What did you get up to this weekend? 🤯
For every Muslim, black or brown person you know, it was hell. Here's some key steps you can take as allies and professionals that can help. 🧵
❤️ LOVE MATTERS. The silver lining has been seeing neighbours and friends get in front of these mobs, or helping clean up after the destruction. That's what we are fighting for.
🫂 EMPATHY MATTERS. Check in with Muslim colleagues. They're not fine. They may not have fully processed there are mobs on the streets of their home attacking anyone who looks like them. Provide safe space, empathy and understanding if they're distracted and accommodate any flex
🎓 MINDSET MATTERS. This isn't a nuanced debate that requires equal airing of all sides. These mobs are attacking our version of democracy and society. These aren't protesters pushing for a change in government policy. They are attacking marginalised parts of your community.
📢 VOICES MATTER. Amplify Muslim and Anti- Racist voices. Find someone you resonate with. Share their stories and connect with them. It humanises us and allows authentic voices airspace. This is a strong antidote to the disinformation strategy that triggered these attacks.
📰 MEDIA MATTERS. For many of us, this is shocking but not unsurprising. This is the culmination of decades of dog-whistle politics and media bosses pandering to the worst instincts in society. Marginalised and demonised, it is hard for Muslims to break free from this narrative.
Walthamstow is my home and has been home to five generations of my British Muslim Immigrant Family.
This is how we stand up for real British values. 🇬🇧
Together. Peaceful. Community
Street by street, conversation by conversation we will break this attack on our society.
"If those rules were broken, then there will be disciplinary action for all those involved."
Boris Johnson said on 8 Dec that he'd been "repeatedly assured" that "no Covid rules were broken"
No 10 confirmed on Monday that the PM had been fined by the Met Police over the events
Honoured to be appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Affairs. At a time when Britain is recasting itself on the world stage, I look forward to setting out Labour’s vision for a values-led foreign policy based on cooperation & internationalism
Incredibly proud to have nominated
@stellacreasy
to the local returning officer for Parliamentary Candidate for Walthamstow CLP. I've known Stella for a decade. I've not met a more committed and capable campaigner dedicated to the people of Walthamstow.
I'm elated to announce the birth of our second child and beautiful daughter Aida (عَائِدَة) Leena (لِينَةٌ). Khadija was an absolute hero and is doing well. I am in awe and grateful for the noble NHS staff at
@MaternityWX
who sacrifice so much so that we can all be blessed.
I'm so proud of the campaign we ran. I'm sorry we weren't successful.
The campaign for breaking barriers remain. The campaign for taking on the cost of living crisis continues. The campaign for bringing security & hope endures. The best of luck to
@cwg_labour
and
@faizashaheen
We did it! Thanks to a private contribution of $3800 the Harry's Last Stand Refugee Tour reached it's target number and come early in the new year I'll be off to the refugee hotspots of the world. Thanks all who helped in each and every way. Cheers, Harry

I was elected Vice Chair of the Walthamstow Labour Party this week. I'll be serving with
@mrsamjtalbot
as Chair.
@stowlabour
is my home, I care passionately about the
@WFLabourParty
, and over the years fellow local members haven't just become friends, they've become family. 🌹🌹
10,000 new people voted Labour over the two elections I was our candidate in.
Today, I'm asking for your vote so together we can win Chingford and Woodford Green for Labour.
It's emotional seeing my name as the title of Michael Rosen's book 'Bilal's Brilliant Bee.' Only till I saw my name did I realise how subconsciously absent I felt from my own world growing up. Glad I came across this empowering moment during South Asian Heritage Month
#FreeToBeMe
I spent the morning helping out Lloyd and the great
@redbridgelabour
team led by
@Jas_Athwal
and
@wesstreeting
in Churchfields in Woodford. Then I played 'where's Bilal?' in the photo. See if you can spot me and Aida? 👀👀 Hint: I'm more visible than local conservatives.
I am disgusted that
@England
players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media.
It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable.
I can have it all! He says with baby puke on his shoulder, forgot his car keys, and is running an hour behind. Regardless, great to help Labour Valley Ward colleagues in the local election campaign in Waltham Forest
@WFLabourParty
@ElizabethBapti4
@kentishscribble
I'm excited to announce that I've been selected on the
@UKLabour
Future Candidates Programme.
Campaigning in Chingford was the privilege of a lifetime and I want to know how to better serve our voters next time.
I'm also looking forward to meeting a diverse cohort of FCP'ers!
I'm honestly quite moved. Three generations of my family have shopped on Walthamstow High Street weekly since the 60's. It's central to my community and my past. Seeing
@Keir_Starmer
and
@RachelReevesMP
speaking to local businesses about a Labour plan. It gives me hope.
The Conservatives are distracted by infighting and scandal while families across the country struggle with the cost-of-living crisis.
Labour’s contract with the British people will build a new Britain which guarantees security, prosperity and respect for all.
While Rishi was being out of touch while the cost of living crisis spirals out of control,
@WFLabourParty
was out in Valley Ward Chingford making the case for local Labour government. We cannot afford the Tories anymore.
@DavidLammy
Sign me up! We're pretty busy in the day being both fully employed while working from home AND looking after children AND reaching out to vulnerable members of our wider circle because the Govt don't seem to be able to do three things at once. So after 8pm is better for us.
Thanks to
@MayorofLondon
for inviting me to his inclusive Christmas Carol Service, where we celebrate the best of my home, London. As much as I love
@SadiqKhan
I had to first to catch with the heroine of the hour, Labour's newest MP
@abenaopp

