

It is obviously a big technical challenge to make high-speed, low-altitude flight possible - and safe.
This is exactly what the team at
@regentcraft
is working so hard on every day.
Funny, nature makes it look so easy... 🤩
3/9 Then, when it comes time for flight test, an airframer must coordinate with a dozen different government acronym organizations to get experimental flight testing approved over populated areas. And rightfully so – safety is paramount!
