@JohnBlaxland1 Nonsense. Term "entanglements" exemplifies subjectivity of ideological/ahistoric mindset. Canada & Australia are mature democracies. They choose to participate in collective-defence & collective-security arrangements. Esp when helping resist aggressive authoritarian powers.

@Butterscribe If the best you can do is not understand an explanation in plain English (as to how you have misunderstood an issue), you are surely one lacking credibility (& courtesy)?

@Butterscribe The ADA is a longtime & big supporter of the 1951 Refugee Convention. As is Australia - an original signatory - with an impressive record for permanently resettling refugees. Esp since WW2. Conv's biggest obstacle is all the countries who won't sign it. Or are pseudo-signatories.

@Butterscribe You appear to miss the qualifier that this measure's success was because it tackled bogus asylum claims, not applications by actual refugees. The Refugee Convention is tragically undermined by bogus asylum-seekers gaming it to evade immigration laws.

@mbird12 Whether you're correct or not, most Gaza "debate" ignores basic realities. Gaza (non-Israeli territory) is ruled by a terrorist org pledged to destroy Israel. No peace/2nd state poss until Gaza has accountable govt. But no external entity (eg. UN) able & willing to achieve this.

@757GamecockGirl @cspan @SecDef You can't appreciate, strengthen & protect diversity, & many other things, without unity of both purpose & entity. With national unity, or the cohesion of a democracy's defence force, this means sharing sufficient key citizenship values & responsibilities, no matter the diversity

@Butterscribe Your apparent unfamiliarity with the concept & practicality of non-partisanship, & of independence, are showing. We're also well used to the immediate resort to abuse (instead of debate) by those towards & on the extremes of the ideological spectrum.

@Butterscribe Far from identifying a single editor", our point is that no-one seems to have been held accountable. Whether similar professional lapses happen elsewhere or not (& they do) is not relevant. All such incidents are disgraceful.

But for pre-1964 international law when Cocos Islands (1955), & Christmas Island (1958) were transferred fm UK sovereignty. And for subsequent ability to hold & win 2 self-determination referendums. Australia wld be facing same strategic-security problem now facing UK re Chagos.

The Times view on the Chagos Islands deal: Sir Keir Starmer and Lord Hermer appear to have completely lost their senses in this mad dash to hand over strategically vital British territory. They should lie down in a cold, dark room and think again.