Worried about your eyesight? drive a car for 30 miles.

How dare you question my advice?!?

@BorisJohnson
I’m on the shortlist! 🌹
I’m excited for the race ahead, and thankful for all of the support we’ve built locally across Chingford and Woodford Green.

Here's a first. I had the pleasure of canvassing the iconic

Estate for the excellent
@RNBlake
. Great conversations in a key marginal for
#ge2024
5 yrs ago today, I rolled up my sleeves and represented the party I loved in my hometown. It was a hard task. But thanks to Chingford & Woodford Green's stalwart and dedicated members, and community based campaigns, we put us on track to make the seat winnable.
#GE2015
I wanted a
#labourselfie
with the creator of the hashtag herself
@Uma_Kumaran
but she's busy doing her best to win every vote in Stratford. So I will settle of a picture of her.
Delighted to have been re-elected as Vice Chair of
@labourinthecity
. I'm excited to be working with a new Exec, increased membership to build a diverse set of events during a time where Financial Services need to be serving society the most!
Victory for Labour in Chingford & Woodford Green depends on the hard work of Councillors like Liz in marginal wards like Valley.
I'm honoured to have her support.
Wes and I ran as neighbouring parliamentary candidates in 2015 and 2017. I can say hand in heart he never stops pushing for Labour values or his community. Exactly the drive and compassion we need in our future Health Secretary. Huge congratulations
@wesstreeting
Delighted to have been appointed as Shadow Health & Social Care Secretary.
This year the NHS saved my life and staff across health and social care are getting us through the worst pandemic in living memory.
Labour created the NHS. We’ll make it fit for the future.
@jfreewright
It's a remarkable accomplishment that Trump has made so many missteps and disasters that he manages to make the whole going to North Korea, walking off and making things worse, one of the less memorable points of his presidency.
Broad, challenging but hopeful conversations on how we can work with Investors and Financiers to encourage human rights around the world. Ethics and profits can, should and must go hand in hand for Labour. Great to be on a panel
#LabourConference21
Waltham Forest Labour held a snazzy fundraiser last night, with speeches from John Cryer MP, Feryal Clark MP
Sem Moema AM gave an amazing speech reminding me what the Party could and should do if elected. I'll help her and
@SadiqKhan
in the May elections. Hopefully you will too
Always a pleasure to return to where it all started in
#highamspark
supporting
@DoreRosalind
and
@WFLabourParty
. Don't forget to use both votes for Labour!
Teams are out several times a day until election day on May 5. You get bonus points if you spot us out twice.
I believe in
@UKLabour
because it's the party of respect and placing value on hard work. It's about the vision rather than applause. That's why I'm standing in the Tory stronghold of Larkswood in Chingford for
@WFLabourParty
. If you're local, get in touch.
Home Sect, I think you mean '
@wflabour
council and local police force successes (despite your deep cuts to both services) in targeted investment towards extremely vulnerable young people who have been failed, demonised and marginalised by a decade of Tory austerity'
Great to visit Chingford Police Station yesterday with
@MPIainDS
.
Met more new police officers and discussed the Borough’s recent success in tackling county lines and taking gang members off our streets.
#JoinThePolice
My neighbour lost his TFL-working brother. My gran has had to live in a single room and has suffered mental health problems. We all sacrificed. Dominic Cummings doesn't have these problems, doesn't care, and is protected by some national news reporters. I'm fuming. He's a bastard
We made a deal. I won't tell her mum about the extra bottle of milk if she coos when I say the word "Labour" on the doorstep here in Larkswood, Chingford.
I am so proud to have the support of
@GMB_union
to be Chingford and Woodford Green’s next Labour candidate. 🧡
In our workplaces and Westminster, I’m proud to stand with them as we take on the Tories’ cost of living crisis and fight for a better Britain.
What's been uplifting has been seeing British Muslims in the national arena (regardless of political persuasion) stepping up, standing up and calling out. Really been thankful of all them these past few days
@adilray
@SayeedaWarsi
@SadiqKhan
@HumzaYousaf
to name a few
Thank you for asking Robert the important questions.
And like always there are two Robert’s - the one that dog whistles and the one that then tries to pretend to reign it in because the dog whistle worked 🤷🏽♀️
A legitimate debate on immigration can be had without painting over
I'm very sad to hear of the passing of
@CRobbinsLBWF
. He lived and breathed our local borough. He was a committed Leader of the Council and was a good friend. He had such a wonderful no-nonsense style that I truly admired. My thoughts are with his family and ours
@WFLabourParty
Out in Highams Park today leafletting with their great candidate
@DoreRosalind
. This was the first time Aida was awake *and* looking at the camera 🤯. Next thing you know she'll be running the board.
When we volunteered in
#leros
the greek camp for
#refugees
we saw first the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding. Glad that
@Harryslaststand
brings hope for so many.
I'm genuinely excited about
@UKLabour
leadership election. On the whole, there's a broad range of capable candidates and I feel torn (in a good way). It gives us a chance to really shape the party. If you want to have that feeling too, follow

While fighting him for two consecutive elections, I met with so many people forever damaged by his policies. But simply hating him or the idea of his knighthood won't be enough. He keeps winning. We must listen, learn and convince his constituents for a better way.
Feel sick about IDS being rewarded with a knighthood for decades of utter cruelty and incompetence.
IDS is the father of policies that have caused untold pain and suffering to people with disabilities. It’s a disgrace that he’ll be a knight and that he’s still an MP.
@sarahwollaston
@MailOnline
Spot on. Decades of dog whistles and pandering and fear mongering. This is our chance to take a stand but some editors looking for clicks need to be far more responsible and take account of what they've been writing.
Winning Chingford & Woodford Green for Labour is going to be a team effort, and so I’m delighted to have Grace’s support for our campaign.
We'll only elect our community's first ever Labour MP by working together.
Join our campaign 👉🏽
I am proud to have so much wide support from all across our movement to be Labour’s next candidate in Chingford and Woodford Green!
Sign up and join my campaign because we will win this together.
Thank you! 🌹

There are 2850 young people in Chingford and Highams Park eligible for Free School Meals. This half term, they won't get that food. We can't let that happen. Here's how by working with
@EatOrHeat
and Highams Park Food Aid we can as a community ensure they are fed this half term.
This is Labour Party offices *after* we filled a van of donations for those displaced from Ukraine. Amazing work from local communities in
#Chingford
/ Highams Park. Ready to roll again later this week for medicines and hygiene products. Also, cardboard boxes, lots of them. Dm me
Thank you John - Chingford and Woodford Green is where I grew up, and I'm looking forward to putting that experience to good use for Labour at the next general election.
Delighted to have the support of our London Assembly Member
@Semakaleng
.
As Sem says, we're going to win Chingford and Woodford Green by working with the whole London Labour family.
My dad taught me to play cricket in
#Chingford
when Tebbit was playing these dog whistle politics. It's what spurred me to stand as Parliamentary candidate. Organise, campaign and
#changechingford
for the better with
@WFLabourParty
@cwg_labour
Disappointing to be asked today in Waltham Forest by some Tory activists “if I was British" and "who I support in the World Cup". Not the London so many of us know and love.

Privileged to hear

New Year's speech calling time on Britain's sticking-plaster politics. A new year, and a focus on Labour in Government with a mission
BREAKING:
Liz Truss has appointed Dominic Johnson, Tory donor & co-founder of Somerset Capital with Rees-Mogg, as trade minister
Announcement quietly dropped on
He's being handed a peerage to boot
Confirms
@fletcherr
scoop
This is another pic of me and
@cwg_labour
friends canvassing out in Chingford for
@WFLabourParty
. And I'm oddly *very* excited about it.
It's important to put these pix in context, otherwise it's just random people taking photos on street corners.
